If a siren goes off while walking to a forest I'm turning around lol.
I've seen a flight attendant, talking about any siren that she may hear in the plane, and the comment thread in it complain that the flight attendant will have the context for it. While this is true, these guys are a bit brain dead for not realizing that if you hear a siren, no matter what it is about, that if it is really fuckin loud, you get the fuck out. Like, fuck the context. Even if the siren wasn't directed towards me or anyone down there, hearing something so loud would make me leave fast. It really doesn't take that much common sense to know when you have to fucking leave an area. But apparently, for some people, they still need more than 2 brain cells for that..
My paranoid ass would think of Siren Head and freak out
Common sense, it's gotta be common enough for it to be common sense. First off plenty enough ppl don't actually like hiking in forest vibes, plenty. How r u supposed to know what u don't. I'd assume cops should bc maybe the patrol those areas from time to time. But bug a "city folk" as the "country folk" into going to be 1 w/ nature. Ur not gonna know how to take sirens. Question it at most but you're still not gonna know. Till ur buddy that knows better... Tells u. I hear sirens, I just think of clubs & hip hop music. In nature, no, I don't think a party will break out. But until now, I wouldve have not known what a siren meant out in nature. Still not gonna go walking into a horror movie anytime soon tho. But I once did swim in a idek what u call em. A quarry. I'm still ok. @@skaynne54

I was friends with Rachael. She was a model student, friend and person. She was a prefect, and was both intelligent and very athletic.Truly one of the nicest and most beautiful people I knew, inside and out. And yes she died attempting to rescue her friend. She was only 21 and had so much promise for her future. Her funeral filled out a hall with over 100 people who attended. I can't believe this local story has made it to this channel all these years later. Rip Rachael ❤

*TIP: Big Sirens, such as air raid sirens can go off once per day as a test that they always work. If you hear one single siren go off and then nothing, its probably nothing.*
*If you here it go off more then once, or it just keeps going, then its always something real. Prolonged siren or repeating sirens always mean real danger!*
Sirens exist for a reason, dont take them for granted.
A quick guide (i used to be really interested in sirens, please correct me):
~20 seconds: probably a test, but keep listening
~1+ minutes solid tone (excluding wind up and down): alert, used for natural disasters and other things of similar nature
~1+ minutes of wavering pitch: ATTACK: used for extreme disaster warning, and fire.
30s--2 minutes of a HARSH alternating pitch(hi-lo): mostly used for fires.
Harsh Pulsing sound: just exists, doesnt really mean anything to my knowledge
Don't count on it. A storm or war action can knock out a siren. Know why it goes dead!
@@johnchestnut5340 I believe if such thing would happen, then it will definitely be obvious.
@leoleo1035 You clearly haven't been in such storms. It is rare. But it happens. There are also false alarms when the wind throws around small objects tricking the automation . Again rare, but it happens.
in a modern world: if you hear a siren and are not sure what that means consider improving your safety situation (get out of obvious danger zones) and give google a go as to what that siren means
The fact that she does trying to save her friend is truly a way to go. RIP hero. 🕊️

I used to be a flight attendant for 6 years. Any siren, or alarm or loud sound inside the aircraft always made us alert and spring into action. It could mean a decompression, a crash landing, ditching, smoke or fire in the washroom or in the cabin or galleys… When you hear a siren guys, never, ever ignore it. Sirens and any loud alarms always signal danger!!!!
Yeah but you have context here 1) Sign stolen 2) they have no context. There you work as an attendant and know a siren means something also its an aircraft so usually people would be alert iiregardless vs in the woods and you head a sound no context of the meaning
Master Caution Alarm.
… that’s literally your job. You are on shift. With the full knowledge of various aviation accidents that can occur. Not swimming with your friends.
For people here asking there's no context for the people in this video.. you're right. There not. But if I dunno about you, but if I heard a fuckin siren, only once, my first thought wouod be to get the fuck out. So fuck your context. You hear a siren, you don't keep going, simple. I wouldn't have needed that sign to tell me to leave. The moment I would've heard it for the first time would've been enough for me.

Smart! I don’t know why that thought never occurred to me. Will definitely keep that in mind when traveling!
I was strolling with a friend near the dried up river bed near a dam when a siren blew off. Even though it was menacing and we tried to get away , we were still walking in wrong direction untill a local came running to us and asked us to move to higher ground instead of that direction. We immediately complied and just like this, after third siren, water gushed like anything. It was spectacular from afar but had we been in the area we were walking in, I would definitely not have survived since I don't even know swimming.
if you don't see anyone near, don't go near. the locals know
Back in the 90s, pre internet. I did a lot of climbing in the Cascades. Visited the Colorado Front Range. Was going to hike Long's Peak the next day and asked a ranger at Rocky Mountain National Park about local objective hazards. He said be below treeline by noon due to regular and daily afternoon thunderstorms.
Took his advice and started my hike before dawn. Was descending and approaching the treeline by 11am. Sure enough, sometime after 12, storms began rolling in.
Had I not asked, I would have started much later and been on the summit when the storms started. Though I had technical climbing experience and Long's Peak was relatively easy for me, that bit of local knowledge was critical and could have avoided a dangerous situation.
She put her life at risk to save a friend and ended up being the only fatality. That's very sad. If she would of only cared about herself she'd still be here. Jumping in that strong current to save a friend shows a lot about the type of person she was . RIP ❤️

Truly tragic but ngl if I'm in an area especially in nature and I hear a siren blaring I am running back to whatever the closest region of civilization is.
Me too! I'm not saying I would have realized it in the moment but I figured out early in this story that it involved the opening if a damn. Siren = danger. You hear it once, turn around but three times? What's really tragic however is that thus likely would have been avoided had someone not stolen the warning sign. That person has blood on their hands and I truly hope karma shows them.
Esp. 3 times!!!

Well that’s just you, and not everyone. I definitely wouldn’t run just because a siren went off lol, sirens go off all the time for practice and stuff. Like he said they looked around and nothing looked out of normal so why would they run? Not everyone just runs at same things you would!!
@@zzirfamo24 Sure but they weren't in a place that they knew well. That means they weren't familiar with what this particular warning siren was for. Which means that they should have turned back just to be safe. They could have asked the locals what the siren was for when they got back. If you aren't familiar with a certain area and a siren goes off the smart thing to do would be to head back.
Hey Mr Ballen, I live quite close to this dam, about 10 minutes away in Taupo. It used to be quite a popular swimming spot amongst kids (including myself) in the area, hence the dirt trail that slowly developed there. After this incident happened it shook up our entire town, I remember every year we had Trustpower employees, who were the people that owned the dam, come too our school and give a talk on not swimming in that area and why its so dangerous. Since then they have put up new fences and signage around the tracks and the surrounding area to deter people from swimming. Thanks for all the amazing content you make, it was quiet cool to hear about a case so close to home.
Maybe they should not open the dam on certain days of the week and then people can swim on those days since it seems to be such a big draw. In reality they shouldn't be swimming on a river, they're just asking for trouble and drowning deaths, but closing the dam on say Saturday and Sunday might not be a bad idea.
You should tell them to stop opening the dam up so a bunch of autistic tourists can watch water flow... If it's not actually needed, stop doing it.

@@mike02454 what you seem to fail to understand, is rivers have stronger currents then some beaches, and it’s physically impossible to swim in some of those currents. Also where they had been swimming was the Aratiatia Rapids which is a majorly bad area to swim in from roughness and sudden changes in the water level as it also comes off of the huka falls which are giant falls.
Also, Following Rachael's death, DOC replaced the stolen sign, blocked the unofficial track with a wooden fence and a second steel gate on top of the cliff.
The issue had been raised by Mercury Energy “on a number of occasions” before Rachael’s death, as it wanted the council’s harbormaster to enforce the bylaw. Mercury Energy, which controls the dam, wanted DOC to erect new signs to state “no swimming” rather than just a warning about the risk. In response to Mercury’s assertion about the bylaw, the Waikato Regional Council said it had no power to ban swimming in the river. The bylaw was designed as a mechanism to regulate boating activity, according to the council’s legal advice, not ban swimming in an area which boats cannot even access. Lots of people still swim there outside of the dam times which is not advised and it is really hard to get down there now, they cut down the ropes which lead down there.
that's what i don't get, you mentioned tsunamis, and i would assume that NZ is a place where basically everyone is taught about the sirens when they are kids. so i just don't understand how they could just ignore that type of warning when they should of known that it meant danger was coming.
and i mean, i live in the desert, 12 hours from the ocean, in a place where we don't get any major weather, earthquakes you can feel, or anything that would require a early warning system. there are a couple military bases near by, but they never test their sirens. so we don't have any sirens, tests, or anything like that, so we aren't taught about them.
but the first time i was fishing on a lake as a kid and heard a siren go off, i knew it wasn't a good thing, and it only took a few seconds for me to guess what it was signaling, and by the time it went off again we were already out of the water having lunch and waiting to watch the water lvl drop.
Thank you for all this local information. At least things have changed and the only victim died in honor.
Wait, so the company wanted to make it safer, and the government was like "we don't have the power, sorry"

I'm from Texas and I've heard tornado sirens all my life, many times they are brushed off but you absolutely assess if they should be or not for a few moments when they go off. I've seen flood areas like this that have the same type signs and sirens around pools... I can't imagine ignoring multiple sirens while in a bathing suit in a rocky pool of water where you can clearly see the dried riverbed up stream where the sirens are coming from. Such a bad decision on all of them but so sad. Sirens mean danger.
The biggest thing that I want to be critical of is them not stopping to consider that the alarm could be a warning of the area they're headed to, and just shrugging it off. It's still pretty sad, but I mean if I'm walking through an unknown area and I hear a siren? I'm doubling back to my car. Could be a danger warning, a trespassing warning, anything.
Yea and the fact that they were walking *towards* the siren is just wild to me. If I was chilling in a pool of water and a third siren was going off upstream from where I was... I'm RUNNING out dude
To be fair I'm a kiwi and spent around a month ignoring a siren that went off once or twice a day when I moved to a rural property, turns out the alarm in the village fire station traveled really well over the fields. I'm not saying that ignoring it in this case was a good wise decision but I can see how they could have dismissed it without seeing the sign and being to far away from the shore for it to be a tsunami warning.
Sometimes sirens are turned on for check up
We live in an era of what I call "Millennial Think" that has permeated all parts of society but originated with helicopter moms, padded playgrounds, trigger warnings, and safe spaces.
If I'm allowed to do something, it must be safe.
There wasn't anything or anyone physically preventing them from doing what they were doing. So, it must be safe.
Also being a bit more aware of the local geography and conditions before you go is something they didn't do. Generally if there's a dam, don't stick around too long in the area immediately downstream and run inland if you hear a siren, because dams often release water.
A similar situation happened where I live recently, a man died after being washed away for failing to heed a similar siren.
