    My dad worked on F100 and retired as an Eagle Keeper with the 159th. Back then they where called the " COONASS MILITIA". When they had the F4 Phantoms Coonass Militia was painted on the leading edge of the rudder. You can find pictures of the Phantoms intercepting T95 bomber with the inscription.

    Nice videos of the Eagles. I live down the road from RAF Lakenheath in the U.K. where 2 squadrons of F15E and 2 squadrons of F35A are based. I get to see, but mostly hear, the fighters in operation daily.

    Nice shots, looks like one had to declare an emergency and RTB, glad he made it. Wonder if it could have been a bird strike ?
    The 159th is one of the very few wings that use a "vanity" tailcode, that refers neither to a base or a state. It is actually just short for JAZZ, in homage to New Orleans musical roots. OZ, on the tails of bombers from Kansas, is another example, andmeans just that - Homage to the Wizard of Oz. One that mystifies everyone is the ZZ that has been the tail code for fighters from Kadena Okinawa for decades.

    • @Darknamja
      @Darknamja 8 місяців тому +3

      The ZZ tailcode's origins date after the Korean War and have nothing to do with combat performance. In 1968, the Pacific Air Forces assigned a randomly generated letter to each of its 24 wings. The 18th Wing received "Z."
      Each flying squadron was assigned another randomly generated letter. The two letters were then combined and painted on the squadrons' respective aircraft. Within the 18th Wing, there was: "ZA" for the 12th Tactical Fighter Squadron; "ZG" for the 67th Tactical Fighter Squadron; "ZL" for the 44th Tactical Fighter Squadron; and "ZZ" for the 15th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron.
      By 1972, the Air Force reorganized the tailcode system and began to assign two-letter codes to each wing. The 18th Wing would have received "KA" for Kadena during this renaming, but the abbreviation was already in use by the 457th Tactical Airlift Wing in Vietnam. As an alternative, 18th Wing officials and the Pacific Air Forces commander requested the 15th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron's popular "ZZ" markings for the entire wing. In 1975, the 18th Wing officially received its ZZ tailcode designation.

      Great Information! As an AF Vet I can normally tell home base of aircraft based on the Tail ID and was immediately dupped by the JZ... Obviously, they are from Louisiana but why the JZ? Cant wait for that to show up as some trivia question!

    So - as long as these fighter planes were around, Puerto Rico had some air defense. Right now, we have none - someone either in Congress or the DoD saw to it that the Puerto Rico Air National Guard be stripped off any air-to-air capability. PRANG aviation is now reduced to air transport, a fact the enemies of the US probably know well.

    • @poorwotan
      @poorwotan 7 місяців тому

      Well, the fact that the Corsairs were blown up probably didn't help in securing other fighters I guess...

      @@poorwotan Unfortunately, true. If any of the terrorists who actually destroyed those planes or planned it is still around, I guess they are quite glad Puerto Rico has been left without any immediate air defense.
