  • Its that time of year again! big take away here is to walk behind your combine to verify losses. only trust the monitor after you have verified.

Loved the passive "no loss" jokes 😂 anyways i bought what would otherwise be a useless battery powered leaf blower to keep in the combine...we're hoping it atleast blows the chaff away from the dirt leaving the wheat behind so its easier to see

That's a good idea. Has to work a lot better than kneeling on the ground trying to use your breath. LOL

Another good tip would to be to check for trails or little grain piles on or underneath the combine.... remember one year forgot to close up the unloading auger cleanout port, starting hearing kind of a "hissing" sound coming from inside the cab. Opened up the door and heard it clear as day lol!

Good point! Yes have to make sure the combine isn't leaking. How many older combines have we seen with duct tape!

Good pointers John but what about
    - The effects on the combine of hills and slopes and the effect of gravity on grain behaviour inside the combine on the top sieves in particular whether driving up and down slopes or across slopes?
    - Combine operator awareness of what is happening when driving slopes and how they must alter.
    - The size of the kernels; think of grass seed, clover or oil seed rape at one end of the scale through to corn, tic beans or sunflower at the other.

I have a lexion so it doesn't matter in hills. 3D sieve keeps the grain centered. LOL
You make a good point that yep when going through Hills more than likely you got to slow down going up a hill and on-site Hills depending on the brand you might have to really slow down. On our new German machines that we got when you go up a hill it automatically can open the shoe and slow down the fan and when he went down the hill it can start to shut the shoe a little bit and speed up the fan.
That's what I'm lost monitors come in as well you get them things dialed in and then if anything happens then you know to slow down or get out and check

But my John Deere monitor is saying I'm having 0% losses abd my cameras are working. I don't need to get off the combine

Yeah you're probably also believe that a John Deere s790 is going hang with a Lexion 760. Pffft.

Sounds like a rumble in the corn jungle brewing 🤦‍♂️😂 I like my S series Deere for cleanliness of grain tank and very very little grain loss

Some years you need loss for a quality product that makes money instead of a whole lot of nothing that's worthless.

    • @farming4g
      @farming4g 4 роки тому +2

Yep, that's a good point. Not only looking for kernels, but inspecting them too if finding any.

Was there any grain in the grain heads...?just asking for a friend...ha.

Now I know you don't have any loss because you have a Lexion... but as you move further along with your soil health program does it become harder to see if you have losses because of the plant material that's left on the surface? A small price to pay for the benefits you're getting, I'm sure.

That's a great part about doing cover crops I don't even have to try to get the combine set now. Any losses that germinate out the back of the combine people just think they're part of a cover crop. LOL
