"I don't understand him... I don't know what the hell he's talking about... But I love him"
And I love his acceptance of something he doesn't quite understand.

Is anybody else here because "Where The Wild Things Are" was a staple of their childhood, and now want to write themselves? I couldn't believe that the book was actually authored. I assumed that it just produced itself, miraculously, for the benefit of children.

I don’t remember but my mother says I loved it. I’m here because of the film and I want to be a filmmaker. It’s funny he says “go to hell” in this because both he and Spike Jonze shared a vision for the film adaptation that was “scary and too dark or adult” for children according to executives. “Go to hell” was his response, and Spike Jonze said he wasn’t making a children’s film but a film about childhood.

William Blake was a wonderful artist and a great poet. Sendak was one of the greatest illustrators of childrens books, falling short of only Arthur Rackham in my estimation. I’m sorry he suffered so much-Blake can be reached only through his art and his poetry-but Sendak brought great joy to many millions, and his was a life well lived!

Nowadays, children have access to all sorts of entertainment. They watch various cartoons and listen to audio storybooks. It would be splendid if we came back to the roots: sit with a book and a cup of hot chocolate in front of a fireplace. Touch the faded paper and feel its smell... Then read the book to our little niece or nephew and see their smile while we act our roles. With no doubt he is a very talented illustrator and a colourful figure.

Honestly, my feelings about art and Maurice has become more intellectual, as I realize his work. HIs Illustrations In the Night Kitchen, Where the WIld Things Are, Brundibar and Outside Over There, have made me feel more comfortable about the direction of where my artwork may take me. These videos are gifts to learn by, a place to understand the values of history, art history and immagination.I had shed a few tears at first, and sharing his life in his home has brought me closer to this feeling.

I don't remember liking Where The Wild Things Are as a kid. Probably because I thought it was dark and scary. But I love it now. I appreciate the art and the story so much more! I thought--for a little while--what a shame it is that I didn't like his work more as a child! But what is a children's book anyway? He said he never wrote a children's book. So there must not be an age limit on art. I wonder why I was afraid of so much beauty when I was a child.

In a way, he answered his own question, "
how do you set out to write a children's book?" (1:23) at 3:14:
    "I just lived in Brooklyn
where everything was ordinary, and yet
    enticing and exciting and bewildering.
The magic of childhood, is the strangeness of childhood.
The uniqueness that makes us see things that other people don’t see."
He tapped into the ability for children's imaginations and curiosity to embellish and expand the extraordinary nature of the world, no matter how banal it may sometimes seem to others.

He was extreme and a bit rude in some interviews. He was quite bitter, I noticed. His stories didn't end badly but at the same time he didn't write typical "happy stories." They were quite dark, most of them. In one of them there is a man pointing a gun at the child. This book wouldn't be published today. And writing sequels is not easy, and it wouldn't be to write a sequel to such a book. I think he did well to refuse. I only wish he used this style of illustrating for other books, but that was his right to do what he wanted to do.
