Hi Rob, great video again! Looks an awesome bike abd lots if new tech as well! P.S. I think the Tour+ and EMTB modes are not configurable as they are both sort of "automatic" modes that adjust to the rider input and terrain? I'm not sure but that seems plausible. 😁
The issue I have with bosch is the odometer lies about the speed. When you are at 20mph you are really going 18 more or less. I tried to get this adjust at the store, but the range of adjustment is very small. Not sure how any of the others platforms work, but because of this I will be trying a different platform. Another dynamic you may want to add in you future reviews.
Hey Rob Rides Emtb! Nice job of keeping us updated on the latest advancements! Perhaps Bosch will update the app to include all modes in the tweakable category! Have a pleasant day! Ride ride ride!
I’m 6’2” and ride a 2021 XL 9.7, I wish was a little longer on the reach but my biggest complaint is the high seat tube, wish this new model solve that and the bigger battery is an awesome improvement, the controls were clunky before and still not ideal but it wouldn’t move away from the purchase. Nice video Rob and excited to hear your considerations.🤘👍👊
I can't wait to get mine! In Januar I will get the 9.8 GX. Put AXS on it myself, saves me 7 months waiting. I own the Trek E-caliber 9.6, really nice bike. Light weight and easy to ride above the speed limit. But I do mis the full Power that Bosch CX provides. And riding in the Alps with just 60 mm of rear travel isn't the best experience. For the "dutch mountains" perfect bike.
Great review, I was really looking forward to this. I have been waiting a whole year for my 2021 9.8xt and after the delivery has been bumped back for the third time, now to April 2022 I argued that I was getting an outdated model. After some price negotiations we changed my order for this 2022 9.8xt. ETA April 2022..... HOPEFULLY! so I'll be looking forward to see your in depth reviews. Many thanks!
@@burnx45 I have been thinking about just that. its kind of crazy but what are we supposed to do. I called trek and they pretty much said there is nothing they can do. They did tell me that nothing is going to change for 2023 so thats a win.
Just so people know with your current Bosch bike if you buy the Nyon display you get all those new Bosch features barring the bigger battery. The new firmware gives you the new Tour+ mode and and you can get custom modes where you can dial the power as you want. The Nyon display features turn by turn navigation and range analyser. Type in a destination the range computer will tell you what modes you can use to get to that destination etc. The Nyon display includes a new more ergonomic controller too. Tour+ gives you 121KM range based on a 90KG weight. Eco mode gives you around 170KMs
Looks amazing. But it's a total shame that the lower models don't get the new Bosch system. Was looking forward to upgrade a new 5 or 7 with the new Bosch CX / 750 to my own taste...

Looks like the bike does actually come with AXS dropper - my demo bike must be incorrectly specced with standard dropper. Occasionally the early release test bikes aren’t 100% to spec but trek list it as coming with AXS dropper in the proper spec list
Great review as always. Looks like my 6month old 9.8xt is out of date already 🤦🏼♂️. I could really do with that 750w battery in the alps, but gobsmacked that it adds over a kilo to the bike. The Trek Rail is always nice but I'm not sure about the 750Wh battery, you pay so much for carbon frame and carbon wheels and then they add an extra large battery which negates nearly all weight savings. Even if carbon wheels do help in other ways with responsiveness etc. For me personally I have a 625Wh battery in my current bike and spend 99% of my time in Tour and eMTB mode, even after epic 4-5h rides I have a little left. I don't think I need a 750Wh battery personally and I'd rather have the weight savings. Personally I'd be more interested in a sub 20 kg hyper efficient Rail, take some lessons from the Orbea Rise basically. And the AirWiz? I'd rather spend the money on something else honestly, I can measure my own tire and shock pressures. However the AXS suspension is something else entirely, I don't think the tech is quite there yet (it looks ugly and stuck on for a start) but I can see a future where the entire bike and motor is integrated and it's adjusting 50 parameters on the fly depending on incline, terrain, rider effort, rider is seated/standing etc. The tech is possible, but it's probably going to take 10 years for it to arrive. Then there will be some people who go full tech, and others who back to rigid analog steel bikes... But SRAM is in a very, very good place here. They need a motor, that's what they need. Then they have more or less the entire package and can integrate everything. And if everything is integrated you can do lots of stuff, ease off the motor when changing gears for a start. If I was Shimano right now I'd feel forced to start making suspension components. Because I believe the future is integration of all the bikes components to a unified riding experience.
Agreed, Its apparent EMTB evolution is stuck behind battery tech advancements, thats mostly what is keeping us from having lighter weight ebikes. With that said, until light weight batteries can be produced, I would really love for manufacturers to start allowing for battery capacity customization, especially for bikes with removable batteries like this. Having the choice to spec this with a 300-400wh instead of the full 700+ (or even both) would be ideal for those not needing the range or full power, and wanting to shed some weight for a livelier bike in one package.
Run a mini mullet with a 3.0” Minion DHF up front with a 2.6” DHR EXO+ in back paired with an I9 backcountry 360. . I’ve been running it on my Rail for a while and it’s great.
I would like to know how you fit on this Trek compared to the old one and also compared to how you fit on the Kenevo which I remember you felt comfortable with.
It's very rare that you hit the stem when you crash, and the display is less obtrusive than the stem, so your not gonna hit the display in a crash. My rail 9.7 has the display in the same place and I've crashed it quite a few times. Never have I even touched the display in a crash
Airwiz sounds kinda dumb to me. I don't need a little electronic pressure gauge on my fork and shock. A regular shock pump already tells you the pressure and setting sag is pretty easy to do and generally only needs to be checked once a year or maybe once in summer and once in winter. It's unnecessary complexity and just another thing to break on an already very expensive bike. They can keep the little gizmos and give me proper useful features like a floating axle with a pinch bolt like what Fox have done with their forks. That legitimately reduces binding and improves the performance of the fork.
It looks like the 2021 Cannondale Moterra. Even though the tubing may look symmetrical, it sometimes gets in the way. I got rid of my Moterra because i kept hitting my knees on the top tube during aggressive riding.
Thanks Rob Really looking forward to the review/ comparison with your existing Rail 5. I am very interested to know if there is any perceivable difference to motor power delivery

HOWEVER the new MTB TREKs looks like I will start again with mod equip .... the times is right. I want to keep putting in the effort so how does this perform WITHOUT the batt assist running please?
Loved my 2020 Rail 5 but sold it a few weeks ago when I heard the lower models are getting left behind in battery range, always loved Trek but jumped ship and currently have a 2022 Cube ordered for January
In the motorcycle world we have had tyre pressure sensors for a long time When you are racing bikes, tyre pressures change a lot throughout the race So you can make a decision on what pressure to run, when you know how much it goes up by when you're on circuit .it will be interesting to see, how much change if any on an EMTB
position is not the best (amongst other systems), but is the best amongst treks/bosch systems.... but together with that still MASSIVE (comparing to others) control....it's like 5-10 years behind other systems ... (just look at Spesh Levo or Trek EXe!)
I have one question: Do you can use Tyre Wiz and drive tubeless? So don‘t know, if it‘s possible, if the trek is set up like this. The Tyres aren‘t „unflattable“?
Seems like this bike has alot of dropper post travel. How much travel can you have? My G1 has a straight seat tube so can fit a bag 200mm dropper if I want.
Everyone is looking forward to svelte and streamlined under 10kg eMTB's with big power and a five fold increase in battery life. Maybe the mid 2030's/2040's we'll finally see the eMTB's we really want.
Yes, i thought in 2018 that by now i would be able to buy a lighter, longer lasting bike.... Now you have to choose... Light and low power... Heavy and powerful 😂
Hey Rob. I have a Rail 5 2022 on the way, it comes with Rekon 2.6 Front and Rear, I was going to add Zeb 170 Travel and what tyres would you suggest for Enduro riding with out too much weight / drain on the Battery. I was thinking of leaving the rekon on the rear but happy to re shoe.
Hi Rob congrats for this video. Since you have the new Bosch smart system in hands, can we connect a cable to power the smartphone as for the current Kiox ? Equally, does it offer the in-app lock protection option as it does with the current kiox ? Best
How heavy?! Thank goodness the Rail 5 is still available! Look at the Giant Stance E+2 I got for my Wife: £3300. OK only 500wh battery but app to adjust the 5 power levels plus there's a 6th adaptive setting. Not only that it comes with a 6A charger and the charger has a setting to charge to 60% for optimum storage. The battery needs a key to extract it but it clicks back in no key required unlike the Trek. I feel Bosch has to a degree let down its existing users as the new system is not backward compatable, though I find my R5 does what I need at the price. The way forward in my opinion is not more bells and whistles but internal gearboxed rendering drive train maintenance low or unneccessary. Bigger capacity batteries fine but not at expense of size and weight. You bet when Bosch 'upgrade' again you will be once again left behind as we were. I would like to see built in security on bikes and possibly adjustable rear pivot geometry that can make the air shock progressive, linear or inbetween
Hi, Rob. Love your videos but I've got a question: I'm looking for an e-MTB to replace my few years old hardtail Scott 760. After talking with my local bike shop - and not wanting to spend an arm and a leg or the $NZ10,000 for a Trek Rail 7 - I'm weighing up between a Trek Rail 5 & a Focus Jam 2 (6.7, maybe?). The Trek has slightly better drive train components (Deore vs SLX, or maybe I'm wrong?) but the Focus has a 625Wh battery as opposed to the Rail's 500Wh. Both are running the Bosch gen 4 motor. As they both cost $NZ8499, price isn't a deciding factor here so would you recommend one over the other? My wife has a Trek Powerfly 4 (hardtail) and I do like the Treks but I'm intrigued by the Focus. Keep up the good work!
Trek have been playing catch up with brands like Specialized on Ebikes but wow looks like they’ve got a head of the curve with this one. Would you agree Rob? Is it time to ditch the Levo and go TREK?
That's why we vote with our wallets and wait for the prices to come back down. Glad i got one when i did. I did not even get the bike I wanted, but it will have do for a while.
Good intro Rob. I’m interested to know what you think of the stock tyres. The SE5 has been a good rear tyre on my Rail 7 in similar riding locations to you. For the AirWiz stuff, what’s the battery charge/change situation like. On a separate note - have you looked at the new RS Domain fork - seems like a good upgrade from the Rail 7s Yari without blowing the budget on a Zeb?
brands should start standardizing an ebike mount, and make it compatible with pinion gearboxea.... like seriously theres something about proprietary standards that doesn't tick with me
Rob, I have the 2021 rail 7 and apart from the harsh front suspension, the bike is great and mega reliable, the only rubbish thing is the charging point cover, which I don't use but is pants. Is the 2022 the same cover?
Greetings Rob,a quick question for you regarding the Trek Rail XT9.9,.8..The Zeb front fork is 160mm travel but is it possible to raise the travel to 170mm ?Keep up the great work from the land down under.
The bike looks sick...but the price, the weight, no AXS dropper and the display just plonked on the top of the frame is a no from me. My 1995 Gas Gas 350 trials bike had the clock/Speedo integrated into the plastics. The suspension is nice but it's not really smart suspension, heading in the right direction though.
hi Rob...the big question that riders like myself are thinking of is...why should i replace my 2021 rail for this one? as you alreat have the existing rail 5, it will be nice to check them out head to head...thank you!
Nice to see Trek has made frames that can fit me, nice to see reach, I ma riding a large Nicolai/Geometron g1 with 515mm reach. So if I were to get a e bike I would get a Nicolai. But I have a Trek fobia. Failed headtube on carbon bikes, seen the footage of it, it was sende buds ths thad a video of it, the guy had 2 frames fail, various assambly issues in the pas tive seen on the web, my own experience with horrible tolerances on 2010 hardtails, my 2014 fuel ex was flexy, but I see Trek has improved things slog, but I hope snapping carbon frames is not a common thing. Still do the kinked seat tube, silly if you ask me. Is the loose Mino Link still an issue? I know previously analog bikes had this issue. So my question is do the bolts loosen up and bearings press out and did you ever lose the Mino Link chip like many did on analog bikes before?
I've heard Bosch and SRAM were working on powering the AXS derailleur by the bike battery. Do you know if Bosch has included this option in the latest version of the Bosch motor / controller?
Even with all the high end and carbon components 23.5kg is still pretty heavy when Trek have hone to the expense of adding all the lightweight components. You mentioned rider experience Rob, but I'm just wondering how much better this bike would be if they went the other way and had a 360wh battery and the option of a range extender. What would that do to tge rider experience? Because obviously all the expensive components are there to compensate (to an extent) for the additional weight of the 750wh battery.
Are the old old models being sold off cheap Rob ? My budget wouldn’t cover the forks , not many can afford the tackle shown here , cheers shaneweightman uk 🇬🇧 actually I’ve bought good cars less than half the price of this ,,,, makes ya laugh , the profit margins must be huge
Don't mind the weight. Is about the rider will discovered the full potential of the bike. The rider will adjust and adpat to the bike. Don't Mind the weight if you're a pro rider... You're not even a ex pro rider..
£12,500. That is a lot of bunce, whichever way you want to cut it. Basically twice what I would pay (through gritted teeth) for my next eeb. To quote a great (Ozzy) man: “Yeah. Nah.”
great. it will cost as much as comfy car, nobody will be able to get it until 2024 when it will be totally outdated and by that time, 16 new bike models will be launched which also won't be available for at least 4 years. This is a joke of some sort.
Rob, I don't agree with you at all with the position of the Kiox: you have to lower your eyesight so that you don't look forward at all, this is the best way to crash! 👎
I still think the person/team designing these screens and controllers for Bosch clearly has never been a true rider. Why not integrate that screen better into the top tube? Why make that boxy looking crap? The controller looks like something out of star trek. Meh. We want less with all the bells. Give us a discreet screen on the top tube. Give us simple UP/DOWN buttons next to the dropper. Leave the fiddling for the app.
Have a look at the new rockymountain e-bike. Looks like they listen to ppl and have kept it simple on the bars and integrated the display into the top tube 👌

Let us know how the Cube rides!?
Hi Rob, I own the 2021 rail 7 which I love. Can you make a comparison video with last year's rail? BTW your channel rocks.🇮🇱
Great bike and a great review. I thought the suspension was going to be active… 🤔 so a bit of a shame
In the motorcycle world we have had tyre pressure sensors for a long time
When you are racing bikes, tyre pressures change a lot throughout the race
So you can make a decision on what pressure to run, when you know how much it goes up by when you're on circuit .it will be interesting to see, how much change if any on an EMTB
Agree!
position is not the best (amongst other systems), but is the best amongst treks/bosch systems.... but together with that still MASSIVE (comparing to others) control....it's like 5-10 years behind other systems ... (just look at Spesh Levo or Trek EXe!)
Very nice bit of kit, I expect that it can now take a water bottle too.
Rob that display position looks like I should tie my boat up to it,bloody awful,Shimano 7000 set up still the best for mtb
Danks Robbie four dis vids.If day had a free style pit rich theres mays be a difference. Dont yous agries?
Will the new 725 fit previous rail models with the 625 battery
How is it compared to Gen 3 Levo?
15k here in Australia for the top spec model. I think I'd go on a holiday instead. Oh wait, we're in prison and can't go anywhere
Max igan is in mexico now because of your facist government
I'm awaiting both Trek Rail 9 AND the ability to travel. Didn't know about Max, disappointed he got so spooked. Hold Fast.
Trek have been playing catch up with brands like Specialized on Ebikes but wow looks like they’ve got a head of the curve with this one. Would you agree Rob? Is it time to ditch the Levo and go TREK?
After the last Yeti review, Rob is now too afraid to talk about the price of the new bikes, that's how ridiculous they got.
On a separate note - have you looked at the new RS Domain fork - seems like a good upgrade from the Rail 7s Yari without blowing the budget on a Zeb?
went in too my local trek shop to look at buying a rail 5 no bikes till the end of jan 2022 so bought a Giant instead
brands should start standardizing an ebike mount, and make it compatible with pinion gearboxea.... like seriously theres something about proprietary standards that doesn't tick with me
Paint is fire
It really is
Rob, I have the 2021 rail 7 and apart from the harsh front suspension, the bike is great and mega reliable, the only rubbish thing is the charging point cover, which I don't use but is pants. Is the 2022 the same cover?
Yes it’s the same. What issues have you had with the cover?
@@RobRidesEMTB the spring giving up even thou I don't use it.
Greetings Rob,a quick question for you regarding the Trek Rail XT9.9,.8..The Zeb front fork is 160mm travel but is it possible to raise the travel to 170mm ?Keep up the great work from the land down under.
Hi Bato. Yes, it’s OK to run at 170mm front and Trek say it’s fine also. Thanks, Rob
So the Air wiz doesn't help you further tune your shock like the SkockWiz? It would be awesome if it did that.
What are those stick lights?? Thanks
For that kind of money, the kiosk should be integrated into the top tube!
Rocky mt are looking sick are u getting them to test high sprocket new motor
Love the sound of ur voice rob, is that weird
yes
Not wierd if u like man love.
Two words... Rocky Mountain
TOP VID MATE
Rob any chance you could get your hands on the new Giant Reign E+ ?
Did the update the frame for more shock options and clearance with the chamber of the shocks?
How much is the cheapest Bosch Smart system Trek Rail? and do you expect a cheaper Aluminium model to be released?
i have a orange crush pro is there a cheep ish battery and motor combo which will fit my bike
I have a 22 rail 5 will the 750 battery fit?
What is the to end speed?
Even with all the high end and carbon components 23.5kg is still pretty heavy when Trek have hone to the expense of adding all the lightweight components.
You mentioned rider experience Rob, but I'm just wondering how much better this bike would be if they went the other way and had a 360wh battery and the option of a range extender. What would that do to tge rider experience? Because obviously all the expensive components are there to compensate (to an extent) for the additional weight of the 750wh battery.
Sorry to be off topic but do you do voice over adds I just watched a video on SAFEMOON and it sure sounds like your voice
Is it compatible with a range extender? (I often ride 100Km plus, being a big guy I tend to drain batteries fast).
Still using a knock block I presume?
I like it
12 grand for a bike. people are bloody mad
Please review the new Rocky Mountain
Take all of my money 😍
Great looking bike but the integration with Bosch is so dated looking. I ride a 2021 jam2 with kiox and think it looks more subdued than this setup.
Nice bike
Are the old old models being sold off cheap Rob ? My budget wouldn’t cover the forks , not many can afford the tackle shown here , cheers shaneweightman uk 🇬🇧 actually I’ve bought good cars less than half the price of this ,,,, makes ya laugh , the profit margins must be huge
Don't mind the weight. Is about the rider will discovered the full potential of the bike. The rider will adjust and adpat to the bike. Don't Mind the weight if you're a pro rider... You're not even a ex pro rider..
If only I could afford it :l
£12,500. That is a lot of bunce, whichever way you want to cut it. Basically twice what I would pay (through gritted teeth) for my next eeb.
To quote a great (Ozzy) man: “Yeah. Nah.”
nice motorcycle.
Vroom 🏍
great. it will cost as much as comfy car, nobody will be able to get it until 2024 when it will be totally outdated and by that time, 16 new bike models will be launched which also won't be available for at least 4 years.
Looks like Bosch listened to us 😊. Gen 4 is spot on!!! Well done Bosch
