- Before he was sent to the prison for life, Tyler Dazey's sister Kylie Frey spoke at sentencing and talked about how she remembered her brother before and after he killed their mother, Jennifer Dazey, and her dog, Echo. Tyler started laughing and went off on his sister calling her names and telling her to read the bible. "I can live forever, I have God," Tyler told his sister.

Tyler Dazey was charged with first-degree murder after his mother was found murdered and beaten inside her Iowa home. When police discovered Jennifer Dazey dead, she had brutal injuries to her head, neck, and face. Tyler Dazey allegedly told police that his mother was practicing witchcraft before murdering Jennifer and the family dog. The 28-year-old was deemed competent for trial after a series of evaluations.

Victim impact statement. It happens at the end of trials… very common thing and it is the victim’s right to do so, if they so wish. No, he is not allowed to speak or interrupt. I’m unsure as to why the judge allowed this.

I knew this man while at a Residential Care Facility back in 2019-2020. Back then he was just the same as everyone else there, troubled but seeking the help they need. I dont know what went wrong between then and now. Maybe he refused help and the medication that helped him stay more "normal" but in the end I dont know. Sad to see it go this far.

“DUBUQUE, Iowa (KWWL) -- Tyler Dazey, the Dubuque man convicted in July of first-degree murder of his mother and animal cruelty of their family dog, has been sentenced to serve life in prison.
In January 2024, Jennifer Dazey and her dog were found dead inside her home. Her son, who lived with her, was found [unclothed] inside the home and did not communicate with first responders.
Dazey used a hatchet to murder his mother in her bed and the dog in the living room.
A friend of Jennifer Dazey, Kristy Follman, was the first witness to take the stand during the trial. Follman recounted entering the home that morning and barricading herself in a room until police arrived after witnessing the scene.
Follman detailed the emotional moment that police arrived at the home.
She testified, "I heard the officer getting closer to me. I did open the door and as I seen the officer coming around the corner I hightail booked it out of there and ran into the officer and told him, 'Don't leave me, don't leave me.'"
During the trial the prosecution asserted that Dazey was mentally unbalanced at the time of the murder. They cited Dazey's explanation to officials that his mother practiced "witchcraft" as reasoning for committing the crime.
The two counts will run consecutively, with the animal cruelty conviction carrying a sentence of two years and a fine of $850.
Dazey will not be eligible for parole as he serves out his life sentence. He is also ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution to the estate.”

This is just heartbreaking. You could see it in his families faces. I pray for the 3 women that went up to find some closure being able to tell the rotten monster they are no longer part of his life. They were brave.

The victims' advocate who read the two seems like an amazing advocate. I have seen victims' advocates just read the words on the paper & it feels very unemotional & monotone.
This advocate made eye contact with the defendant as she read these letters & it felt like she read them the way the victims intended. The victims weren't here to speak, but I felt THEIR emotion through her voice.

At least they allowed them to say all this, the judge edited all the victims impact statements in the Jennifer Paxton case, they weren’t even as harsh as I’ve seen, I thought it was really messed up and the judge should have let them say what they wanted.

@sheisnormalLinda the court usually cares, and you should if you're ever in court for any reason. The court isn't just a room with some stuffy guy in a robe. It's a representation of the rule of law in society - dressing respectfully is showing you respect the law and you respect the society you are a part of.
You don't have to wear expensive suits and dresses, but clean, full coverage clothing without logos or fashionable cutouts is considered appropriate.
This judge is weak, though. He allows the defendant to trample all over the victim impact statements, so it's no surprise he doesn't care about decorum. Serious judges will send people home for wearing inappropriate clothing.

Some courts have suggestions how to dress and yes, some have actual dress codes. If you wear certain items you will not be permitted to enter the court.
