  • Join Mr. Revealing as he shows you the progression of an oil burning / oil using consumption problem on his Toyota Prius. Watch as you see the span of 10,000 miles between oil changes, how the problem gets worse and a possible "noise" the car makes due to it. This is a 3rd Toyota Prius, so this effects 2010 - 2015 Gen 3 Prius and the 2016-2017 Prius V.
I want to hear from you and see if you are having this problem as well, and how bad is it for your Prius? Be sure to include your year in the comments. And let me know if have a theory as to the noise I describe and do get on the video!!
Please take a second and subscribe to the channel (it is free for you and it really helps me out!), click that "Thumbs Up" button and click the "Notification Bell" so you will be informed whenever I release a new reveal!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WATCHING!

You should clean the complete EGR-system (EGR-cooler, EGR-valve and the intakemanifold), replace the PCV-valve and install new spark plugs. And change the oil every 6-7000 miles, with a good quality oil
The reason the noise is there is that the small canals in the intake manifold are clogged with carbon. When accelerating gently the egr valve opens and lets exhaust gasses through, to your intake. Because of the clogging the amount of air for every cilinder is not even, which causes the rattle

For the metallic sound, it maybe an indication of LSPI, you can try with new API SP engine oil which may help. Secondly, the oil change interval need to be reduced to 5000 miles as I would suspect the piston rings maybe stuck. You can also try engine flush eveytime oil change took place to remove as much sludge in the engine as possible. Also add fuel additive from Redline to clean the intake valves, injectors and combustion chamber. I know Amsoil has twice amount of detergent within the oil which you may also considering. The stuck piston rings is mainly due to long oil change interval, I mean 10,000 miles oil change interval engines always end up bad. Only use synthetic oil not high mileage oil which contains high ZDDP which will poison the catalytic converter.

So listen up Prius owners: all the problems on Prius engines come from EGR clogging up and bad placement of PCV valve. PCV valve placement can be circumvented by installing a catch can sistem and reposition the PCV valve (there are videos on UA-cam). Installing a catch can sistem like that will do wonders for the EGR and intake manifold clogging and minimize oil consumption. If engines starts knocking on cold starts u will soon get the EGR engine light. A full cleaning of the EGR sistem and intake manifold ( maybe replacement of the EGR valve will be required) if u keep using the car with these issues the head gasket will fail.

The biggest mistake owners of all these 2010 to 2024 Toyota has been doing oil change intervals at 10k . I have always done my oil changes at every 5k miles . Since new, I always do the first oil change at 1k miles. FYI all 2012 to 2017 Prius V all have identical powertrain. I've always serviced the EGR, EGR cooler, full intake manifold cleaning and PVC cleaning. My 2010 Prius has 250k miles, zero oil consumption between oil changes. Biggest mistake with head gasket issue has been lack of warm ups ( I always let my Prius warm up a minute or 2 before driving off in the mornings( with the car in park, step on your accelerator once and engine will come on, engine will go into ev mode when it's warm), and people driving their Prius too hard going up the grades.

Not only Toyota. Any car, always have the problem with oil change at 10k intervals after 150k odometer (doesn’t matter how quality and fully synthetic oils). Please do an oil change at 5000k OR 6 months whichever come first so you will be safe for 400000 km easily

I'm debating running Amsoil through for an oil change or three to see if that helps clean up. Looks like best to order the gallon jugs online and join their program. Walmart has the 20K Mobile 1 jugs for a better price. I like the Toyota dealerships for filters if I'm doing myself. I'm at ~260K and maybe the last 15-20K I've been noticing. Time to change the PCV Valve and maybe clean the EGR circuit and Intake circuit. Might have the lower ring stuck too and maybe some sort of oil cleaner treatment alone might help... though wondering about using the Amsoil for a few to see if that alone helps. Thanks for sharing.

I've always had dealership do my oil changes for the most part... and I thought was no big deal they'd get up to half typically. Now that I've been having to top, I make certain is at the full mark when I do add or change from now on. Yes, same noise issue and that's a low oil indicator when starting up and makes more that cold weather second or so scary death like rattle. I notice mine makes that noise like you're describing more when the battery is low and seemed more when on hot days and running the AC as well... though might be related to low battery. I don't notice when my oil is topped off. Mine is a 2013 Prius 2.

I have a 2011 with 260k miles. Started burning oil around 220k. Just been topping it off. I had an 2007 honda accord that was burning oil as well and it was pretty. Much the same problem, stuck rings. On the accord forum they recommended auto-rx oil additive. It worked for for accord. 3 months ago I tried it on the prius. 1 bottle after oil change. It did NOT burn any oil during that cycle. In very cautious and don't easily believe in snake oils, specially for cars, but auto-rx worked.

That noise you hear and feel is probably pinging. Its caused by the lack of egr condition from the egr system clogging. Log into something prius related on a forum or facebook and figure out how to clean the egr system and replace the plugs and pcv valve. I bet you are very close to losing a head gasket.

The egr is prone to carbon clogging which can cause blown head gaskets.
    Costco has best gas
Along with shell, Texaco and chevron. Mobile one.
Hence the use of MMO and top tier gas with detergents.

    • @mr.revealing1455

Yes, I only use Costco and Mobil. The most important thing I hear about gas is to make sure it is "Top Tier" gas. If you google "Top Tier Gas" you will get a list of all the brands that have the Top Tier additives that help clean things out and keep them clean. Costco is the only wholesale club gas that is Top Tier.... Sam's Club and BJ's Wholesale Club gas stations are not Top Tier. We will talk more in future videos about the EGR and Head Gaskets!
