      @@5MinutesBlender My pleasure ! Thanks for your shared knowledge , now I can render in good quality and quickly with a laptop away from my home.( Asus i5, 16 GB RAM, 2Gb Gpu ) Although until now this was only possible on the my home pc.
      (By terms of efficiency.)
      First i tried this method with a simple , short animation consisting of 450 frames. ( Fbx character, particle system based light sword, some reflective surfaces, HDRI background light with cycles render + 32 / denoising ) Shortly after the test start , i wached cycle of the runtime environment in disbelief: done !Then I saw the result : highly effective !I mean..Wow !

    Really cool! If your render is getting canceled on google colab ("c^"), that's probably because you're using too much memory, so I recommend to check the box "Use compact BVH" to lower the memory footprint (it will slow down the render a bit though). Of course, this solution is not the best for big projects, but for small ones/still images it works pretty nice.

    Worked even with linked assets, you just upload the blend files or the folder with the blend files of the assets to the drive.
    By the way I had to do some changes to the code, basically removin every space ("My Drive = MyDrive" and "Image Sequence = Image_Sequence")
    And for animation I used "-s 0 -e 10 -a"

      Please ensure that you have created the folders as shown in this tutorial, and then check the version number of the Blender file you are using. The Blender version is always changing, so the current version is different from what we used in this tutorial. You need to change this number in the script, and change it everywhere it is mentioned. All other things remain the same except the version number.

    it has started rendering frames but when i am going in image sequence folder, it shows that the folder is empty

    • @5MinutesBlender
      @5MinutesBlender  7 місяців тому

      It creates the frames initially in a similar folder within colab. Once this step is over (i.e. all frames are rendered), it will copy them to your drive folder. If you want to check it in the mean time, expand the file explorer on colab and check the folder called image sequence under content. You can even manually download them while the rendering is on. We purposefully did not direct the render result to the drive folder in order to make it faster and to avoid any accidental removal of the frames by another parallel process.

    • @5MinutesBlender
      @5MinutesBlender  Місяць тому +1

      The clock usually resets in a day or two, and you can again use it for free. Please ensure not to hit their time limit ever since hitting this limit several times can make colab less available for your account permanently. There is no specific limit because it depends on the network use and many other factors. I have seen if I choose the right time of the day it is safe to run colab for 40-45 minutes at a stretch, for 2 such runs in a single day spaced by a few hours. But this can change dynamically from day to day.

    To me, it is not useful, because this Linux version hasn't Animation Nodes installed. In fact, I don't see anything about a blender version with plugins installed.
    So, how can you use this with plugins?

    • @5MinutesBlender
      @5MinutesBlender  8 місяців тому +4

      If you mean add-ons, you can install them using the script. So in the colab notebook, use some commands like bpy.ops.preferences.addon_install(filepath=...) to install your add-on, then enable it using bpy.ops.preferences.addon_enable(module=...) and then render your scene.

    • @konradswart4069
      @konradswart4069 8 місяців тому

      @@fullyleaded As you might know, there is a huge issue with rendering in Blender with Animation Nodes. If you make extensive use of Animation Nodes, like switching the shaders by using those nodes, and you render this in the usual way, like with Ctrl F12, Blender _crashes immediately!_
      Thanks to Chris P and his UA-cam channel, there is a solution.
      You must not render directly, but render by using a Python script in the Scripting editor.
      You can find the code if you go to the video of Chris P,
      ua-cam.com/video/ydAmFR2wN9w/v-deo.html
      I not only render in Blender but also make animations in the Unity game engine. There I render with the Recorder asset, which renders _much faster!_
      However, this has another problem. If you decide to use Unity now, you can no longer install this Recorder asset, because it has been decommissioned. Only those who have used it in the past are allowed to use it. Moreover, the latest version of Unity wherein this Recorder works is Unity 2021.3f if I remember well.
      I also have made a midi program with its own renderer. However, its rendering happened on the CPU, and the graphics were based on the Windows API, which made it really unstable. So, I have made only a few videos with that.
      And, lastly, I have made a midi animation with Wolfram's Mathematica, which also has a renderer. However, the graphical capabilities for making midi animations were too restrictive.
      A few days ago I bought K-Cycles for Blender, but I haven't made an animation yet with that plugin. So, I don't know whether this will have stability issues.
      Oh yes. Before I forget. I also used Camtasia when I made animations with Synthesia. But that was way too primitive.

      Thanks for the appreciation and I'm glad that it worked 😊 Yes, you can use a lower sample number like 64 or even 50 unless you have very fine texture etc. But do these experiments first on your machine and ensure the quality you need. Then render a couple of frames on colab and check the time it needed for the actual render. Now render a series keeping the overall time within one hour. Don't go beyond that in one stretch, to remain in the good book of Google.

      We used png for image files or image sequence files. You can easily convert that image sequence into a video. This is the industry norm i.e. first render into image files and later combine them into a video mp4 file in any video editor. However, you can also render directly a video file as well if you wish (but this is not recommended as the image sequence has several advantages).

    • @5MinutesBlender
      @5MinutesBlender  2 місяці тому

      Sorry for the late response. Unfortunately, once the runtime disconnects the local data is completely wiped out, so there is no way to get back already rendered images. So what I do instead is (although I seldom encountered disconnection) I do it in a batch of 50 and keep saving the set. That way in the worst case I will only lose the last 50 files, everything else is saved. You can even do it in a batch of 25, or you can modify the script to save each frame into Google drive, so no frame is lost even in case of an abrupt disconnection.

    it s normal that is superslow the render in colab i have a simple i3 and it put 2 hour for a frame and google colab put 5 hours for a frame... it s normal?

    • @5MinutesBlender
      @5MinutesBlender  4 місяці тому

      No, it is not normal. It should not take even 2 hrs. I guess your render settings are probably incorrect or you forgot to enable GPU. Colab is usually quite fast, but based on the network traffic sometimes it can be slow. However, Colab free plan does not allow you to run on GPU for 5 hrs, so when you say that it took 5 hrs to render a frame, I think you are not using GPU.

    • @5MinutesBlender
      @5MinutesBlender  2 місяці тому

      I know you said that you changed it, but I will still insist you check if you have selected GPU in the render device under render properties. This same file has to be then saved and uploaded to Google Drive. Google Drive and Google Colab takes some time to sync up. So if you replace your file and immediately run Google Colab, it may actually use the older file. These are few things I suggest you to first check.

  • @TestingAccT-nv7ho
    @TestingAccT-nv7ho День тому

    Thanks, but I have a problem. Since the files are copied to the drive only after full rendering is done, my files get lost if the session is stopped by a network interruption or some other problem. Is there a way to copy it to the drive after about each 15 frames or so? I also accessed the Image Sequence folder from the content/drive while rendering, but I need to download each frame individually, which is tiring when there are lots of them.

    • @5MinutesBlender
      @5MinutesBlender  День тому +1

      There are two solutions. We can change the output file location in the script to Google drive, in that case the output will be saved directly in drive instead of colab. So if there is a disconnection, you have the already rendered frames intact. But this needs a constant data transfer between colab and drive which slows down the process. Our ultimate aim is to save time. So the other option is to break down the rendering into multiple parts. I usually render 50 frames or sometimes 25 frames at a stretch. It takes 15-20 minutes. Then I go for the next set. I never experienced a disconnection with such a small set, and never lost anything. It also acts as a reminder for me not to overuse colab (to avoid a ban). I usually render only 75 frames in a day and I never ever experienced any ban etc. I do have multiple machines and multiple accounts, but it is a risky bet if you are not cautious enough - so I don't recommend it to others 🙂

      Glad you liked this tutorial 😊 Yes, you can use this same script with the paid GPUs, no difference in the script. But before you go for the paid options, I suggest you try it with the free GPUs and be comfortable. Google imposes some restrictions even for the paid GPUs (when the uses are highly loaded). After several uses you'll get a fair idea about how long it takes to render some scene (it is not a constant value, it depends a lot on your scene, materials, textures and also the network load).

    Can we do renders on Eevee? Do we need to change something in the script or some other step?

    • @5MinutesBlender
      @5MinutesBlender  8 місяців тому +2

      There is no easy way to do that since we are using the command line input to run Blender, and Eevee is not supported through the command line mode, it always defaults to Cycles. Some people invented a clever way to fake a display within the command line mode and cheat Blender to run Eevee. So I won't say that it is impossible, but within the Colab environment it is going to be almost useless because you'll need to do the entire setup every time you connect, and secondly the speed advantage is also reduced when we use a fake display. It is more useful on a personal computer.

      If you terminated the program premature, the result is not guaranteed. But I would like mention one thing here.... when you browse a folder on Google Drive that has a lot of files, it shows only some of them at random. I mean you may not find all the files in the list until it completes fetching all the file details. But the files are probably there. Just try to download the whole output folder as a zip file and then check on your machine if something is missing. I have been into this problem and in my case all files were intact although they were not showing up.

      Umm, probably you tried to accidentally open that file instead of upload because it won't give this error when you try to upload. Upload means simply copying that file from your machine to your Google drive. The other possibility is, you may have an antivirus that is trying to read through every file you upload or download. If that is the case, disable that program during this upload.

      Please check if there is an error prior to this. This error is thrown when the script copies the rendered frames to your drive folder, which happens once the render is complete. But if the render fails for any reason, it fails in the copy step as well and then this error is shown. We need to see why the render did not work (often a file name mismatch remains the root cause).

      And on the side it explains the error
      The code you provided is failing because the folder /content/Image Sequence does not exist. This is likely because you did not complete Step-4 of the process, which involves rendering the animation on Colab.
      To fix this error, you can either re-run Step-4 or manually create the /content/Image Sequence folder. Once the folder exists, you can re-run the code and it should complete successfully.

      Please render it first on your local machine, maybe just a few frames say frame# 50, 100, 150, 200 etc and use Cycles for this. Then check if everything looks correct. Only then move it to colab. More than often the issues may be caught in the local rendering itself. If it renders correctly on your local machine but errs out on colab, we can investigate - but that is very rare, I have not seen any such case yet.

      Google has some usage restrictions for GPU. As discussed toward the end of this tutorial, follow the best practices to remain in the good book of Google and you'll be able to get GPU. For the time being, stay away from Google Colab for a couple of days so that the counter resets and you get back the access to a GPU. Then use it economically so that you are not again banned.

      Hi, since you are using an add-on, first you need to also install that add-on while installing blender on colab. However, based on the add-on design it may or may not work because we are working completely in a headless mode here (i.e. through command line input). Some add-ons may need you to be in UI mode. For example, we have developed a 3D data visualizer add-on (it is a paid add-on) that works with colab, it is designed that way. Please check the comment trail we exchanged with another viewer who had a similar requirement. It contains more details on how to install an add-on on colab and some related issues in that respect. Yes it is possible. You need to select the ffmpeg option in the output format in your blend file, then save it and upload to drive. It will create a video output in the same location where you get the frames, it will directly create the video instead of the frames. You need to ensure that the internet connection is stable, and you cannot use it for a long animation since Google Colab will timeout and the progress will be lost. It usually happens if your texture or HDRI file is missing. The purple color is indicative of a missing texture (either for the materials or for the world background). Please double check if you packed all your textures into the blend file (and saved it) before uploading to Google drive. @@NishaDevi-mf4sh Glad to know that it worked! 😊 Yes, packing is not mandatory, like I just rendered a fluid simulation a few days back in which case the fluid's baked data was uploaded to Google drive as a completely separate file (in fact as a separate folder, having several sub-folders, each sub-folder then contains thousands of files in it..... so a large file system). It rendered correctly. The key here is to use the correct "relative" file path everywhere. Then it does not matter whether you are rendering from your machine or on Google colab, it will use that relative path and get the textures or any such external file correctly. We talked about packing in this tutorial because that is simple to do, most reliable and it keeps everything clean. For large files, you can keep the files separate, just use relative file paths for those files.

      @@onezein Extremely sorry I missed this. I suggest you render one frame on your machine to ensure that everything works fine on your machine before you upload it to colab or google drive. Sometimes we accidentally hide the light in render or there maybe some other issues. Once it works fine on your machine, use the same setup on colab. If this does not resolve the issue, you can send your blend file to 5minblender@gmail.com so that we can verify it and suggest something.

      Hi, it seems that no render was done in your case and hence the output folder called Image Sequence was not created. This is the lower part of the error msg. Please scroll up and check its previous msg to find out why the render was not done in the first place. The source of the error lies there. This error which you sent is just a logical consequence of the original error which we need to solve first.

      @@rumblingtracks On colab, you can open a file explorer (something like windows explorer but it is on colab), you can browse and view the files or even upload/download files directly from colab. So if you think the render finished successfully and it threw an error only at the last step while moving it to your drive, kindly open the file explorer and check if it actually created the image sequence folder or not. If not, you should check where it kept those render outputs. It's possible that you made a typo somewhere. Anyway, please let me know what you find out when you get time. All the best!

      No problem. You can have any operating system on your machine, Google colab runs on Linux, so you need to use the Linux version in colab. You can, but use them very cautiously. I do use multiple accounts & I never got flagged. But it is risky, you need to time your jobs such that the system is never overused from your IP. The thumbrule is not to ever consume the entire bandwidth they provide to each account. Secondly, monitor the resource performance. If you think the network is busy (usually happens during peak hours in the day time), leave your job for a better time.

    sooooo bad you wasted my time, its only images not video animation

    • @5MinutesBlender
      @5MinutesBlender  8 місяців тому +1

      No it's not just for an image file. In the world of animation, a video is always treated as a collection of images, it is called an image sequence. The industry standard is to deal everything as an image sequence instead of a video. A video is only produced at the very end of the production process, rendering is never done as a video, it is almost always done as an image sequence. So here we have discussed how to generate that image sequence on colab. Later you'll just convert that image sequence into your final video either within Blender or in any other video editing software. That is the norm in use.

    i used botaniq in the project, but in the render it's not there as i would have to install it in the colab blender too, can u tell me what changes i have to make in that code and where do i have to add the new code lines?
    " If you mean add-ons, you can install them using the script. So in the colab notebook, use some commands like bpy.ops.preferences.addon_install(filepath=...) to install your add-on, then enable it using bpy.ops.preferences.addon_enable(module=...) and then render your scene. "

    • @5MinutesBlender
      @5MinutesBlender  7 місяців тому

      Add these commands after Blender is installed on colab i.e. after Step 2. Within the commands the only thing you'll need to change is the filepath for the add-on you're installing (upload botaniq add-on zip file to your google drive and mention that path after the filepath= part within quotes, and mention the module name or the add-on name after the module= part within quotes, the module name can be found on your system where botaniq is installed, from Edit Preferences Add-on screen). But this add-on may need additional modules in Blender. Usually a professional add-on will auto-install them when required. If not, you need to install them before this step in the same way.
