  • Hey all you home menders! Rotted wood everywhere!. Dustin shows us how to replace a wood window sill. Remove the old sill and install new sill and sill nose. Available in vinyl too, never have to replace a window sill again. This old wood window just had some years added to its life. You can do it!

    Thanks man. I've been scouring the internet trying to find an image of how the two pieces join together. I thought the slight drop was right, but the previous install had the two pieces flush with each other. It was done back in 2016 and the whole sill already rotted out again, so I think the way they nailed it together was catching water. We've had a lot of wet years in NC during that time so that must be why it got destroyed so quick. Anyway, I'm gonna go nail that nose piece on now and get to caulking and painting.

    Hey, Home Mender. I have an old farm house where either the sill and/or the nose is rotted. Curiously, nose sits below the sill and is separate from it. On some of these windows the sill has nails going down into, what I assume, is the nose. Do you have any idea how these type of window noses would generally be attached?

    • @homemend
      @homemend  25 днів тому

      That’s a good question Scott. If it’s an old house, it could possibly be one piece. I have run into it like that and really the only way is to cut them out like I did in this video and replace them with the cell and nose style.

      Hey tungsten. The double sale will definitely be a challenge but most times you don’t need to cut the sill in one piece you can do two separate sills and then one long nose across the front. You got this!

    Hello, so I replaced an old bathroom window with a new vinyl window. The old window sill had to be replaced also, but the problem I have run into is the sill is slightly angled, or tilted out, as was the bottom of the ole window, but the new window has a flat bottom window frame. Any solutions for that?

    • @homemend
      @homemend  2 роки тому

      Hey Raymond yes sir. You may try building the area up with wood to help secure the new window and definitely insulate it. Then you would need to modify the trim on the outside to trim it out as needed.. Does this make sense question ? Check out the mighty network you can upload photos if needed

      So I replaced the window I was kind of second on the job as there was a primary person hired to do the work. The instal went beautifully. He did one thing I don't think I would have done we needed more space in the existing still. He chiseled it by hand where I would have just taken a rotary tool and a straight edge and cut it out that way but I couldn't believe how beautiful his chiseling was. it's a shame to even cover it with the window when we were all done. And after caulk and paint, it looked beautiful.

    What caused the rot in the first place? Will the problem just come back?

    • @homemend
      @homemend  Рік тому

      Hi John. This was probably the original window sill from the house… Possibly 75+ years old. The reason wood rots out is because it’s not protected. Homeowners with wood trim should have it painted and recaulked every few years. Maybe more in problem , prone to water areas. I hope this helps

      Hey WW. Sometimes they do install vinyl windows over top of wood that later needs to be replaced. Ideally, you would want to remove the window, but if it’s all metal wrapped and pretty, I would try to rebuild it with the window in place think of it more as surgery… I hope this helps.
