The origional song and tune came from Scotland in the 1800s but was adapted to become the song we know now by Belfast musician Francis McPeake in the 1950s
The orchestra arrangement is by Jacob and Jules Buckley (Metropole Orquest) and was actually done several years ago for a concert with Jacob and the orchestra at Royal Albert Hall in London.
That was a beautiful collaboration! Great reaction. Jacob recently did a collab with Aurora for Greenpeace, a mashup of his song A Rock Somewhere and her song The Seed. It’s an amazing performance for a nice cause, I suggest checking it out.
Yeah... it's very weird for him to make assumptions about their relationship (or their personal desires) based on Dodie's on-stage body language. Dodie is an adult, a professional performer, and a colleague of Jacob's. She's not a shy little girl harboring secret crushes like she's in grade school.
Thank you for introducing me to Jacob Collier. I am a great Lucy Thomas fan and during one of your reviews of hers, you mentioned what a superb collaboration it would be if LT joined JC for a performance. Having never heard of Jacob before I investigated and watched some of his performances on YT. This guy is truly amazing. So, so different and the quality of his work is outstanding. Thank you again for the introduction to this performer.
Great reaction again. So you are not familiar with LAUFEY??? You simply have to dive into that heaven of brilliance... Icelandic multi talent. Cello soloist with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra at age 15, piano and guitar genius ! Berklee College of Music graduade. And now Iceland's latest Grammy winner. Her Tiny desk concert gives a good example of how she modernise old school jazz and makes it accessible to our younger generation. www.youtu.be.com/watch?v=avjI3_GIZBw
The song was written way before old saloons in the “Old West” were a thing. It’s an old Scottish folk ballad. It was first written down in the early 1800s but was believed to be based on traditional music passed down from generation to generation. Many of the songs of the late 1700s/early 1800s were first written down at that time in an attempt to capture what was a vanishing highland culture as the clearances replaced people with sheep and vast numbers of Scots were displaced and moved overseas notably to the US. It is likely they took their songs and culture with them and this forms the root of many “old” songs in the US.
Jacob and dodie did a remarkable cover of "Here Comes the Sun" a few years ago (video on Jacob's channel, filmed in his backyard garden). (And if you re-watch Jacob's "Little Blue" video you might recognize dodie in amongst the choir.)
Sung in many pubs across the UK especially Scotland. There is a choral group who did a fantastic version during the Covid era ua-cam.com/video/FN9_eDPeVg0/v-deo.html The lyrics and melody are a variant of the song "The Braes of Balquhither" by Scottish poet Robert Tannahill (1774-1810) and Scottish composer Robert Archibald Smith (1780-1829), but were adapted by Belfast musician Francis McPeake (1885-1971) into "Wild Mountain Thyme" and first recorded by his family in the 1950s.
Great reaction, like so many of those that you share with us. Dodie is a close and long term friend/companion of Jacob's - if they have a thing, who knows .......but I noticed her reaction to him as well - kinda hard to miss! Jacob never ceases to amaze - the variety, the depth, the genuine, humble, and honest presentation. He is such a gift - something that makes this "odd" and sometimes difficult world, just a little better. Thank you for highlighting something so good - so good for us all.
You probably really should know about Laughey since she's the latest "savior" of jazz and literally the biggest name in Jazz by far today based on streaming counts. She really does a lot of Ella Fitzgerald and Chet Baker type songs. But you will have to learn to pronounce her name correctly. (Lay-uh-vee, sort of). Dodie has worked with Jacob a number of times, although he wasn't even supposed to be part of this concert but Ben Folds brought him in at the last minute. A couple of nights later Jacob did his own concert with his band, the NSO and the Aeolian singers premiering World O World. Yes, NSO is the National Symphony that is resident at the Kennedy Center. I saw them play Beethoven and Ein Heldenleben there a couple of nights ago.
Not my first or usual choice for listening, but still fun to hear this and of course, imo your reaction is worth any song choice you give us. 😀 Hope you have a great weekend my friend!
To me, this melody has a very Celtic or Irish feel. It just doesn't ring true because there are no accents and the words are all purely pronounced in English. Re-listen to this and in your mind throw in some Irish syntax, pronunciation, and instruments and think you might feel what I'm feeling. :)
The song is an old Scots song from the 1700/1800s so yes Celtic but Scots rather than Irish. It was adapted by an Irishman in the 1950s to the song we know today so both elements are there. There’s a lot of giveaways, “will ye go lassie go”, “among the bloomin’ heather” etc. very Scots phrasing.
I've never heard of any of them. But they have beautiful voices. By the way, Pentatonix just released a new live version of Bohemian Rhapsody today. If you get a chance, will you react to it.

When Jacob started conducting the audience it gave me goosebumps! Was that a little bit of heaven I heard??
Awww🥹….so cute💝
That would be such a fun show to go to!

Not my cup of tea but Wow! That's a whole lotta talent.

Totally agree. Rainy days in Colorado 😊 patti
@@patriciajohnson9654 Hi Patti, been raining here in my part of California too. 😀 Good hearing from you as always. Hope you are well and happy.

Stone Sour - Bother
Please & Thank you🤘🏼
This has a very folk/gospel melancholy sound. Talk about switching it up. He likes to be perfectly imperfect.

@@shammylevva Thanks for the explanation and history! :)
Thanks for this comment!
I believe Dodie has sang with Jacob previously (see “Here Comes the Sun”).

Larry, you missed Dodie from Wild Mountain Thyme in the Little Blue video. She is
in the far group, second from right, square cut black dress.
Laufey is definitely a better singer than dodie. Give her another chance.
I've never heard of any of them. But they have beautiful voices.
By the way, Pentatonix just released a new live version of Bohemian Rhapsody today. If you get a chance, will you react to it.
Boy, you have GOT to do a deep dive on this guy. I will also definitely look for that release, thanks!
