  • Burning Rangers (バーニングレンジャー) is a 1998 3D action title developed by Sonic Team for the Sega Saturn. In the game, the player takes on the role of a rookie in a futuristic firefighting force. With a jetpack and special fire-extinguishing laser gun, it's up to you put out blazing infernos and rescue trapped survivors.
    Burning Rangers is a pretty damn cool game. It features solid gameplay, some of the most impressive graphics on the Saturn (especially the lighting effects), a fairly compelling narrative with a very likeable cast of characters, and one helluva rockin' soundtrack. That said, it isn't without its flaws. The controls are a tad clunky, the game is short and levels seem to grow only shorter as things progress, and some elements (mainly bosses) appear downright broken in spots. Being a title that was released near the end of the Saturn's lifetime, I get the sense that Burning Rangers was probably rushed to market. Still, this is a very uniquely enjoyable game, and while it certainly has its flaws, Burning Rangers stands as one of the best examples of Sega's once boundless creativity. If you haven't played it before, give it a try.

Astral Chain is great don't get me wrong, but a Burning Rangers remake/sequel wouold have been legendary. My one fear is that in the current gaming climate there probably isn't room for a game about fire fighting power rangers.

    Man, this game looks incredible. I can’t believe this is a Saturn game! Sonic Team really knew how to push the hardware to its limit! Too bad we never got a full 3D Sonic game on it. Sonic Team probably could’ve made something fantastic using the Saturn for a Sonic game!

    • @epsilonalphaargo1948
      @epsilonalphaargo1948 6 місяців тому +1

      I'm afraid not. The reason why Sonic Team chose to move Sonic Adventure up to the Dreamcast (besides the fact that the Dreamcast was upcoming) was that the Saturn's limitations were making development a nightmare and it was becoming increasingly clear to them that a proper 3D Sonic game was beyond the Saturn's capabilities. The Sonic world in Sonic Jam was the best it could manage.

    • @jonpirovsky
      @jonpirovsky 3 місяці тому

    Get Christian Whitehead and his crew to make a HD port of this...
    -Retain the Saturn graphical style, but make it 60fps & remove the jerkiness of the visuals.
    -If the source code is lost, buy Rom hacks if you have to, whatever it takes.
    Burning Rangers was one of Sonic Team's most inspired offerings but the Saturn hardware was not really up to the the task, it would have been better on the DC. At the same time it was really cool to see ST release this on the Saturn when it was dead in the water in '98; it was sorta like one last defiant hurrah for the console and it's fans.
    .... BR deserves a second chance.

      There are no transparencies here, it's a clever texture/Sprite trick where they leave every next block blank so it's Actually like a checkerboard at a very small res to make it look like a transparency. Many Saturn titles did it. Such as Megaman X4.

      Chris James Sonic Adventure was rushed to the japanese market on the final months of 1998 (like Virtua Fighter 3:TB) with a lot of bugs and running only at 30fps instead of the 60fps planned to have on the gameplay. Also has low polygon count and very simple effects like the water as you previously said... And yes, Burning Rangers has much better worked effects and has fantastic transparencies via software rendering. This was an incredible achievement for the saturn and i can't imagine the PS1 running this game. Really an amazing game and a bit underrated as the saturn itself imo.

It makes sense considering it was supposed to be a Saturn game originally, but it's weird. The Dreamcast enabled it to run at a higher resolution, have a longer draw distance, and more consistent performance especially compared to Burning Rangers...but man, SA1 is definitely a game that's best played at native res, because upscaling it on an emulator it modern PC rerelease just exposes all the flaws which were at one point at least somewhat hidden. I kinda wonder if the game might even look a little better running at 240p internally, like this game does.

    I finally got to play this game and it is so fucking good. I think the weakest aspect of the game, aside from obvious stuff like frame drops, draw distance, etc, is exploring for civilians. Each one takes has a little unskippable cutscene and it just feels like it halts the gameplay. Not to mention some of the bigger levels being very easy to get lost in cuz the navigation doesn’t seem properly tuned for the side explorable areas. The game is at its best when you’re barreling through with the jet pack and dousing flames as you go. When you play the game like that, it is honestly exhilarating. And that is generally how I like to play the game. You won’t get good ranks doing that, but for my money it is a lot more fun.
    Overall, this game gets a solid 9/10 from me. Great and satisfying gameplay, fun levels, perfectly cheesy and awesome anime story, and phenomenal soundtrack. I highly recommend it if you haven’t played it. This game desperately needs a rerelease/remake. It deserves it.

    this games was awesome, I beat it, and that was the Japanese version, didn't understood anything, but the game is good, one of the best for it's time, even the Playstation didn't had something as good as this, they should remake this game and add additional languages like English and Spanish, with more camera options and all those camera bugs fixed.

    LOVE Saturn Memories! Such great video capture quality, great presentation with the graphic boarders for 4:3 aspect ratio, nice logos, and most importantly - quality gameplay samples by someone who actually knows how to play these games well! KEEP IT UP!!! I hope Saturn Memories never dies as long as sites like UA-cam exist. Fantastic stuff.

      SEGAHEADDY I've held off playing the Panzer Dragoon series for the longest time because my laptop wasn't powerful enough to run Yabause in OpenGL mode and record at the same time. Hardware acceleration will make a really big difference with those games. I'll also be able to emulate/record certain Model 3, DC, PS2, Wii, and 360 games that fit the theme of this channel.

    This, like NiGHTS, uses software ADPCM to reduce storage for little cost in quality, definitely useful in a game with a lot of speech. The mass of transparencies is great if flawed; they're rendered in a lower resolution to prevent the Saturn grinding to a halt with all the lighting effects on show. Tip for SSF - you can force it to render meshes as transparencies.

    • @CubamusPrime
      @CubamusPrime 7 років тому

      no one used the 2nd VDP chip for transparencies

    • @stephandolby
      @stephandolby 7 років тому +1

      For polygon transparency? No, as VDP1 handled that. VDP2 could, however, perform full-screen transparency - just make a playfield transparent and rotate it.

    I bought my Sega Saturn from a friend without any games. I decided right afterwards that I would go to a videogame store to buy two games that I craved for: the first one was Virtua Fighter 2; the second one I would decide when I got there.
    So I get to the store and grab VF2... And then I look at the other games available. I see only two titles that grabbed my interest: one was X-Men - Children of the Atom, a game that I loved on the arcades. The other one was something that I had never heard about, Burning Rangers. I had a look at the case and noticed the 3D graphics. And decided to gamble on it. Best decision I ever took! The graphics were really incredible for a Saturn game and it was so much fun... I still play it regularly.

    I have the Japanese version, it can be frustrating at times, but there is nothing else like it. Reminds of a combination of Nights and Tomb Raider. Used a gameshark to get through the very last level, didn't really want to keep trying from the beginning. My hat's off to those that get all the survivors! I will be selling it and perhaps getting the US version someday.
