Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah was commissioned in 1844 by the Birmingham Festival, and translates the great Anglo-German oratorio and Passion tradition of Mendelssohn’s predecessors Handel and Bach into the warm sweep of Anglo-German Romanticism.
