It wouldn't have, he might of done a bit better but the profile on that thing is so goofy and the arms so fragile, it wouldn't of mattered. A bad combat ship is just a bad combat ship.
As someone who regularly flies the Syulen, its best defense is its thrust and speed. If you use it as a guerilla fighter it's super annoying for other players, and it holds super well. You don't want to stick around to let them hit you.
Did you two have a no missiles rule? Are you using the same/similar control devices because it looked like the Syulen is a KB player, and the maneuvers your were pulling definitely appeared to be anything but.
I'll add a two main things from the pilot perspective. That frontal profile is a serious issue, you cannot win any trades at range. It gets a little better after you lose the big thrusters but your acceleration gets lowered so despite becoming smaller, you also move less out of the way. The other main issue is the already low pitch/yaw gets extremely hard to fight as soon as you lose a thruster due to torque imbalance pushing your nose around as you try to move. Due to the latter issue, whenever I would lose a main thruster I would try to encourage the other ones to get shot off to balance the thrust output, which actually worked great. But losing engines means lost acceleration, so I would never be able to reasonably push into range and gain control of the fight without being punished. Good Fights AV1, enjoyed having the legs pulled off my starfish!
Best to outfit it for maximum PVE efficiency (possibly cannons) because its guns exist purely for running those bounty missions to grind up enough credits for a more appropriate ship to PVP in.
this is interesting though... I love flying my Syulen. It has become a daily driver. I've changed the loadout and have gimbal'd S2 repeaters, and upgraded all other components to military spec. Bear in mind, I'm a relatively new player (6 months or so), and I've just yesterday gotten my firs HRT. I didn't win, but I came pretty close to completing the HRT. Thanks for your video.
I actually think the real phenomenon we're seeing here is the newer damage model the Syulen has. I would like to see this fight again once the Titan has been brought up to standard, and for that matter whether the Syulen will toughen up with physicalized armor? Looks like stone.. but the wings were falling off like an intentional defense mechanism at 2m/s light kisses of hangar doors on day one for me, could be something is broken in their hp model? I thought I heard that somewhere earlier this past week, the Syulen has a physical damage bug, that extends to ballistic weapons. (But it might be all damage types?)

I think the syulen should have 3 S1 shiels to compensate for bien a bullet magnet, but for a starter it has 3900 qt fuel, so is Pyro Rated, can scape from most fights at will, and can do some PVE pretty good, plus looka very dope, so its a good starter, it just needs an extra shield i think
Great video, but as others have commented, you should have included a control fight with you in the Syulen and the other guy in the C8X (with all 4 guns). I don't doubt he could beat me in a fight in pretty much any ship, but the same could be true of you vs him XD
Regardless of if the Syulen pilot was good or not, A1 in the syulen for 1 fight would have made a more informative video. We know A1 is a good pilot, so saying the Syulen pilot was skilled is a weak argument, also A1 could have talked about the issues he would have while fighting the other pilot giving better insights to what the syulen is good at and where it struggles. Because we didn’t get any video from the syulen perspective we don’t know what you should focus on if you are a syulen pilot to maximize your chance of success as the average pilot is not as evasive as a pro pilot so perhaps the syulen vs a pieces with a pair of average pilots would be more balanced. I personally feel like the syulen should be one of the better combat ships among starters bc all the other starters have a niche where they are the best out of the starters, cutter is great long distance cargo, nomad can fit biggest vehicles in it’s bed, avenger is the best combat starter and cargo ship, pisces is tiny and fits in most ships. All the other starters have a place where they excel compared to other starters.

Could you test the San Tokia Been seeming videos of it today It seems loud, guns fire fast at reduced damage, should be mobile, but I’m assuming it’s con is its profile/ losing an alien engine thruster thing. Oh and it can gimble size 3’s which sounds good for dogfighting. It’s not fire me, I’d rather fly a stealth Sabre but I’d love to see your thoughts.

It would be nice if those Xian ships had some kind of deflector dish substance on the front of their arms to help counter face to face encounters So standard shielding, but extra resistance in front
logically, it is better to test the flight and combat performance with the weapons that are similar, but it should have been noted that Avenger had 1 hardpoint less than it can carry.

Isn't the stock titan loadout a gimballed S3? So, having a S4 is the same artificially strengthening a ship. Either way, this video is a bad analysis overall, as we see A1 go against the Syulen, so he can't say anything about flying it, how it feels, how it fights, he can say only what he thinks about fighting it. I wonder if they (the pilots fighting) even know that Syulen has side strafe more powerful than up/down strafe, which means that for better maneuvering the pilot should rather use sidestrafe and roll, rather than upstrafe and roll, what people usually do. So anyway I felt this video is a waste of time, and the question about s4 on Avenger confirms it, as I don't remember it being mentioned. Hope we see another video soon, with A1 actually flying the ship.@@temushin
@@LocalAlpha Stock loadout is a gimballed Mantis, but no one care's how a ship performs with its stock loadout. We want to see how it performs optimized. In this test it didn't matter because the Avenger(s) out-performed the Syulen anyway, but if it had been a close call, it wouldn't have really answered the question about which one was better because one was fighting at a disadvantage.
I wouldn't be surprised if master modes gave the Syulen the ability to outmaneuver the other starters. Speaking of which, i'm looking forward to when you redo your core skills videos for master modes.

It's a beautiful ship inside and out, and is fine as a courier and doing basic merc work. Not gonna fault anyone flying one around doing typical 'verse stuff. I'm mostly curious if XenoThreat is going to shoot at it regardless of the pilot reputation with them :D I also doubt that MM is going to sufficiently change the model, even with the crazy good retro thrust it has, to make it survivable in PvP at equal skill levels. That hit box with the pylons out is like 6x the body, it's huge. You can't escape getting punched in the face.
It's a flying apartment for carrying hot cargo to places very fast and maybe running a blockade, it's built to disengage from a PVP fight easily, but not to excel in combat despite how 'cool' it is, against other meta dogfighters. The C8X fight was a long endurance fight that appeared to be plagued with sFPS/desync issues that could have tilted the outcome, it was more or less a draw, either pilot could have ample time to gain advantage or disengage. For the Aurora I think this is unsurprising in Zero G because of the tiny and tuned profile of the Aurora and the sheer size of the Syulen. I'd like to see a rematch in low dense atmosphere, does the Syulens overwhelming thruster cap lend it a better rate battle in thick atmo?
Yeah, she is no PVP ship. However, I feel it was never truly made for it in mind, it is closer to a (very) light cargo/light courier and/or intro explorer (of some sort) with how even the internals feel. She is a runner not a fighter.
I feel like you guys might not be using the ship in a way that takes best advantage of it's strengths. One of the amazing features of this one is it's ability to slow down quickly naturally, and it's high forward boost thrust. This to me feels like the ship is best used by forcing closer then normal engagements, pressuring the enemy with a closer engagement then usual, or perhaps doing more of a hybrid-jousting where you end up closer to the target and can re-joust more quickly. Just some thoughts.
Slightly worse than I expected, but justified I think. I already saw the turn rates are worse than the Avenger. I expect the Syulen falls to the same thing as the Spirit and CIG built it for the new specs coming with Master Modes. All we can do it wait. I can say the Syulen is easier to fly in atmo than the Avenger. The Avenger you have to fly like a plane in atmo and the Syulen doesn't seem to care that it is in atmo.
It's a fun T2 starter. Fun to fly, looks cool, pretty good fuel. I looked at the profile and knew it would have PvP problems. But as more of a exploration and light cargo oriented starter I think it's pretty nice.
Shouldn't have been a starter ship. The same ship model could have been a heavy long range fighter. Just double the firepower, give it bigger shields, and more armour. Maybe better agility? Ofcourse make it more expensive.
She moves and hits like a dog fighter, but she’s flimsier and easier to hit than a 325a. It’s a shame. Also the weakness to missiles is wild. I love mine but I personally would not take it into PvP. I use mine for bunker missions. I do the missions then I go into space and bed log from orbit, like a satellite. For combat, even in pve, it gets killed too easy. Side note, it might be able to prey on some of the medium utilitarian ships quite well, like a little solo pirate. Take out a C1 or a Vulture and take some of their cargo…

I'm a noob 3 weeks into the game with Syulen as starter. I haven't gone looking for fights, just trying to complete some basic bugged box missions, but quite often get ambushed when trying to land my last drop. If I can run, I run, O Yes! BUT, once was cornered by something, well, I was pissed off with that, so went all in on crazy flight tactics, thrust, decouple, power shifting, kinda frantic and almost random, and after 5 minutes managed to blow whoever it was to smithereens, having saved missiles. Got lucky there. But proves it is possible. Don't pick on noob couriers, please, let 'em buy one more ship at least. 🤪

I think the Syulen is the gateway drug to combat, and then PvE is the gateway drug to PvP. Hopefully, the game evolution for newbies is Syulen>Box Missions>V/LRT's>Gladius>Higher Level PvE Missions>PvP With the 3x S3 guns, it can dish it out, it just can't take it. After making a few ships go "boom," hopefully newbies get the craving for more "booms" but with a sprinkle of salt
The syulen was my starter and definitely has some issues (not least of all how fragile the arms are) and definitely not for PvP, HOWEVER it's a GREAT PVE and run around ship, I've been running HRTs & VHRTs easily with it, and between it's ridiculous 2900 quantum fuel capacity (lots of range even with vk-00), 6000k uScu internal storage, bed and the 6scu cargo capacity, it's definitely got a lot going for it. I've since switched to C1 spirit for daily driver (and illegal bounty cargo) and M50 for dogfighting but I still get the syulen out if i need to zip around Stanton system picking up parts and upgrades.
it doesn't make sense that the pisces beat it... ok it's twice much bigger... but I think that the Syulen pilot wasn't using the proper aproach... and going too fast... syulen and piseces got the same maneuverability but syulen go more G and faster... he just came too fast and was never able to turn on the pisces while the pisces was .... that's becaue he was too vast... the pisces max speed is 142m/s the syulen 200m/s... has the syulen dropped to 150 he would had been able to turn more quickly and trade... and since he got more firepower and more shield he would had won... and then if the pisces would try to run the syulen would have more acceleration and more speed and could catch up... now vs the avenger well that ship has pretty much the same shield. firepower and weight and maneuverability, if not a little better but is smaller so ya it make sense he got the adventage, still don't have the same Gs... I think the syulen approach is to focus on it's strenght... engage slower... and trust your "thrusters" acceleration to then catchup.. accept to trade since syulen on paper got more fire power and more shield than many other starter ships.
I am watching this dog fight as I gather and seems to me... the guy that was in the Syulen wasn't really engaging his target all he was doing is being a target and just flying around .... How can you judge? I was thinking to get a Syulen, but now i don't know..GG
Was anyone actually surprised by this? The minute I saw the full profile of the thing I immediately knew she would be all looks and no bite. Thats okay though, not every ship that comes out needs to be S tier in combat. This thing can function as an excellent pve daily driver, I've personally been able to do up to VHRT in it because the PvE is just brain dead in dog fighting. Its a neat little ship, cool to fly around and do some chill box missions or something, but thats all and I'm okay with it.
I just bought this ship in the recent special offer thinking oh I'll give star citizen a try. It's nice to know I'm flying around in a giant pile of shit if it came to combat and practically anything else hahaha.
Space flight is one thing. Try to land this ship on a moon for repair after you got an arm shot of in a bounty (one missle hit will already be enough to do that). Its just really really bad. They cant do much about it. Its in the design of the ship. And its a bad one. Calling this a "starter" was a completely stupid idea (just the take-off alone ist a "starter"-dealbreaker. I got one just for the looks. I love it! I just can't see me using it with as little cargo it has against the Nomad. PS: Would have been better seeing you piloting the Syulen so we had a glimpse of how much of a struggle it is keeping this thing in line (its just PAIN!).
While I enjoyed the design of the Syulen, its too much of a PiTa during landings. Of which, the craft has the propensity to slide and roll over if the terrain is anything other than level. Combat-wise, the larger frontal area really makes it a mediocre craft for anything other than PvE, especially when the pylon arms are made of tissue paper. Lose one and the fight is pretty much over. My suggestions would include: To reduce the ships size except for when landing. Which it should spread out the landing feet more for greater stability. Beyond this the Syulens guns really need the options for gimbals, while the ship needs a sizable boost to its agility and armor.
Not that I expected the Syulen to do well in a PvP environment, as it's frontal cross section is way to big, but while Matt is a great pilot, it seemed to me like he was trying to fly it like an Arrow instead of what it is. Really need to use what you have and play to your strengths. He literally let the Pisces pick him apart at distance and take advantage of the size disparity, when the Syulen has twice the shields, more dps (exaggerated even more with 1 gun missing on the Pisces), and better acceleration and roll. I realize that doesn't radically change it's position in PvP tiers, but I was a little mystified by that fight in particular. Bottom line though, it's a very cool starter ship that is unique and fun to fly. It does well in PvE combat and most other PvE loops, with it's only big drawback being the inability to carry a vehicle. The upcoming "open containers" will make deliveries easier as well. I appreciate it's uniqueness and aesthetics.
I bought the syulen a few months into playing SC, and had it been my first ship i'd have refunded and quit after a few days. That ship is way to buggy and the vertical orientation for landing, plus it's very easy to park it so you can't get back in because of the stupid grav tech steps... makes it very not new player friendly no idea why they made it a starter
Starter is not the same as new player friendly. Starter ship are just what you work your way up with but this ship really isn’t great for people who are new to the game. I’d recommend the cutter, that is a fantastic ship. I have the cutter and the syulen and love them both, the syulen is not buggy but it is not always intuitive.

I find that when a ship has lost thrusters and you're dealing with a major torque imbalance, it's a lot easier to control when you decouple it.
This is true, but decoupling is already much harder in general.

With the engines so far out from the center of balance, I expected them to have a lot of leverage and so give good rates in space. A shame

The C8X fight was a long endurance fight that appeared to be plagued with sFPS/desync issues that could have tilted the outcome, it was more or less a draw, either pilot could have ample time to gain advantage or disengage. For the Aurora I think this is unsurprising in Zero G because of the tiny and tuned profile of the Aurora and the sheer size of the Syulen. I'd like to see a rematch in low dense atmosphere, does the Syulens overwhelming thruster cap lend it a better rate battle in thick atmo?
With the long triple wings, it should be way more maneuverable out of atmosphere than other ships in its class

Yeah, she is no PVP ship. However, I feel it was never truly made for it in mind, it is closer to a (very) light cargo/light courier and/or intro explorer (of some sort) with how even the internals feel. She is a runner not a fighter.

I feel like you guys might not be using the ship in a way that takes best advantage of it's strengths. One of the amazing features of this one is it's ability to slow down quickly naturally, and it's high forward boost thrust. This to me feels like the ship is best used by forcing closer then normal engagements, pressuring the enemy with a closer engagement then usual, or perhaps doing more of a hybrid-jousting where you end up closer to the target and can re-joust more quickly. Just some thoughts.
Also it has 4 salvos of 3 size 2 missiles that went unused.
Slightly worse than I expected, but justified I think. I already saw the turn rates are worse than the Avenger. I expect the Syulen falls to the same thing as the Spirit and CIG built it for the new specs coming with Master Modes.
All we can do it wait. I can say the Syulen is easier to fly in atmo than the Avenger. The Avenger you have to fly like a plane in atmo and the Syulen doesn't seem to care that it is in atmo.
It's a fun T2 starter. Fun to fly, looks cool, pretty good fuel.
I looked at the profile and knew it would have PvP problems. But as more of a exploration and light cargo oriented starter I think it's pretty nice.

Shouldn't have been a starter ship. The same ship model could have been a heavy long range fighter. Just double the firepower, give it bigger shields, and more armour. Maybe better agility? Ofcourse make it more expensive.
She moves and hits like a dog fighter, but she’s flimsier and easier to hit than a 325a. It’s a shame. Also the weakness to missiles is wild. I love mine but I personally would not take it into PvP. I use mine for bunker missions. I do the missions then I go into space and bed log from orbit, like a satellite. For combat, even in pve, it gets killed too easy. Side note, it might be able to prey on some of the medium utilitarian ships quite well, like a little solo pirate. Take out a C1 or a Vulture and take some of their cargo…

I'm a noob 3 weeks into the game with Syulen as starter. I haven't gone looking for fights, just trying to complete some basic bugged box missions, but quite often get ambushed when trying to land my last drop. If I can run, I run, O Yes! BUT, once was cornered by something, well, I was pissed off with that, so went all in on crazy flight tactics, thrust, decouple, power shifting, kinda frantic and almost random, and after 5 minutes managed to blow whoever it was to smithereens, having saved missiles. Got lucky there. But proves it is possible. Don't pick on noob couriers, please, let 'em buy one more ship at least. 🤪

I think the Syulen is the gateway drug to combat, and then PvE is the gateway drug to PvP. Hopefully, the game evolution for newbies is Syulen>Box Missions>V/LRT's>Gladius>Higher Level PvE Missions>PvP
With the 3x S3 guns, it can dish it out, it just can't take it. After making a few ships go "boom," hopefully newbies get the craving for more "booms" but with a sprinkle of salt
The syulen was my starter and definitely has some issues (not least of all how fragile the arms are) and definitely not for PvP, HOWEVER it's a GREAT PVE and run around ship, I've been running HRTs & VHRTs easily with it, and between it's ridiculous 2900 quantum fuel capacity (lots of range even with vk-00), 6000k uScu internal storage, bed and the 6scu cargo capacity, it's definitely got a lot going for it.
I've since switched to C1 spirit for daily driver (and illegal bounty cargo) and M50 for dogfighting but I still get the syulen out if i need to zip around Stanton system picking up parts and upgrades.
it doesn't make sense that the pisces beat it... ok it's twice much bigger... but I think that the Syulen pilot wasn't using the proper aproach... and going too fast...
syulen and piseces got the same maneuverability but syulen go more G and faster... he just came too fast and was never able to turn on the pisces while the pisces was ....
that's becaue he was too vast... the pisces max speed is 142m/s the syulen 200m/s... has the syulen dropped to 150 he would had been able to turn more quickly and trade... and since he got more firepower and more shield he would had won...
and then if the pisces would try to run the syulen would have more acceleration and more speed and could catch up...
now vs the avenger well that ship has pretty much the same shield. firepower and weight and maneuverability, if not a little better
but is smaller so ya it make sense he got the adventage, still don't have the same Gs...
I think the syulen approach is to focus on it's strenght... engage slower... and trust your "thrusters" acceleration to then catchup..
accept to trade since syulen on paper got more fire power and more shield than many other starter ships.
By CIG standards a Connie Andromeda is a starter. hehe

Was anyone actually surprised by this? The minute I saw the full profile of the thing I immediately knew she would be all looks and no bite. Thats okay though, not every ship that comes out needs to be S tier in combat. This thing can function as an excellent pve daily driver, I've personally been able to do up to VHRT in it because the PvE is just brain dead in dog fighting. Its a neat little ship, cool to fly around and do some chill box missions or something, but thats all and I'm okay with it.

I just bought this ship in the recent special offer thinking oh I'll give star citizen a try. It's nice to know I'm flying around in a giant pile of shit if it came to combat and practically anything else hahaha.

Space flight is one thing. Try to land this ship on a moon for repair after you got an arm shot of in a bounty (one missle hit will already be enough to do that). Its just really really bad. They cant do much about it. Its in the design of the ship. And its a bad one. Calling this a "starter" was a completely stupid idea (just the take-off alone ist a "starter"-dealbreaker. I got one just for the looks. I love it! I just can't see me using it with as little cargo it has against the Nomad. PS: Would have been better seeing you piloting the Syulen so we had a glimpse of how much of a struggle it is keeping this thing in line (its just PAIN!).
While I enjoyed the design of the Syulen, its too much of a PiTa during landings. Of which, the craft has the propensity to slide and roll over if the terrain is anything other than level. Combat-wise, the larger frontal area really makes it a mediocre craft for anything other than PvE, especially when the pylon arms are made of tissue paper. Lose one and the fight is pretty much over.
My suggestions would include: To reduce the ships size except for when landing. Which it should spread out the landing feet more for greater stability. Beyond this the Syulens guns really need the options for gimbals, while the ship needs a sizable boost to its agility and armor.

Not that I expected the Syulen to do well in a PvP environment, as it's frontal cross section is way to big, but while Matt is a great pilot, it seemed to me like he was trying to fly it like an Arrow instead of what it is. Really need to use what you have and play to your strengths. He literally let the Pisces pick him apart at distance and take advantage of the size disparity, when the Syulen has twice the shields, more dps (exaggerated even more with 1 gun missing on the Pisces), and better acceleration and roll. I realize that doesn't radically change it's position in PvP tiers, but I was a little mystified by that fight in particular.
Bottom line though, it's a very cool starter ship that is unique and fun to fly. It does well in PvE combat and most other PvE loops, with it's only big drawback being the inability to carry a vehicle. The upcoming "open containers" will make deliveries easier as well. I appreciate it's uniqueness and aesthetics.

I bought the syulen a few months into playing SC, and had it been my first ship i'd have refunded and quit after a few days. That ship is way to buggy and the vertical orientation for landing, plus it's very easy to park it so you can't get back in because of the stupid grav tech steps... makes it very not new player friendly no idea why they made it a starter
Starter is not the same as new player friendly. Starter ship are just what you work your way up with but this ship really isn’t great for people who are new to the game. I’d recommend the cutter, that is a fantastic ship. I have the cutter and the syulen and love them both, the syulen is not buggy but it is not always intuitive.
Thanks for the heads up, as a newer player from the outside this just magnifies the issue in my opinion. It took a UA-cam comment for me to learn that vs being told that in the store.
