A horizontally scrolling shoot-em-up in which a single player takes control of a hovership and must battle their way through an enemy-packed level; moving both above and below ground during the course of a level.
At various points the player will come across robot parts, either a torso or a pair of legs. Collecting these will eventually see the player's hovership become a towering robot, vastly increasing available firepower in the process.

I never even knew there was an arcade game until now. I had the NES game, which I found to be repetitive and unspectacular. But for this arcade game, like others have said, the parallax scrolling is very impressive for its time
Well, to be fair, a. the NES game literally only had about six months to be made, b. the FDS version of the game had to be made literally six months after the arcade game, as Nichibutsu, FCI, Pony Canyon, and Nintendo would all naturally work together to make the game for the Japanese market first, c. the NES/FDS both only had MMC1 chips to work with at the time, though MMC3 and MMC5 chips could have made it look, as well as act, closer to what the arcade game had looked like, d. there can only be a certain number of enemies/characters on the screen at a time on an NES/FDS, thus concessions need to be made in order to make a good FPS, as well as minimal amounts of flicker and slow down, and e. given the power of the FDS/NES, as well as the time constraints of the game, despite its lack of finesse and perfection, the FDS/NES versions of the Mag-Max game did the best job that they could do, more or less, at the time.
Me too!! I played it a lot on my Famicom! Was my first video game ever!
The parallax is so good on this for the time.
Used to play this in the arcade when I was a kid. Damn hard game.
Thanks for posting. I was trying to find this game for more than 10 years, never remembered the name couldn't really explain how it was so people could help me.
BTW, the perspective was really advanced for its time.
Trip down memory lane forgot this even existed.
Damn I finally found it...Thank you:)
This came out in 1985?! Looks pretty advanced for a game that old. Line scrolling AND portals? Underwater robot fish? Mind = blown.
I remember this game in arcades! It never seemed to work, but you could pump the coin return button for free tokens, so I guess it had its uses. :)
I am kinda wondering how they managed to pull off that neat parallax effect. This and Nihon Bussan’s own Seicross had such a cool parallax effect.
I used to be in love with the music from this arcade game.
Ditto - Another one of their's with a great soundtrack is Tube Panic.
The cowbell being worked into the name entry theme was an inspired touch.
Many thanks!
I had this game before, and I've been searching for years for the title of it since all I could remember was the gameplay.
Wow since 1987 see this great game !!!!!
I remember playing this on the nes nice game.
Other differences I know in NES version:
-Portals that travels between grounds have plain grey color
-Legs part just standing (not moving) until it's equipped on Ship
-Cannon has blue color and only becomes red if it's equipped on Torso
-Just before fighting the boss for second time (in automaton city), the background suddenly black-out until the boss is defeated, although the black-out doesn't really have much effect in underground.
If you think this is impressive, then look up "World Runner" for the NES. That game had very good graphics, good music, and awesome game play!! And it was in 3D!!! It was an obscure game for sure and it was one of my all-time favourite games for the NES!!
Muito bom! joguei muito esse jogo
I love this game
Genial!!!!
Super!!!!
Nichibutsu released some good games back then. Another one of their's with a great soundtrack is Tube Panic.
UNCLE RONNIEs 1985 HUDDERSFIELD ARCADE THIS BLEW MY SOCKS OFF BEEN. 13 YEARS OLD INSAIN 🔥🔥🔥
The game goes through the four levels and then loops over again. I don't believe it gets any harder.
was the arcade game available in the US? i know the nes version got a US port.
very cute
It does look more realistic compared to NES version.
I remember in the NES version, the boss on above ground has the same form as underground form and you're stopping while encountering the boss till it dies (end of Desert stage and before reaching Ocean stage).
the best part is when your little guy gets robot legs and they are always walking.
This is coming to the PS4 Digital Store in Japan
I remember 1st going into that hole thingy and laughing my ass of with my cousin because of the bgm
At least it sounds better than the shit B-Wings got on the arcade.
Never knew there was an Arcade of this game. I only knew the NES version
The game my childhood, thanks :) i made over 300.000
@phonic9000 back then the game was quite fun. I dont think there was an end to it. I think it kept going. Or I think you beat it then it started over a little bit harder. I cant reallly recall. The music I always thought was not all that great.
Have you tried "World Runner" for the NES? That was definitely a really fun game! And it was ahead of its time (IMO). Especially for a NES game.
Anal Leakage Simulator on Amiga was also way ahead of its time, look it up.
I like this over the NES version, though looking back, I feel that it's silly that we're defending the world with a fighter robot pushing a vacuum.
@OmarDelfinity definetly, too bad theres no port of the arcade version
go check the famicom port
I like the NES music better but the graphics in this 1985 arcade game are phenomenal.
Does this game have an ending, or does it go infinitely?
+reversalmushroom Nope, it goes forever.
What the... how the hell did they achieved that 3D looking background back then?!!!
Parallax effect
This is so superior to the C64 Version...
mini sail boats yayyy
B-Wings looks more better, there's some interchangeable weapons that come in a form of the ship's wings
Th...this was an arcade game??? :O
Its odd how the nes versions music is better than the arcade
Really? Looks so different from the amstrad conversion.
@KAPULINIX in 1986 ;)
I always thought this was Terra Cresta 3d. LOL
It *was* made by the same company.....
Gran juego donde podre encontrarlo
Quizá en mame
I WANT THIS GAME who has the machine or jamma board for sale?
well the nes version
well, it's definitely superior to the NES port - the arcade original has much more things going on at once
You can't compare true love against marshmallows my dude.
I MAKE MILLIONS AND MILLIONS ;)
I've been searching for an arcade game about a red, small car that jumps over buildings and collect bags of money, but I can't remember its name. :(
City Connection?
Pretty sure youi're thinking of Jump Bug (1981) - loved that game! Don't think it has ever had an official home release. Back in the day (gives age away...) we had to make do with rip-off versions of it, like Kosmic Kanga (ZX Spectrum)
@@blatherskite3009 Thank you, I found it with your help. I've been asking people about this game, but nobody knew it or nobody remembered it.
@@summerlaverdure it's jump bug (1981) thanks!
Here's what my wisecrack wasn't for the person who's playing this game: do you have to lose every body part and your defense weapon, when your enemies too easily fefeat you? Are you also losing on purpose? 📉 😳 😕 😐 🤔 😏 📉
