  • Andrew Marr talks to actor and comedian Steve Coogan, who gives his insight on what he thinks of the current government.
Coogan, a Labour supporter, admits he's frustrated with Starmer’s overly cautious, play-it-safe approach.
He believes his “please everyone” strategy might work for now, but that it’s bound to backfire eventually.
Coogan also addresses Prince Harry's monumental victory' against News Group Newspapers, stressing that 'it's the end of the beginning... not the beginning of the end.'

Trust me Steve, Starmer isn't trying to please all people all of the time. Far from it. It would seem to me that his machine like, ideological approach to politics doesn't strike me as someone who loses much sleep over people disliking him.

He shouldn't be pleasing all the people etc, anyway. The black hole is real, covid cost us far more than they want to admit to us, they said they'd take difficult decisions and they actually have (unlike most governments who want to remain popular/populist). Let's see where we are in 4 years Vs Trump's America...

Years ago, when asked if he would rather discuss British politics in Westminster or Davos, without hesitation, he said Davos. Shows what he thinks of democracy and British tradition.
Why do we have a pm, affiliates, and a king who think it's acceptable to discuss our country with a bunch of unelected elites? If it's not acceptable for Musk to get involved in our politics, it should work the same way with Klaus Schwab and Co. 2 tier yet again.

The irony of these two lamenting the fact that politicians seem unable to give a straight answer to a straight question while Coogan waffles endlessly about his background instead of stating forthrightly what it was he was brought up to believe (Irish republicanism). Also wittering on about being of ‘Judeo-Christian Labour’ 🤷‍♂️ while our erstwhile journalist of weight and integrity fails utterly to get that elusive straight answer.

The UK is broke. Spending needs to be cut at least 30%, time limits need to be introduced on claiming welfare. Many thousand of Civil Servant's need sacking. Public staff pensions need to be the same as the rest of us, why should we pay tax for their pensions which are much better than ours. 50% MPs need to be sacked and at least 50% of the House of Lords. All Foreign Aid needs to stop. Then cut taxes for business and encourage real inward investment which will never happen with high taxes. We will then start to get some real growth. The average Brit is over 40% poorer than the average American, the system over the last 30 years has failed, time for big changes...

      - Privatised everything which has led to us haemorrhaging resources into dysfunctional infrastructure
      - Left areas of the country that were built on mining industry to rot in the wake of the closures, many of which are now the poorest regions in the country, with shorter life expectancy for the lucky inhabitants & obscene unemployment levels...

such a pity we don't have a journalist of walden's courage now to ask freegear a few question, e.g. his role in the decision not to prosecute saville, or why he fled the scene of a road traffic accident before the police could arrive with their breathalysers, or even, has freegear ever had private medical insurance
one things for sure, the like's of keunnsberg will never step up to the plate

Love Steve but too easy to criticize Starmer - the country is in terrible economic shape (thank you, Tories!) and he needs to go slow - look at the way people went mental over the fuel allowances - it's not even that much money - the country is not in the mood for conviction-style leadership style - and consider the Right wing backlash waiting in the wings. Does anybody in the middle want a bunch of Right wing reactionaries running things even further into the ground? Then get behind the government.
