  • I didn't say "Apple Jack" a single time in this video. Shows you how important she is to this film...
"My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" was and still is one of the most influential cartoons of all time, so it's only natural that it got a big theatrical movie released in 2017.
But despite all the hype and excitement surrounding this film, does this movie really live up to the expectations? That is what I aim to examine in this video as I overview and critique "My Little Pony: The Movie."

I went to theaters to watch this movie. I was so hyped for it, I was like 15 at the time and my aunt brought their 6 year old to watch it with us. It was only us in the theater, the 6 year old got bored during the movie and wasn’t even paying attention to it. I was so disappointed, I usually watch MLP movies mainly for the music if anything. MLP always has fire songs but not a single song was worth listening too, maybe open your eyes but still not great. I didn’t like the villain, I didn’t like them adding all these new species we hadn’t seen in the show for this movie. But goddamn that animation was beautiful, I’d recommend just watching this movie without sound and just looking at the animation, it would be best that way.

I totally forgot the majority of this movie and yeah twilight in this movie is terrible. It’s like they are doing the bare minimum of the show, showing each of their traits but not actually using them properly. They are just another step in the show. Like rarity giving buttons to the cat guy. It just feels so unfocused and badly written. The show isn’t like that at all. I really love the and the lessons it teaches. It’s not as one note as this movie makes it out to be. I haven’t totally caught up to MLP and haven’t finished it but I’ve watched the majority, and I highly recommend it.

Personally, I do like the songs while the animation was a little off-putting (with the contrast between the cute characters and the grim backgrounds). But almost everything else I agree with.
Also, I actually have watched more MLP episodes since I released this video and I can confirm that this show is actually pretty decent, more than this movie portrays it as. It’s unfortunate that this epic accumulation of everything from the show ultimately resulted in something kinda bland and off-putting, but whatcha gonna do?

This movie wasn't the best or worst, but at least it made for solid evidence that the medium of traditional hand drawn animation is NOT dead, though if you want better 2D animated films from 2017 than this, I recommend Cartoon Saloon's adaptation of The Breadwinner and The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales.

The animation is definitely better than the series, but it’s strange to me that the main ponies almost look MORE cute and chibi than they do in the show. This sticks out more in comparison to all the more grim and rugged new characters. It’s a bit off-putting, but not terrible.
