Great job researching this! He was my favorite player as a kid. I will always recall 36 points, 19 assists and seven rebounds on May 8, 1970. He also added four steals.

Word. I grew up watching Clyde and my other favorite player was Earl 'The Pearl' Monroe, who also wore #10. Me and another kid on our basketball team both liked #10 so we called ourselves 'The Earl Twins'. :D

This is by far the most underrated single game performance in Finals History. I don't know how many steals he had but the last time I watched this full game, I counted 3 from Jerry West and I know he got a couple from Elgin Baylor

I was born in 2001 wayyyy after these legends had their battles, but Walt was and still is the upper echelon of a backcourt master that controls the flow of the game with his precision and wits. Still ridiculous to think nobody brings this game up anywhere near as much considering he went toe to toe and quite frankly humiliated Wilt, Jerry West, and Elgin Baylor whilst the MVP Reed was dragging his leg up the court. Clyde needs more respect for this sensational close out game performance
He was a clutch, team winner. Imagine him with jumping ability. He wanted to be a college QB but it wasn't happening back then.

He was always in control of his emotions...always thinking. Clyde was just a joy to watch play basketball. He played effortlessly. He was and still is my idol. I'm 59 years old...I think I would die if I met him. I even still have Puma "Clyde" sneakers...just like in 1976 when I played high school ball.

During the period of 1970-1974, there were only four standout teams...Knickerbockers, Bucks, Lakers and Celtics. But with the Knicks and Celtics, you saw superior ball movement up and down the court and around the key to break a man open for the shot. The 1972 and 1973 Eastern Conference finals series was basketball at its best with Hall of Famers from both teams. And the same for the Lakers when they played the Knicks for the title in 1970, 1972 and 1973. As a Knicks fan (and a Walt Frazier fan) for 47 years, I enjoy looking at these old videos of our only two titles.
During that era, they had a very good GM, in Eddie Donovan, who made great moves, in acquiring Dave D. in '68, and subsequently Lucas, and Earl M, along with a brilliant coach in Red H. Its hard to believe its now been fifty years, since that '70 title.

Such a fundamentally sound guard in all aspects of the game. In addition, his shutdown of Jerry West on top of his offensive production just makes one really admire this guy as an all-around player for any era.

The early 1970s saw the Knicks and Lakers facing each other in the Finals 3 times in 1970,1972, and 1973. Adam Silver would sell his wife and daughter to make it happen again.

one of the best performances in nba finals....he did n't only have 36p and 19 assists but also 7 rebounds and 5 steals to!he was amazing in both ends of the court as usual and did all these vs j.west(kobe of his time) who also had 28-6-5 in this game.both of them had amazing series,frazier avg 17.6p 7.7reb 10.4assists while the "logo" avg 31.3p 7.7assists!great battles back then...
Watching this makes you realize they were actually very good players back then. Game is at a high pace

I actually remember seeing this game on television. I knew he had 19 assists at the end of the game because that was the first, and last game for that fact that I ever counted assists before. That's why Clyde is one of my all time favorites.
Walt...should have won the MVP for this series. He was on fire. Superglide...Clyde.
Frazier's steal at the 10:10 mark was so "Clyde"!
To me in his era he was the man; in this game he single handedly dismantled the mighty Lakers.
As a 13 yr old growing up in NYC I watched this as I did ALL Knicks games. It was a thrilling time to be in New York while The Championships started to accumulate in Basketball Football, Baseball and Hockey.
Mr. Frazier was Elite Backcourt Professional who was flawless in his Skillset and also Leadership as an ultimate Team Player. He just made everybody better. His "Clyde" Personna off The Court was "Smooth" and Reserved without any Scandal just Cool Dignity. He was a Role Model. In fact, you could say that about the whole Knicks Team. To a Man they were just "Standup Guys." Coach Red Holtzman was the epitome of Coaching. As kids while playing Street Ball, we All quoted the Title of his book:

Seeing this since Max Kellerman pointed out that this is one of the greatest performances up there with MJ, Magic, and Giannis.
What was so good about this knicks team, was that they most always had at least 5 or 6 players in double figures, my guess, is more than any other team, ever. If they had the 3 point play back then, they would have been even better. To me, this was the best all time NBA team, and no, I'm not even from New York.
I agree with you but I'm going to have to say the Bulls with mj were the best. They went on a three peat beating Barkley, drexler, and magic in only six games. Then when mj left, the Bulls didn't win. But when he came back with rodman, they went on another three peat!

Best thing about this footage is no three pointer. I watched them every televised game as a young man. I lived on the Jersey Shore and received NY stations and saw probably all their home games. I don't remember how many away games were on the tube. Probably a lot in those days? I saw that basketball going into the locker room with the Knicks, I wonder where it was now.

The Jets won the super bowl. The USA beat Russia to the moon. And we had Woodstock.
Frazier was the greatest floor player of his time. Willis Reed said the ball belonged to him. He was smart, composed and quick. It was magical when Earl Monroe joined them!!
Don't get me wrong. West and Robertson were great, But Frazier was a great athlete.
"Fall back baby!" he called it. Funny to look at but the man had a very distinguished NBA career (and even moreso after - he's Dr. (PhD, not Md) Dick Barnett now)

I remember a game between the Knicks and the Bullets when Earl The Pearl Monroe was still with the Baltimore. Somewhere in the game Clyde fouled The Pearl. Frazier was so disgusted that he just sat down in the lane as the Pearl shot his first free throw. You could see from the camera under the basket Monroe just looking at Frazier still sitting in the lane. I think he got up for the second one. To this day I haven't been able to find that film anywhere. Hope it wasn't just my imagination but seems I remember that game actually happening.

The Knicks had Chamberlain's number. Lucas and Reed were such prolific outside shooters that they dominated Chamberlain.

Dkouts57 calls Frazier’s performance in this game a “myth.” That’s a bit harsh; not all of his stats were inflated. But one thing is true - Clyde didn’t have anything near 19 assists, unless maybe if you go by FIBA rules, where you get an assist if you pass to a teammate who gets fouled and makes at least one free throw. I counted 7 assists for Clyde, others say 9. Still, that’s 36 points, 7 to 9 dimes, a handful of boards, a handful of steals. That’s more messianic than a myth.
Frazier is easily top 5 guard point shooting defense, Curry stops no one West no D, Lebron crybaby, MJ, Magic, Robertson, Frazier.
Look how long the free throw line was, back then. That's when you made sure your free throws really counted, and put some effort into shooting them unlike cats nowadays. Even the 3 point line was much wider. Game is so soft now thanks to david stern
