Steve Coogan 'despairs' of Keir Starmer's approach to being PM | LBC

- Опубліковано 8 лют 2025
- Andrew Marr talks to actor and comedian Steve Coogan, who gives his insight on what he thinks of the current government.
Coogan, a Labour supporter, admits he's frustrated with Starmer’s overly cautious, play-it-safe approach.
He believes his “please everyone” strategy might work for now, but that it’s bound to backfire eventually.
Coogan also addresses Prince Harry's monumental victory' against News Group Newspapers, stressing that 'it's the end of the beginning... not the beginning of the end.'

Great interview. Not my words, the words of Shakin' Stevens.
Lovely stuff.
Don't get it.
@@chatham43 you stand corrected, said the man with the orthopaedic shoes
Needless to say, I had the last laugh.
@@Muskateeringyeah well _you_ could end some of your chapters with ‘Needles to say, I did drugs’
Trust me Steve, Starmer isn't trying to please all people all of the time. Far from it. It would seem to me that his machine like, ideological approach to politics doesn't strike me as someone who loses much sleep over people disliking him.
He is definitely pleasing the Israeli lobby.
@daverunkie9853 I agree with you there
@daverunkie9853 Glad to hear it - makes a change from your atypical Labour politician .
He shouldn't be pleasing all the people etc, anyway. The black hole is real, covid cost us far more than they want to admit to us, they said they'd take difficult decisions and they actually have (unlike most governments who want to remain popular/populist). Let's see where we are in 4 years Vs Trump's America...
Hear hear. Not sure what SC is getting at there. Seems to me Starmer should worry more about not giving people a bigger vision for prosperity that they can believe in, as they are taking hits here and there in the short term.
Sail away sail away sail away
Honest, I'm not Enya
Don't think starmers pleasing any of the people any of the time?
Son of a toolmaker Starmer could be an extra in the walking dead he's that monodron
Son of a toolmaker … no suprise, is a tool 😂
yep that's it, because being charismatic is important right? BoJo is charismatic. Look how that turned out.
Steve looking disturbingly like Peter Mandelson here... could he be prepping for a TV special on Peter's relationship with the lovely Jeffrey Epstein?
That's what I thought. Disgustingly similar.
Years ago, when asked if he would rather discuss British politics in Westminster or Davos, without hesitation, he said Davos. Shows what he thinks of democracy and British tradition.
Why do we have a pm, affiliates, and a king who think it's acceptable to discuss our country with a bunch of unelected elites? If it's not acceptable for Musk to get involved in our politics, it should work the same way with Klaus Schwab and Co. 2 tier yet again.
Probably because no decisions get made in the House of Commons. Just a bunch of posh private schoolboys jeering at each other for clout.
Bravo. Well said.
The irony of these two lamenting the fact that politicians seem unable to give a straight answer to a straight question while Coogan waffles endlessly about his background instead of stating forthrightly what it was he was brought up to believe (Irish republicanism). Also wittering on about being of ‘Judeo-Christian Labour’ 🤷♂️ while our erstwhile journalist of weight and integrity fails utterly to get that elusive straight answer.
Starmer's a total dud.
Starmer is effectively a right wing liberal, him and his like are currently accupying the workers' party
Back to the competent Tories then?

more like 1984.

….and the third world.. does anyone know who invented the skip?
Steve is looking more like Stan Laurel everyday.
And I bet you're Brad Pitt right?
As a former employee of the coal industry in the 70’s through to the early 90’s, I knew what Thatcher stood for and her revengeful instinct against the miners. I haven’t got any real idea of where Starmer is heading.
Minor tweaks which centrists will claim are radical changes. Starmer is pure establishment
what does it matter what an ex-comic thinks? Alan's opinion is no more or less important than any other.
Coogan is criticising Starmer, by BEING DRESSED MORE STARMER THAN STARMER, HIS OUTFIT, HIS HAIR SCREAMS STARMER. Very interesting look for the interview.
Labour backbenchers will depose starmer and the cabinet, even they can’t take this madness
I’m not so sure (sadly). Blair and Brown’s Labour had some proper heavyweights. This lot? Lightweights all - without him they’re lost - and that’s saying something.
Lefty luvvie interviews lefty luvvie promoting a programme which throws stones at a former right wing leader. You can almost sense them moistening as the interview continues….
When Brian Walden said, "Let me put it to you....," politicians quaked in their boots.
It’s socialism, he’s just rebadged it you fool.
Steve lost my respect when he denigrated the University of Leicester re: the RIII find in favour of that awful Philippa woman.
Steve Cogan should stick to acting. He’s not a politician
Correct. He's not a politician. He's promoting something he's acted in.

Starmer out 🇬🇧
Coogan loves the word 'esoteric'.
The UK is broke. Spending needs to be cut at least 30%, time limits need to be introduced on claiming welfare. Many thousand of Civil Servant's need sacking. Public staff pensions need to be the same as the rest of us, why should we pay tax for their pensions which are much better than ours. 50% MPs need to be sacked and at least 50% of the House of Lords. All Foreign Aid needs to stop. Then cut taxes for business and encourage real inward investment which will never happen with high taxes. We will then start to get some real growth. The average Brit is over 40% poorer than the average American, the system over the last 30 years has failed, time for big changes...
Starmer reminds me of the Monty Python vocational guidance councillor sketch. The Chartered accountant who wants to be Lion Tamer.
Steve is very awkward and nervous when not in character...lovely stuff..mega.
This guy can see what is coming and going back on all the hard left woke nonsense he has spent years supporting…. We haven’t forgot Steve.
Steve Coogan can not answer the question on Starmer as he is not at all affected by his policies
I thought this was Peter Mandelson, not Steve Coogan.
We certainly won't be seeing any future programmes of this nature with Starmer, Sunak,Johnson, Cameron etc.!
Old Coogan has a self-pity party in his little tank top😂

Steve Coogan.... Phenomenal comedian and entertainer. Total Pratt as a human being. Tired, clichéd, out of touch millionaire lefty.
Goodness me, Coogan looks profoundly ill at ease here - I guess he's either being hunted down by his inner demons or he's desperate to get to the toilet!
It's not even working in the short term
Starmer and his cronies couldn’t organise a two man raffle.
I don’t think they want to? Organising a Government and being in charge of Britain? Yes. A lot harder than organising a raffle don’t you think? Got any more insightful gems? 😂

Really 🤔 Starmer is upsetting nearly all the people all the time 👎🏻 the worst PM in living memory.
Nah mot yet , but heading that way certainly
We have to change the system so people like Starmer could have been SACKED by the PEOPLE in WEEK ONE.
He’s helped those that are struggling.
Problem is those that are struggling have the smallest voice.
Funnily enough, like always, the people with money shout loudest.
But you won’t sway people by trying to gaslight them, truss lasted a month and crashed the economy. Bojo danced when our grandparents were dying.

Coogan talks a load of BS , he's so far up his own backside it's not true .
I disagree; Coogan's political opinions and interventions seem pretty public-spirited to me.
Come on 5 tory deadbeats and your calling starmer its pathetic thatchers legacy has destroyed this country
You realise thatcher was elected because socialist trade unions literally had this country on its knees right? Compare Britain in 1979 with Britain in 1990, the difference is night and day
For gods sake move on i was a labour supporter in the eighties even helped the minors during the strikes by raising money but I look back now and thatcher was the best thing that happened to Britain and now the labour government has left the working people behind and I couldn't support any longer
@shaunbanner6774 While I agree that Labour has lost sight of its original mission… You really think Thatcher’s policies have panned out well for the nation?
-Never replenished council housing stocks after bringing in right to buy, which has directly led to the housing crisis we have today
- Privatised everything which has led to us haemorrhaging resources into dysfunctional infrastructure
- Left areas of the country that were built on mining industry to rot in the wake of the closures, many of which are now the poorest regions in the country, with shorter life expectancy for the lucky inhabitants & obscene unemployment levels...
Best thing to happen to the country? Really? Okay she defended the Falklands but let’s be real here… Thatcher decided to fight because she needed a distraction.
Blair's legacy more like
@shaunbanner6774no she wasn’t.
Short termism, she sold everything off for a quick buck. These things takes decades to manifest and here we are:
Most expensive train tickets
Terrible water quality at its most expensive
Energy bills uncontrollable
House prices unfeasiable
We were told by maggie capitalism would solve all of this as investors would invest, turns out they just wanted the profits. Who could have guessed that
Harry settled because he knew he would lose, it is over, he got his apology and his money, it was a civil case.
I recall the Walden interviews with Thatcher. He gave her an easy ride and only switched tack when he realised she was on borrowed time in the last one.
I understand that you’re stuck between a rock and a hard place when it could cost you money against Murdoch, but can’t these people club together as they all have a common objective.
Steve let me help you there not fit for Purpose here, he’s not decent he’s corrupt self-indulgent
Which onky goes to show that Blue Labourites and Red Tories (the one nation to some degree), are on the same page, and neither are served by the current lot of politicians. It’s a funny old world
I have a great idea. Let's ditch the technocrat, and bring in an ideological left-winger who our heart can vibe with. There's nothing in our recent history to imply that such an approach would fail.
Dan!
Not heard anything of the 22 billion black hole for a while, must have doubled by now much like the illegal population😮
Isn't he pleasing none of the people any of the time?. 🤔🙄😒😬.......
He’s not the only one, that smarmy guy makes my skin crawl, he’s simply a wolf in sheep’s clothing! We do not see anything like the real man or his real character!
Alan Partridge, the PM we need now.
🤣
Coogan is poor as Walden. Harriet Walter does a better job as Thatcher, but is too old for the part.
DAN.. DAN…….DAN
Peeling the onion with Alan Partridge.
Step away from the thesaurus....
Funny LBC lead with that headline and not the corruption and illegality of Murdoch etc
I am like Steve always been a labour supporter and had the same dislike of Thatcher. While Keir is dull and not that likeable I feel we maybe need that after Boris/ Truss/Rishi. The old adage of "only time will tell" is what really counts lets see how well he's doing 2 years in. I'm not sure Kemi has much longevity either😂 . Modern politicians just have no gravitas.
Brian Walden miss him
By play it safe you mean "raise taxes exclusively on the working age folk to fund continued Triple Lock".
The vast majority of people will rely heavily on the state pension when they retire, as probably will you, pensions in small private sector companies will be nowhere near enough to live on, its vital the triple lock is maintained, the UK state pension is still one of the lowest in Europe.
@@johnfitchie9892 I would end up with a larger pension if I could opt out of my monthly £150 NI payments and put them into my SIPP instead which increases by 10% a year on average.

Love Steve but too easy to criticize Starmer - the country is in terrible economic shape (thank you, Tories!) and he needs to go slow - look at the way people went mental over the fuel allowances - it's not even that much money - the country is not in the mood for conviction-style leadership style - and consider the Right wing backlash waiting in the wings. Does anybody in the middle want a bunch of Right wing reactionaries running things even further into the ground? Then get behind the government.
