Yes I've been following up on that 340 demon for some time now very impressive car, of course it's not stock but it sure looks the part, kudos to those who made this car run as good as it does.
In 71 I bought a 69 340 swinger automatic for daily transportation. When I realized how much money I would have to spend on my 66 Nova “good car” to try and make it as fast as the Dart was stock, that’s when the General and I parted company. That 340 automatic was a street racers dream, 396 4 speed Chevelles would always take the bait.
And all you had to do to go even faster was drop into the Mopar parts department and spend five bucks on the Direct Connection catalog. They outlined exactly what to buy(from the factory no less) and how to install and tune it. Nice simple, easy to read instructions for 15, 14,13,12,etc second quarter miles, using factory engineered and tested parts. This allowed you to embarrass all GM offerings, with an A-bodied smallblock.....without even moving up to a big block or street sweeper, the Hemi. Should have been illegal Malcolm Ottawa Valley
Not surprised, both are monsters. But the power to weigh ratio, and let me tell ya those 340s highly underrated. Remember my dad telling me about beating 396 chevelles running his 340 dusters
I bought a 1970 340 six pack Challenger from Mr Norms in Chicago I raced everyday on the street until I took a trip to Cook County then move back to Iowa background my old stomping grounds race a lot of Chevys Fords and other Mopars didn't get outran often was never beaten by a Ford that 340 six pack 4-speed with 391 gears ran pretty good
Duster had the hole shot and the way it's geared, not to mention small blocks are rockets off the line, that car was smokin from the start. Love the Chevelle as well. Beautiful car!
Yeah them 340s are one of the biggest muscle car sleepers of all muscle cars. Crazy how many times I’ve seen 340s upset cars with motors significantly bigger
I wonder how many muscle car owners throughout history have chuckled as they pulled up to the starting line against a Duster with a 340. The number is roughly equal to those who became panicked and embarrassed as the Dusters walked away from them over the 1/4.
Man, that Duster! Was he hiding a rocket booster in there somewhere? Of course, those 340s are fierce. Chevelle put up some good numbers too. Great racing, as always, thank you! 🌮 🌮
The little engine that "did" 400 after 400 after 400, in overweight GM intermediates. Very few wanted a street race with a lighter weight 340 equipped Mopar A-body back when these were new. Malcolm Ottawa Valley
That Chevelle ran a very respectable time for what it is ,especially carting all that weight. Now about that little Demon Wow, whoever put that car together must have waved the "magic Mopar "wand over it. What a screamer. Quickest I've ever seen.
@@johndeeregreen4592 yes, I've been watching these videos for a while and have seen a few 340 A bodied run in the low 13's but this is the first one I have seen run mid 12's. Would love to see that motor on the dyno.
I agree, awesome. Both sweet machine's. I know '72 340 Mopar's are fast. My older brother bought a new 340 Duster in '72. That car ran strong. Another great race and congrat's to the owner's of these great car's. Both are winner's!
I had that same motor in my 66 SS. They are monsters on the street not so much on the strip. I was only 16 when I got it from my brother. It was a beauty.
@@sergeantmasson3669 This had everything. Quick ratio steering, Dana 60 12 bolt rear end, 4 speed, bench seat, with lots of low end torque. Beat anybody on the street. Joe Reath's head mechanic said put a 780 Holly with headers was all I should touch on it. It was a fine motor for what it was.
Extremely interesting comparision/race! Nice! What a incredible lightweight that 72 Demon is! But even in factory delivered form it was the winner on paper.
that was a good race. no real surprises but still fun. they both sounded great and had good times too. nice watching something a little different. thanks for the upload!
The following year, 1973, the Demon name was dropped and it became the 340 Dart Sport. I had a metallic brown one with white stripe that ran from the top of the front fenders and over the top of the roof above the back window. Also had a white quarter vinyl roof and white vinyl interior. Had a popular pkg called The Convertriple. Consisted of a crank open sunroof and a drop down back seat for extra cargo carrying. It was definitely a fun car to drive and that 340 was everything it claimed to be.
I had a 71 Demon. It was so cool. Equipped with the automatic left turn option instead of power steering. Just touch the brakes and turn loose of the steering wheel. I always wanted to upgrade and add automatic right turn option. Those were extremely rare.
Great show C&Z! Love that Chevelle with the overpowered rat motor especially , but I have a sweet spot for A-body mopars with small block V8's! Particularly the 70 - 71's because the 72 - 73 340's we're pretty smogged out by then and soon replaced with the 360! Thanks for sharing brother! ✌️👊
Goodday C & Z, That is one awesome Demon, I think that was the spec of your Chevelle. I thought the L 35 / 325 Hp was the base V8 Big Block in the Chevelle. Great looking Demon. Your number 1 Fan in Australia Louis Kats from Melbourne Australia ☺ 👍 ❤
A 12.74 stock (?) Demon. I know 340's are fast but that almost seems too quick. He certainly surprised the heck out of the Chevelle that was no slouch at 13.60.
Our host already admitted that the owner is not running the 1972 low compression pistons and that he'd upgraded to the higher compression of the earlier years. Also the 275 hp and stock torque was strictly for insurance purposes. The NHRA used to factor a stock high compression 340 in at 355 horsepower. A simple distributor recurve delivered another instant 25+ horsepower. The early and broad torque band of a 340 is unusual for a smallblock and another unexpected problem for the hefty Chevelle. Finally this class allows for the 4.56 gears, which with the torque of a 340, was the nail in the Chevelle's coffin. Malcolm Ottawa Valley
The gearing and the lighter weight of the Demon made the difference in this one. The 340s in the lighter Demons and Dusters, along with the Darts, were very formidable, although not much to look at, imo. Thanks C&Z.
Had a buddy back in the early 70's with a Black w/white stripe 71' Demon 3 speed on the column....called it the devil dog like the old Drakes cake....very fast.
MOPAR 340 engines were "giant killers." One of my neighbors had a "built" 396 Nova but he was never able to beat another neighbor's blue printed/balanced stock 340 Duster.
I'm glad I can at least go back and rewatch the older C&Z commentary before all the jorts wearing old people got mad and he decided to stop. Commentary is so bland now but I get it.
I owned a 72 Demon 340 with auto on the floor and 3:55 gears. My best ET was 14.5 @100 mph. My car was bone stock. There is NO WAY either one of those cars are anywhere near stock. Not even a HEMI car back in the day would do better than low 13 second quarter miles, especially with street tires and no headers. Whey they call these "stock" races is beyond me.
No way that Demon is even close stock to run in the 12s. To run a full second faster than stock You would have to modify the engine for at lest another 100 horsepower. A stock 71 Demon would run mid 14s maybe high 13s with slicks and that gearing might be possible. This from Motor Trend magazine in 1971 best of three runs came in at 14.49 at 98mph 1971 Dodge Demon (MT) 340ci/275hp, 4spd, 3.91, 0-60 - 6.5, 1/4 mile - 14.49 @ 98.25mph
The 340 Mopar's and GS or stage 1 Buick's Old's 442's,Firebirds and GTO's were the best early 70's high compression performing cars!!...I'd say the Duster,i'm a Chevy and Chevelle fan big time, but this 70 Chevelle aint nothing but a big Walrus,it's big and strong but too big for it's own good if that's just a 350hp 396!! Not too good in a Chevelle!!
That's somewhat true but the extra 600 pounds hurt it just as bad. I beat a SS396 with the better engine with a little 350 in my Corvette then a different one with my Fairlane. Chevelle's really need the monster 454 engine torque to get em going with all that weight. Don't get me wrong I love them and have always wanted one since my buddy had a 71 Malibu but they are just heavy for racing.
The Demon was already going to be a HELL of a car to beat. But with that gearing advantage too?!
Yes I've been following up on that 340 demon for some time now very impressive car, of course it's not stock but it sure looks the part, kudos to those who made this car run as good as it does.
