Bill and Alan "perform" skipping on The B(loody) A(wful) Robertson show. By the way, I believe that "Outernational" and "Wild and Lonely" are being re-released on August 7th.
Art house, avant garde, diva & humour rolled into 16 octaves. Why are the Associates largely forgotten? Billy Mackenzie had one of the finest voices in british music
One of the most original albums of the 80's. I used to listen to it all the time, although Associates weren't very famous in Italy. Their music still sends shivers down my spine. Definitely one of the most underrated bands of the 80's. R.I.P. Billy MacKenzie.
Without question one of the best songwriting partnerships these isles have produced. I’ve heard their influence everywhere, Johnny Marr to A Ha. Supremely talented, tragic, glorious, beautiful. Gone.
Wow. Loved them in early 80s. So unique and special. Still adore them both today. Timeless tunes. So sad Bill and Alan are no longer with us but they will be remembered long after will are all gone xxx
This is still my favourite song of all time. I can't get over it, sublime, stimulating, the lyrics fit perfectly with the music, and that voice...it makes me melt. One of my few regrets in life was never seeing this man in life.
They had everything, the melodies, the voice, the songs. Bloody hell, there's no one who still comes close. They were a divine intervention lighting the skies for a brief moment in time.
Breathtaking.... tearjacking.. Billy was the BEST singer of his generation: PERIOD.. the Associates were so ahead it is still surprising they achieved so much in uch a short span of time... Alan whererever you are God Bless you.. Billy is always be in our heart
the Associates were absolutely incredible and sorely under recognised. It's a sad fact that they would not appeal to mass audiences as mainstream music does.
seemed like only yesterday when I saw this on TV and became an instant Associates fan-- and still am. Still remembered the day when I read that Billy died; oh so clearly still....
I remember seeing the Associates at the Moonlight Club in west Hampstead very early in 1982 (i think,..) just before Sulk was released ; we were right at the front jumpihg around like crazy & they were just stunning. We went to a house party afterwards with them in west Hampstead .. but thats another story ;) Cant believe its almost 30 years ago.
God, thanks So much for this. This is where I first saw the Boys ( don't ask me why I was watching this stupid show). Brought a tear to my eye.......if you don't know the band check them out........brilliant!!!
Funny how this song never eaves your concience. It seems so simple but there is majic involved. All these years later I'm still in love with this song.
@HeathenLoveGod And Alan Rankine. I Bought Sulk close to its release date in 82 (I was 13 yrs old). It took me to a uniquely strange and at times somewhat unsettling place. Its an LP I never tire of and even now, it still occasionally surprises me. Its truly a shame that these 2 weren't truly able to overcome their (musical?) differences, although I believe they had started working together again, not long before Billy's death. Good as they were solo, it was together that they excelled.
Billy 'n Alan...Pure Geniuses...Fuck!!!! Still ahead of their time...My greatest regret is that I went out with a wiman while my friends went to Grangemouth/Falkirk to watch the Associates live! Apparently they were amazin'
Never heard or seen The Associates before and got the album Sulk because I loved the cover. I was an art student back then :) The music in it were is great and still is. What is with the host and his hideous sweater. Is he coked up or what?
That was Alan Rankine, the under-recognised genius of the Associates, although I love the mercurial Billy too. So sad they are both gone. All of their albums are other-worldly and riveting.
makes me super proud to be Scottish...what a handsome looking guy above all his voice? Think that's why they were not as successful as could have been cause pop industry not used to a voice like Billy's.Feel so so sad he is gone and ofcourse so many tragic deaths amongst the Mackenzie family, just painful.godbless you.
+lene k Sulk has to be the most original album released during 1982. I can't think of any others that come close. Tin Drum by Japan is my favourite album of all time but that was released in 1981 although it sold more during 1982.
Andy it was an ex boyfriend who made me aware of Billy, the associates...i mind my sister n me watching TOTP i was 8 she was 12 and we always remembered this amazing singer, bits of party fears two and this kinda morten Haket from AHA kinda look alike (sorry mispelt his name lol )but like 20 years later when my ex played party fears two in a pub juke box?it came back to me and aye,i loved outernational Andy-sad with a voice like his?he never got the top billing he deserved. Thanks for your replies guys :)

Reminder of Reilly ace spies same time 1982

I love this track. Utter genius.
One of the most beautiful songs of all time. A timeless classic from a musical God
Without question one of the best songwriting partnerships these isles have produced. I’ve heard their influence everywhere, Johnny Marr to A Ha. Supremely talented, tragic, glorious, beautiful. Gone.
What a composition. What a voice. Immortality granted.
I loved Sulk. What an album, what a talent ,what a band......
Such a shame you are not here any more.
As much as much I adore Billy I think Alan was an awesome songwriter. They were the 80s John and Paul.
Wow. Loved them in early 80s. So unique and special. Still adore them both today. Timeless tunes. So sad Bill and Alan are no longer with us but they will be remembered long after will are all gone xxx

I think I have to agree, but in terms of the song and not getting to see the great man. Perhaps in the next life??
This song has always given me goose bumps. His voice is so brilliant. What a waste of a wonderful talent.
This song is pure class.
SULK is a masterpiece of an album, this is one of my favourite tracks off of it...
They had everything, the melodies, the voice, the songs. Bloody hell, there's no one who still comes close. They were a divine intervention lighting the skies for a brief moment in time.

Pure pop perfection, sadly missed!
the Associates were absolutely incredible and sorely under recognised. It's a sad fact that they would not appeal to mass audiences as mainstream music does.
They might not do now but they did back then. Sulk was a top ten album and Party Fears Two a top ten hit single!
Two complete individuals and brilliant musicians
seemed like only yesterday when I saw this on TV and became an instant Associates fan-- and still am. Still remembered the day when I read that Billy died; oh so clearly still....
Love this song so much and God rest Billy's soul. A much missed star 🌟 with the most amazing voice

His voice is unreal
RIP ALAN RANKINE
God, thanks So much for this. This is where I first saw the Boys ( don't ask me why I was watching this stupid show). Brought a tear to my eye.......if you don't know the band check them out........brilliant!!!
just reminded how brilliant this was. saw this when it first aired. thanks for posting.
Damn good track.
So damn unusual... punchy, great lyrics, great drumming.
The singer died far too young.
Thankyou for posting this. Was lucky enough to see them support the Cure in 1979 - what a band and what a great pair of lads, Billy is sorely missed.
GREENTAMBOURINE lucky sod

amazing voice and sound !
They had a great article on Billy in FHM, when it was a good mag. Colourful clothes, and the whippets.
Billy...how beautiful were you .......

Billy loved dressing up as a pilot
You were the love of my life, Billy, but I was born too late.........
I'm on it. today hopefully
Billy, Alan and Tommy Docherty on the same chat show. Surely the equivalent of adding potassium to water.
I do agree :o)
How handsome was Billy in that uniform? ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Never heard or seen The Associates before and got the album Sulk because I loved the cover. I was an art student back then :) The music in it were is great and still is.
What is with the host and his hideous sweater. Is he coked up or what?
This is how people in Britain and US dressed like in the 80s. Watch the Cosby show.
Groovy
I've always hated the way BA Robertson introduced this absolute classic... But the Associates were fabulous 😁👍👍
Oh. I do.
Who was the guitarist...?
That was Alan Rankine, the under-recognised genius of the Associates, although I love the mercurial Billy too. So sad they are both gone. All of their albums are other-worldly and riveting.
What s/he said.
……. I'm inconsolable .……
Sort your chewy out,Billy,lad.
BA Robertson is a big cringe. Billy and Alan were absolutely incredible, this song is the work of genius!
fantastic voice, such a waste !!
makes me super proud to be Scottish...what a handsome looking guy above all his voice? +lene k Scottish post-punk scene was pretty awesome tbf.
