Tractors descend on Parliament over 'betrayal' of British farmers

- A "go-slow" convoy of more than 120 tractors made its way around Westminster as campaigners demanded action on food security.
Farmers across the country are calling for an end to a number of post-Brexit trade deals, which they claim are allowing imports into the country that fall short of UK standards.

The problem there is much of what's labelled as British isn't. For example if chicken is imported from Kazakhstan then turned in to chicken nuggets in a factory in Britain it can then be labelled as British. Most people seeing that union flag logo on the packaging would then think it was a British chicken, raised, butchered and processed in Britain but it's not.

@@gramb0w5 the biggest cost to large businesses is their staff. Doubling their starting wage over the last 15 years has meant they have needed to up their prices otherwise they would go out of business. Thus putting people out of work.

@imbonkers3629 Over different things. Brexit has resulted in farmers having to compete with mega farms in Australia where food standards are lower and they have their economics of scale working in their favour.

Buy local change the habits of a lifetime, go to local markets, to get all your fresh produce Stuff with chemicals in go to suoermarkets. People survived nicely and were far healthier buying seasonal veg, and local meat for years, no one was sitting on couches then, ' Bacon and egg for breakfast meat and 2 veg for dinner, all natural good foods that can be obtained locally.

I lived in the lake district and other more affluent rural areas I could easily shop fresh and local but after moving back to my home town in greater Manchester to help with my parents as they get older there just isn't the same availability and it's become much harder and more expensive

@Vijayka... We know very well it was not the Indian farmers that were protesting but the land owners. Most Indian farmers rent the lanx from the landowners are for any paid increase its the landowner that pockets the money while the farmers stay poor. Not like the UK ehere farmers own their land.
I wonder if Indian farmers take all the human faeces littering the streets of India and use it as fertiliser. It is a well known fact that human faeces is an excellent fertiliser and India has plenty of it lying around.

Most farm shops don't even sell the produce they grow, most british farms are arable, or livestock producers. Farm shops will NEVER compete with the likes of Asda I'm afraid. Anyone who want's quality food, must get an allotment and grow organic produce!.@@Elaine-lpool

My wife and I went into Sainsbury's yesterday and they were selling 2kg bags of potatoes, carrots, swedes,savoy cabbage, and parsnips all for 15p a bag. Can any farm shop compete with that?.@@B-A-L

The Dutch government - part of the EU - made major efforts to destroy their own farmers.
Labelling Pork Products as British when they have been imported from abroad
and processed here was a common practise during the years that we were in the
EU so no protection there.

Next time I hope they bring 1,000 tractors and surround parliament whilst all the MPs are there. Well not quite, farmers all over the EU are protesting in an even bigger way than the British . Price squeezing and increased costs means profit per acre has fallen or disappeared . Small farms will have to sell their land to bigger agri businesses and probably sell the old farm house to a London millionaire
He speaks of not being able to sell pork because the consumer gets pork at a more affordable price from elsewhere. Does he buy his clothes from British producers? His car? His electronics? The answer will almost certainly be no. He is a hypocrite.
Besides, that is not food insecurity - that is insecurity for the farmers. There would be a thriving British farming sector if consumers either had more cash available or actually put their money where their mouths are. We either need to create growth - which British people are reluctant to support through automation and green tech, or spend more, but British people like to give farmers lip service and still buy cheaper imports.
As for conflating climate based policies with British farmers - if droughts, floods, habitat changes etc effect farmers outside of the UK, then we will really see food insecurity.
