Thanks for the tips and advice! I used to have much more anxiety, and with therapy, I have learned how to navigate. Hearing you say that painting can help ease anxiety (by slowing down and accepting that water might not always flow the way we intend because that is the beauty of watercoloring) made a lightbulb go off in my head about why I was drawn to watercolor. It really does feel like the world slows down (isn't spinning out of control) for a little bit when I paint, and I love it. I really agree with what you say. It really does calm me and bring me joy. I'm just finding time to get back into watercolor and I'm glad I found your channel. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing your story and I’m so glad you found us here! Yes there is this amazing thing that happens when we create art and definitely letting go of control with watercolor is a must. Even though it is hard. Watercolor is self-care and I will never go back to not having in my life!

Hi Tammy! Love the advice and love the painting! The ocean is my happy place. I've never been anywhere near a palm tree and probably never will because I won't get on a plane LOL! I have been playing with watercolor for about three years now on and off. I think I watch more painting than actually pick up a brush and do it myself. One thing I noticed about discovering style ... even if you're going off of a tutorial, your way of painting is going to come through because you can't exactly copy anyone painting, especially with watercolor. What one ends up with is their own style, or at least a hint of their style. I see that on some of the FB pages where people will share their version all of the same tutorial, but their paintings are all so different. Some are realistic, others are loose, some are whimsical. I think I hope I'm making sense.

Hi Renee! The ocean is my happy place as well. So much peace and calm. And yes you are right, no two people paint the same landscape. Or flowers or whatever. We just have to be patient looking for a style and it comes through once we start to see patterns. Happy painting!

Thank you Stacy! So happy it hit home. And thank you for the encouragement for more landscapes. My next Skillshare class will be about painting landscapes outdoors! And my exclusive tutorial for Patreon members this week is on painting a desert landscape. I will keep the landscapes coming here and there as well on UA-cam ☺️

Great advice!! I always keep in mind too that the art I love to look at isn't necessarily necessarily going to be the art I love to paint (picked up that tidbit from a Margo Hallac video).

Total newbie to watercolor and loving this tutorial. Thank you. As a newbie, I can’t get those tropical blues and greens for the water. Will you share what you used in this painting to give me a starting point?

Hi there! For this painting, I was using my Winsor and Newton professional palette and I used an aqua color as well as a turquoise color. Wish I had more specifics but I just don’t keep track of the specific names! But I always like to make sure I have those two types of colors because they come in handy for those tropical waters ☺️

Love the video! My question: When I paint from reference, I get caught up in my head trying to make it look like the image, even though I know I don’t want to! It’s like I’m in auto mode trying to beat myself up. Any tips on how I can break free from that? Tysm Tammy. Love ya❤

Glad you like the video! I’d say, what works for me is just trying to focus on the basic shapes that you see. Rather than trying to make the image look like the reference exactly. Maybe sometimes with the basic shapes, you purposefully make some that have some lines or angles that are a little different than what you see. Also, maybe changing up the color palette and selecting colors that are completely different than what you see. It might help trick your brain that you are not going for a matching version. Let me know if that helps?
