History is repeating itself - a Moffat episode during RTD’s run is the best.

Moffat definitely excels at his one-off stories in my opinion, rather than the series plot thread.

Honestly it was a great episode, this makes me intrigued to see his next episode at Christmas

I love how much Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor sings so far. I think it's great having a Doctor who likes a song and dance.

      He's working late cos he's a singer

Made me think Ncuti could easily do some of the classic New Who episodes. It'd be different of course, cos different actors, but it would be watchable. I can totally see Ncuti doing the "Would you do it" scene with Davros from Genesis. We still need to get a dark Doctor rant like we got from most Doctors so Ncuti gets his "Doctor moment" but I'm sure RTD has that organised

Felt like Inside Man in that the situation kept getting worse and worse and more stressful and you're thinking "how on earth can they recover this"...and then the situation gets even worse, I love that

The acting and directing were the best aspects of the episode for me. Loved Ncuti’s acting when he was looking scared and I loved the interactions between the Doctor and Ruby. Story is a little generic but enjoyable cos it was successfully intense. Definitely best one so far.

This felt like an episode of Doctor Who , best episode of this second RTD era, much like his stories were the best of the first one. Steven Moffat really gets to the heart of what embodiesThe Doctor. The great dialogue here makes the first two episodes look even weaker. Pat Troughton's second Doctor plays the Skye Boat song, a soldiers lament after the battle of culloden, on his recorder in the Web of Fear, and Chris Chibnall called back to that in The Power of the Doctor, it's the tune the Master plays when in possession of the Doctors regeneration.

The new companion appearance was a one off originally. It was explained in the Boom Unleashed episode

Loved the tension, felt like Doctor Who had truly returned.

Overall really enjoyed the episode. However I’m never really a fan of Doctor Who episodes feeling the need to explain what the subtext is. I particularly didn’t like the Doctor’s rather demeaning comments about people of faith, particularly as it goes against sentiments we’ve seen from the Doctor before. I still would say this is by far the best 15th Doctor episode but for me it isn’t quite up there with Moffat’s best.

Yes, that's a good point, and I've seen other people say the same. It did seem jarring, especially when you compare it to the Thirteenth Doctor's comments about faith in Series 11 (saying "keep your faith" to the Ux, for example).

The doctor flips it round at the end though, when he's talking to the girl who has lost her father. Reminded me of Kurt Vonnegut's paradoxical takes on religion.

And to add, the hardness the Doctor has towards faith earlier in the episode adds emotional weight to his later comments "I don't like it but I need it"

@@dogblessamerica but I would argue even saying he doesn’t like it goes against what the Doctor has said before.

Richard, thanks for such a great review of such a brilliant episode. So refreshing after 6 episodes of RTD.

This episode was much better than the previous two but I've got to be honest, I saw a lot of issues.
Why do the soldiers walk over a mine field that they made themselves?
How did the girl not realise that her dad was a hologram?
Ruby doesn't question anything after almost dying and both her and the doctor don't even look effected after what's just happened.
Defantly a step forward but still quite far from where it needs to be in my opinion but I will say ncuti and millies acting were on full in this episode
