The straps go all the way through and out the buckles. So you can open it all the way. You may have to mess with it a little bit to get it to go all the way through.

Keep working with the straps… they do come out. If you want to fold them out on the side, I guess you can, but they simply feed back through the buckle.
Also, you pronounce it exPLOIT (like the verb), and I pronounce it EXploit (like the noun). I don’t know which one is “right,” but there you are.
