- Famous Telecasters: In the late 60s there was an interest by some of the Southern California rock groups in country flavored themes which began a trend in recording in places like Nashville and using the additional instruments like the pedal steel guitar and banjo.
However, many guitar player imitated the pedal steel guitar licks, which created its own unique sound.
Clarence White streched the boundaries with his custom B Bender Telecaster. The strap button was attached to a lever that moves up and down about an inch. When you wear the guitar over your shoulder and push down on the neck, the pressure pulls the strap button upward, activating the lever system and raising the pitch of the B string by a whole tone (up to a C#). Those steel-like bends were more easily achieved and opening a bridge between country and rock. White's talents with the new contraption are all over the Byrds' "You Ain't Going Nowhere", "Buckaroo" and "Lover of the Bayou," in addition to his work on the Everly Brothers' "I'm on My Way Home Again", Joe Cocker's "Dear Landlord" and Arlo Guthrie's "Coming Into Los Angeles". I interviewed Marty Steurt who explained and demonstrated the soul of the Clarence White B Bender Telecaster.
Clarence White is one of the GREATS and one of the most influential players of all time. STILL doesn’t get the credit he deserves.
Will be seeing Marty and the Fabulous Superlatives live on the 24th of September and he’ll be playing that guitar, no doubt! Can’t wait!

Has anybody reading this seen the 2023 documentary Brother in Blues ? It’s about the Vaughan brothers. I haven’t seen it yet but it’s on the must watch list. Love to hear from anybody that’s seen it.
