Belew is massively underrated as a guitarist, vocalist, and front man. He's obviously respected by those in the know, but man, so so so talented and electric.
@@Cfchild1 not at all!, adrian was asked by d.b. to go all out! he was also asked to become a full member of the talking heads. adrian declined because he was asked by some guy named fripp to start a band called discipline, the rest is history
When they hit 3:04, it just becomes the most beautiful musical fusion creation that ever was, with those interlocking hocket lines between Fripp and Tony, and then the bass lines on the stick.... it just comes together like a furious, powerful engine, but with the finesse and relentless precision of a Swiss watch.
I wish people showed Beat more love. Happy birthday Bill, your drumming influenced mine and many others. If it wasn't for your wonderful works, I wouldn't have picked up the sticks at all. 🍷
Man, what I wouldn't give to have seen this lineup live. Bill is widely regarded as the "best" prog-drummer for a reason. Tony is one of the most incredible bassist/chapman-stick players I know. Finally, Robert and Adrian are just the most amazing guitar duo I know - they complement each other so well. Love Adrian's funky and expressive style, the polymetric ostinatos they play, the gamelan-influences and Adrian's singing.
Not to make you feel bad, but I saw them--twice--once on the Discipline tour (No hi-hat!), then for Beat. They were club shows, so we worked our way into good spots on the floor, probably 6' from the stage, more or less in front of Belew. Pretty great.
It has to be mentioned how Bill innovated the use of electronic drums in the 80s. Up until that point they were not used in serious music but mainly in Pop bands and movies and TV soundtracks. Bill was one of the first drummers to use the Simmons Drums as a real musical instrument that helped change the use of these unique drums.
Wow. They're so talented, all of them. Love 80's Crimson era. I've just listened all three albums this months - Discipline, Beat and Three of a Perfect Pait and all of these are gold! I didn't expect this band will sound like that after Red and other albums.
They would have been mighty impressed, I can tell you that much, anybody from their generation who had heard this kind of music in their time, would have dropped their jaws
I've been a fan of King Crimson since 1973 when I saw then live, but this is (for me) The Best Line-up. They just "Play" and it is Joyful and ecstatic, yet all the while the rhythm section of Bill & Tony keep it totally nailed while Adrian and Robert just do what they do best!. Great song and a sublime performance. Thank-you for sharing this Bill.👏
Bill, out of all the "Signature" drummers, you transitioned through the 80's in such a unique way, utilizing the electric drums...It was so much fun to hear and experience...

Brilliant. This is such a clean copy; the one posted and taken down before not half as good. My favorite Crimson song ever. Everyone seems to be having a blast. And Bill looks about fifteen years old. Thank you for posting!
I just can't get enough of that guitar solo at the end. I just keep coming back to it. Neal and Jack and Me is perhaps KC song I come back to the most.
Mad brilliant counterpoint and poly-rhythms, on the road, what's not to love? And that slow bass bridge -- satori á UA-cam! Have some strange spaghetti and enjoy.
Played "Beat" when in the car in Orlando, FL. during my Navy Training Days. "Three of a Perfect Pair" followed in Ballston Spa, NY. "Discipline" was bought at Great Lakes, IL before the aforementioned albums. Oh, I have the vinyl from "The Court" to "USA" at home. This night wounds time
Bought myself that ep in 1983 and got addicted to N&J&me...still one of my all-time favourites, I adore the musicians and the way they interact live...pure energy. Love it, will do so forever ...thanky you KC
Happy Birthday Mr.B. - I foolishly suggested to the finest pianist on this planet (vkgoeswild) that I'd like to see the pair of you doing 'Nutrocker' on Nottingham Castle roof when it re-opens to the public soon. Unbelievably, she's up for the idea . . . do you fancy it? Lod : )
Brilliant KC! One of the best tracks from "Beat". What a fantastic band. Best of the 80s. Also Bill, thanks for "Gradually Going Tornado". Was listening to it, volume turned up, on the way to the golf course this morning, and on the way back.
god, what such demonstration of mastery and flawless technique. Beat is not between my favourite albums of KC but in live is other thing. I've always love the solos from Fripp in the las part that they are inspired from the albums that he made with Andy summers.
Its funny because i was thinking this whole song about how the police sounded at this time. The bands are different but something about the sound the singing and how it’s arranged too… its a lot more than a police song but i was feeling police influence…
I remember being introduced to the ‘80’s KC by a Prog Rock loving friend. It’s amazing because (to paraphrase) the more I heard it the more I liked it. The group of 4 people playing their instruments with such perfection was an absolute joy. One of my favorite concerts was on the Pier in NYC in 1984 where they played “3 fa Perfect Pair”. The 3 albums put out in the early 80’s were so inventive. They still stand up today as absolutely amazing works by 4 masters of their instruments. I went on to see the 6 man KC plus either saw or downloaded the ProJeKct(s). These men are just inexplicable. I am now looking forward to seeing BEAT. I can’t believe I’ve listened to Robert and. Company for so many wonderful years. Also as so many others have written, Belew is just a man with a talent from another galaxy….. that’s why he was able to play with Robert so well.
Thank you for sharing these archives, and, to the same degree, thank you for sharing these insightful and captivating annotations to them. Happy Birthday Bill and thank you for posting this video. Man I remember hearing this song on KROQ in LA back in the 80’s, driving on the 405 or the 101, and just feeling so alive. How is it that listening to it now can evoke those same feelings in my soul? Love to you Bill, Adrien, Tony, and Robert.
My favorite King Crimson tune is Asbury Park from the USA live album. Your drumming is so fluid and John Wetton's bass is amazing. And of course Fripp's guitar is like a laser. Astonishing track.
What was it about the 80’s that stands the test of time? Gentle Giant is still catching on. KC through it’s many incarnations has so many emotionally attached followers I think they’ll be forever strong in all our memories. Thanks to Bill and DGC! Wishing health and happiness and many more 🙏🏼
LOVE this band and all the players. Saw KC LIVE in NYC in the early 80's. Bill, you are a MASTER drummer and I have followed you thru your career in Yes, UK, King Crimson, Earthworks and anything I can find. Thank you for posting these vids. Keep on rockin!!
Adrian Belew is criminally underrated as a guitarist.
More than just a guitarist, he's an amazing frontman
@@maximilianodelrio agreed, he's just under-rated as an artist altogether
…and as a singer!
For some reason I always think he's the guy from Talking Heads
@@BroscoWankston he did a lot of good work with them especially on Remain in Light
Belew is massively underrated as a guitarist, vocalist, and front man. He's obviously respected by those in the know, but man, so so so talented and electric.
Check out the 1980 live performance in Italy of Talking Heads that featured Belew on guitar and vocals. I'll bet David Byrne felt a bit threatened 😁

Check him with Frank Zappa 😊
agreed. Love Belew
aquí en este tema el 95% de la guitarra es obra de Robert fripp
I couldn't play that guitar line let alone sing at the same time! Holy crap. You gotta be one of the cool kids to like this band. Hi cool kids! 😅

Adrián Belew is the greatest all rounder in modern music: guitarrista, vocalist, songwriter etc
This performance is pure musical bliss. Either you get it or you don't. 🙂
That nod fripp gives to belew towards the end of his guitar solo to start singing again 🤌
He slightly raised his eyebrows. Pure talent.
Oh, and Fripp's guitar parts in the coda are gorgeous.

Incredible how much Tony did for this song and Beat overall.
can we take a second to appreciate how well recorded this is for a live performance, this is some crazy stuff for 1982.
Tony Levin is incredible, he is like having an extra musician in the band with that Chapman Stick, just incredible!

The camera/editor focused exclusively on Bruford and Levin for the entirety of Adrian Belew's guitar solo .

Adrian and Robert were such a great fit. They could interchange guitar rolls throughout a song.
One of my all time fav Crimson albums. The change at 3:15 is pure magic.♥️
