If everyone implemented auto bidding then google will constantly raise everyone’s bid to outbid each other.. pushing the cost up

You can get a similar affect with manual cpc bidding too. Eventually, you may get less clicks/conversions and have to raise your bid, and so on. Either method can be effective, it just depends on what is currently working inside your account.
