David Niven was a treasure and much missed. Unaware he was gravely ill, I wrote a letter to him in the last year of his life and he graciously sent me a letter in return. I treasure that letter and still have it nearly 40 years on.

When Niven died the largest wreath was from the porters at London’s Heathrow Airport along with a card that said “To the finest gentleman who ever walked through these halls. He made a porter feel like a king”.

Niven’s memoirs, “The Moon’s a Balloon” and its sequel “All the Empty Horses”, are excellent. If I could attach images of the 40+ autobiographies/memoirs/diaries/letters in my library, I would to show that I have read every one that I know of in existence. Of all the men who published, Niven’s stand out as the best along with Nöel Coward’s letters. Five stars!

Bring on the Empty Horses is a fascinating but accurate inside view of Hollywood few could write; as he was well liked by most all actors and would have been on very familiar terms with most stars: Gable, Garbo, Bogart, Bacall, Flynn, the mogul Hearst and on and on- a must read.

I totally agree, on both counts. I'd round it out to three, though; Anthony Quinn's autobiography, 'One Man Tango' is wonderful.

Thanks for this, Niven was wonderful. Would there be any chance of showing some of Cavett’s interview with Burt Lancaster some day?

I do have nothing against the other celebs that were on this show but is this channel ever going to show the Dick Cavett shows where he interviews Jackie Gleason or Art Carney? How about any Honeymooners actors that were part of the main cast? These are rarities much like all the other Dick Cavett interviews

This video should have been shorter and concentrated on that German General story.
Makes you wonder who was that general whom he graciously let go on his way.

Odd, he’s not a Sir. No KBE or CBE.
How many times was David Niven on Dick Cavett?

His alcoholic wife was a horrible woman to him apparently.
