- Having some SSB fun on the Brownings. Anyone that says Browning are crummy SSB rigs probably needs real communication tubes & a precision alignment, they are wonderful performing sets given their age. The biggest problem with tube rigs is the CHEAP ASS owners that don't know a good tube from a bad one. The junk from underneath yesteryear's tube-testers & TV repairman tube caddy's is the worst possible junk for communications use.
what amazes me is the fact that you talk to someone on the idiot band. an actual conversation! and polite too!
My dad bought this exact radio back in the 70's and spent many hours visiting with friends around the country he made. He passed away in 2008 and I still have the radio. It looks like the day he bought it. I wish I knew more about it to get it out and see if it still works.
I have a mk3 and use a jb76B and a 3 element beam..it cooks on am...i have a 6 pill going inline next.
I've got the Browning that my grandparents had. My grandfather would haul corn from Indiana to Kentucky and they'd be able to talk to each other no matter where he was on it. Seeing you hit Australia from California let's me know they could do it easily even though one was using a mobile.

Been talking on a browning mk3 and mk4a on ssb since the 80s. Every one says the suck on ssb but I beg to differ. They sound great on ssb. And receive great on ssb. Most radio guys are just too lazy to learn how to use one correctly. They get a bum rap on ssb cause you need a little bit of radio know how for them. Kinda like an auto transmission car and an automatic. Just laziness
I have been looking for one for a long time and finally found one like the one that my uncle had now I need to figure out how to hook it up

There are two different places for the antenna one on each the transmitter and the receiver on one with the plug that connects the receiver to the transmitter

Not anymore I used to. I won't work on anything I can't bring back to 100% perfection and due to the channel selector and aging crystal issues that's pretty much impossible to do on a D201. 73-Gregg s9radio
