the pilots were not aware that MCAS was installed, BOEING purposely left out MCAS out of the manual. In the Europe people would go to prison for that sort of thing.
I knew someone that worked for Boeing in the 90s. Long before all this trouble happened he told me that he thought it was remarkable that airplanes somehow keep coming out of that place despite how inept it is managed.
When they said "Congratulations" to Boeing, and with the recent Boeing disasters, my mind immediately went into that one Evangelion scene and I laughed my ass off imagining Boeing being sarcastically congratulated by surrounding Airbus people while the theme of Eva is playing in the background.
