  • If you think slavery is a thing of the past, think again. Millions of people around the world are trapped in modern slavery - and they could be working for you. In this powerful talk Kate Garbers makes the unseen seen and helps us spot the signs of modern slavery in our midst.
Kate Garbers is a founder and director of Unseen, a charity that provides safety, hope and choice to survivors of human trafficking and modern slavery. As well as providing 24/7 supported safe accommodation for survivors and the UK’s National Modern Slavery Helpline, Unseen works to raise awareness of this crime. Kate has spent the last ten years working directly with survivors, law enforcement agencies and governments to work out how we can effectively tackle the issue of trafficking and slavery.
    --
At TEDxExeter 2018 we focussed on making connections - and building bridges. Our speakers challenged us to reflect on how, in this interconnected, interdependent world, global issues affect all of our lives, and our actions affect others. In these turbulent times of shock political outcomes, “fake news”, data breaches, war, mass migration, rapid technological progress and climate change we believe that ideas have the power to change attitudes, lives, and ultimately, the world.

An amazing talk that sheds a light on the hidden world of modern day slavery. The shocking thing is that it may be taking place right now in the village, town or city you are living in. There's a thought provoking moment when Kate states how many slaves "work for her' and ask, how many are working for us and keeping us in the lifestyles that we're accustomed to.

As an average Canadian, I am forced to give up a half of my income in taxes. Most of what’s left is used to pay mortgage interest. Only a tiny portion of my money is left for food and other basic necessities. Legally, I am a free man, but in reality I have no choice but to keep working just to survive and not be thrown out on the street. My life is comfortable if you compare me to Grace, but it only means that my slavers are much more sophisticated. They have evolved and learned to squeeze us just enough so we remain productive and they can maximize their long term revenue. THIS is the modern day slavery.

I am a year too late but my answer would be a spiritual revolution; I don’t mean a specific religion but rather an individual spiritual awakening of sorts. Rebuke any sort of herd like mentality and encourage critical thinking. After that, with much hope and time, people will realize what truly is important. What follows after should be the forgoing of all frivolous expenses which will crumble many vain economies. I say this is a poor bet though, damn near impossible from happening to be honest; the people worship greed as their god that hides under many faces, and have done since the beginning. So I truly suggest that we no longer have kids at least we wouldn’t be dragging others down here to suffer.

By far most of the audience and the speaker herself are slaves. It is not 46 million people. It is somewhat closer to 6 billion. The wage workers are all slaves, the difference is the mechanism necessary to keep the slaves docile is that much more subtle in "developed countries". It surprises me how people complain when they think they are "slaves" for working for someone or a company. You have NO idea what real slavery is! I lived NEXT DOOR and watched my neighbors buy a little girl and use her for slavery: to take care of their children, to clean their house. They never once tried to educate her and they were BOTH teachers at the school we all lived at. The little girl was probably 7 or so, and her parents had sold her; why I don't know. I finally raised a fuss and she was released and probably bought by someone else. People you think are "decent" can be something else entirely. This little girl stays in my mind and taints everything I felt positive about this country I was living in. So quit claiming you are "slaves" when they are so many out there who cannot access education, decent food, clean water, and clothing. You have it easy. Grow up!

Most "essential" workers where people like grocery store employees who were paid minimum wage...the funny thing is, if the government though they were SOO essential how come they are not paid accordingly....yet these people showed up to work day in and out DURING A PANDEMIC and didnt even protest or nothing. You CANNOT do so, however, while losing site that it STILL exists and it STILL destroys lives and it’s STILL wrong. They keep unhealthy watch and attack innocent animals in many ways. One of them took the dog away in front of my eyes in his bike. His action was to harm somebody else . But instead he killed the dog. It's a war strategy where the enemy tortures innocent persons in front of their opponents. These are psychological tortures and we should stop it. I was exploited for 89 consecutive days including Saturdays & Sundays and later even got sued for a fabricated claim of A$700,000/- via technically confidential & legally binding commercial arbitration proceedings. I strongly believe it is a form of forced labour and modern slavery or slavery like practises in Australia, but the employer or principal contractor has issued me a threatening letter claiming to file defamation charges against me if I tried to report this matter to police. It is so strange how big bullies doing a US150 billion dollar illegal business of modern slavery are using “defamation” as shield to not to get report the matter to police and take it to public . Unfortunately, there are some bad law firms involved in devising such modern enslaving terms of employment and conditions of work.

The United States locks up more people per capita than any other nation. States count on Federal funding for state prisons and claim to use the money for mandatory programs that reduce recidivism. When actually they spend as little as they possibly can on those programs and launder the money elsewhere. The mandatory compliance insures the headcount required for federal funding of programs. "Lifetime probation" is mandatory for individuals classed in the lowest risk for recidivism. Ensuring those individuals are a long term source of income. The level of restrictions and requirements these individuals face is often detrimental to the success and mental health of the individual. Resulting in that individuals re incarceration. Sort of a rebranding of "assets" that still fund the state. Modern day slavery is also not easily seen as such in working class people or the poor.

The price of labour is determined by supply and demand, like everything else. The supply of unskilled labour is determined by birth rates. The people forced to do low paid jobs with dreadful working conditions, are mostly from countries that have failed to restrain their fertility as western countries have done. Why do the exploited men fear deportation if their conditions are so bad?
