Makita 40v Multi-Tool is Finally here!!! ua-cam.com/video/9xkgk_HQvXo/v-deo.html
Orrrrrr thanks sir I’m so so chuffed that you did a video about my little adhaptor, i welled up a wee bit and feel very honoured!!, iv always said one of the main reasons I’m on youtube is it’s a community of sharing, unbiased opinions (ie not the opinion of the company making the tool!) and a melting pot of ideas!, plus I get to be creative which is my favourite thing in my life, just working out how to make this adhaptor and going through the process of making it gave me immense pleasure, things of note!, the Oslo adhaptor is very good buuut the bit that sits into the star lock cup is not star lock shape it’s a hexagon shape and depending on the hardness of the metal used will only touch parts of the star lock cup and could be a wear point!, also the machined end of the pin has to be very very precise im talking micro millimetre precise!! The pins which you sit the blades on are so so crucial as well! With mine it’s an original makita mounting head ( yes the pins on makita multitools do snap off iv seen loads of them with snapped of pins but I’d say they snap of because of the Allen key nut coming slightly loose and it rattles a bit and snaps of the pins) although yes iv had the locking pin welded it’s a original makita part so the end bit which engages with the 2 ball bearings which pull the locking pin down holding the blade is 100% makita as well, if anyone wants one I might be persuaded to make a few but as mr tools and stuff said it won’t be cheap, thanks so so much 🤟🤟
Pleasure. Cheers for sending it to me. Hopefully you get a few subs!
I love the design of your adaptor. I have an idea for another adapter that might be interesting:
For other StarLock tools without the center pin. Basically, the same adapter you made but the center hole is threaded. If you had 3 to 5 of those adapters, then you could quickly swap between non-StarLock blades on your pinless StarLock tool.
(I have a collection of like 10 different scraping tools I use on my non-StarLock tool. I can’t imagine “upgrading” to StarLock and having to buy new blades for more money and having fewer options! That’s not really an upgrade:)
Well done sir 👍 I wonder if Makita would be interested in purchasing your design. I'm sure they could manufacture them much cheaper and also provide you with a nice payday. Would think they would be interested since I believe it would help them sell more multi tools since the starlock only model is a deal breaker for a lot of ppl.
Cheers mark I appreciate it!,I definitely think that when makita brought out this multitool with star lock only they should have brought out an adapter like mine either in the box with the multitool or to be able to buy separately, im sure if they did make one it would be more affordable than my contraption, a third party company will make a version of my adapter im sure at some point, there’s no point me contacting makita!, I have tryd to contact them to see about a possible collab in general but all I got back was a AI written response saying no!, I love makita tools but if one of there tools fails to perform or is badly designed I call them out on it and I suppose they don’t like it, thanks for your support 🤟🤟
I would definitely like to purchase one.
Jon's solution is the best by far. Using a bolt and allen key is going back to the limitations of the Makita BTM50... which I still use regularly 😊
I have old Fein and it has pin system, no tools needed to change blade, i do not see any benefit with starlock, it does not remove people misusing the tool.
Tool always works for you, if it wont cut or remove something, it is wrong tool for the job.
@@pete_lindMost of the other StarLock tools don’t use a pin. The blade just snaps into place. Only this Makita and the cheapest Bosch use pins.
JRR Toolkin - Lord of the retaining pins
if makita would "copy" this adapter and sell it for 20 bucks (or even free with new machine) , it would be great..
Have the OSLO adapter. Drives me nuts! Just will vibrate loose no matter how hard I tighten it.
I agree about the loosening. The only solution I found is to use a long Allen key and tighten it crazy tight.
This is so fantastic! I didn't realize these adapters existed. I have a box of 50 blades I bought I couldn't use, please make another video when someone starts making these in bulk!
Bought some on Amazon
@@mrichter4681 what were they called I couldn't find any. Also what countries amazon?
I’m stoked, I hope Jon can get some dollar for the design. Random is rad 🤟
Good to see that Jon has inspired you to curse again! 😂
Bloody hell, I was so confused. Had to check the video to see what I was watching. Twice. Then I thought.... And I was correct. Well done that man. 🙂 Anyway, back to the video.
Nice collaboration! And a tribute to jon's work
Jon’s gonna be stoked you made this! 👍 someone said you sound like a Brummy Jon 🤘😂
You need the starlock blades for the 80mm cut depth as the dtm52 lost cutting depth due to the anti vibration system. All the ois blades are only 50mm.
I just checked and Oslo tools has available for preorder a new and improved adapter out, it looks to be a nurled grip nut that you tighten onto a screw post on the end of the adapter so you can change the blade by finger tightening it. I'd be curious to see how it compares.
😂 😂 Jon has hit the big time. Well done Jon 👍
Always loved Jons rants 😅
Let's see what he has to say when he's seen this!
I have found it useful to put the blade in upside down from time to time. I think I'll be sticking with the 51, strangely I've just recently bought and love my X-lock angle grinder. These two systems are analogous to each other as are sds drills with older style chucks. The thing to take away from this is who uses the older style chucks with a key these days? Tooless blade/bit changing is the way forward especially if you need to change the angle of the blade to complete a cut at an awkward angle. Besides I bough 100 very cheap blades from aliexpress which i need to get through.
When is Monkeyta going to drop a 40v oscillating tool? I don't want a bunch of different batteries and chargers...
Long live the DTM51!
Nice video as ever, Smart tools do an adapter washer that may join the mongrel mix to make it work cheap?
Great solution, if you embedded a magnet into the adapter it would stick into the holder nicely...
I have just one question, why doesn’t Makita make a normal quick-release OIS?
Looks to me like Bosch is trying to shove these proprietary Starlock mounts by all means.
You could have bunch of those Oslo tool adapters attached to your blades already. Switch the whole thing.
Very cool! I wonder how/if that additional mass affects performance and tool life? I'm guessing it's not noticeable but it IS a guess.
Hi, these are just what I have been looking for. The Oslo tool comes company one is no longer available, where can I buy the others??? Cheers
Im looking too . Did you found anything ?
Me too. Any tips on other adapters yet?
Your voice sounds fine mate. I don’t know what you’re on about.
That’s the only reason I never upgraded because I hate the starlock system. That looks like a great bit of kit
Makita should be making that adaptor and either selling it with the multitool or as an accessory.
Wow, as a londoner..i cant believe how well that accents sounds 😅😅😅 sit back an enjoy tuh brew
There is a company in Holland that makes a professional Stainless steel version the same as the JRR one. Pricey. Works out at over $90 Aus Dollars shipped. There are also others out there similar but of lesser quality.
Can you give me a link to this version from holland? The Oslo one apparently is not available anymore. I can’t find any available adapter anywhere on the internet
They don't seem to make them anymore either. I have messaged both companies to enquire why they no longer make them but as of yet have had no reply...
WHERE TO BUY an adaptor now?
The oslo tool company no longer sells the adapter :( I wasn't able to buy one in time. Does anyone know of someone else who sells them?
While Jons system is good I have no doubt the engineers at Oslo also looked at that option, then the lawyers said that it would infringe on Bosch's Starlock patent so they had to come up with something else. With Hilti now using Starlock and Milwaukee making Starlock blades it looks like it will be the standard going forward.
After being stuck on a job hours from home with a multi tool that requires an allen key in my truck. Which of course rounded off when I needed it. I have sworn to Never again keep a multi tool that requires an allen key 😅
I’m sure it’s great, and I’m a die hard Makita fan, but the Milwaukee M12 is the best OMT. Plus the Milwaukee kit is way cheaper than the bare Makita tool. Another plus is Milwaukee makes great/cheap blades, no adapter needed.
Random is Rad!!
I bet Bosch or Fein are making a ton of money on these Starlock mounts and has sued or threatens to if these adapter companies speak out.
no 40v multi tool yet? Makita does the business very well.. gotta keep both 18v and 40v... there are still many tools available in only 18v platform...
That's makita for you 🙌
Great video tools. Will be interested to see if someone else comes out with one the same as johns. Ive always wondered why tool companies don't design tools shortage on them such as a place to keep the allen key on a multi tool
There's a company in the Netherlands that make an adaptor that is very similar.
@LarsenAndersen do you have a link?
@@LarsenAndersen I am in to buy one if exists, company name, link please?
@@japansh You will have to google search because I can't post the link here
if its possible you could cut a groove in the JRR pin and put a c-clip to retain the adapter.
Fun fact, I am using starlock blades almost exclusively, but with OIS multitools, m12 milwaukee is my way to go.
Do you know if these are still available as I cant seem to find them anywhere? Im in the uk.

The 2 part system is better. I need one!
The Oslo one is a pain in the butt cause at some point the screw will come loose. Tried differend washers but no bueno. Annoying AF.
It's Februrary 2024 as I write this. The Oslo Tool Company no longer sells their adapter and the Amazon product that you linked to is "unavailable". The whole thing is bizarre. How difficult can it be to cast a small lump of metal in the right shape ? I'm sure there must be a market for these things, but some reason they're impossible to find. Anyone have a link to something that works ?
I'm guessing Makita has got involved as all the different manufacturers of these adapters have all stopped selling them and gone quiet on the matter.
Anyone know where to get the multi tool adapter from? Had one but got tools stolen and the oslo company is no longer selling from what I can see
i see what you did there..... nice one adding a bit of "random"
Ryobi with the flex head with an adaptor for a makita battery
@Tools & Stuff Will you do a review on the new lawn mower Makita LM004GZ 40V Self-Propelled Lawn Mower and compare it against the other 40v ones
Possibly.
@@ToolsAndStuffOFFICIAL👍
Random is Rad!
I wanna know how the Oslo version was designed and the designer didn't think "wait, there's a better way" that JRR is so much more obvious than the Oslo. I thought of the JRR version before he introduced the Oslo
But what... is keeping... the XGT... 40Volt... multitool?
Great video, but do you know where i can get adaptor can find them anywhere.
I've posted the names multiple times. I'm just a guy trying to do a nice thing. I'm in no way affiliated with any adaptors. Sadly, all of my attempts to post anything useful have been either automatically or manually deleted. 😢
Additionally there are Chinese starlock bulk packs available on Alibaba and Amazon. I'm also in no way affiliated with Alibaba or Amazon.
@mrichter4681 not surprised, looks like a crack down to impose Starlock mounts.
If you’re going to buy a star lock multi tool, just use star lock blades.. far simpler than faffing around with adapters
Luv my Makita tools, but the DeWalt system craps all over this setup on the multi-tool.
Funny... my voice usually has a Brummy lilt to it when I get a cold.
Frankly, if you own Makita tools, you should be able to afford the Starloc blades.
Hi where can i buy this stuff ?!
Yeah but the problem is that the starlock makita has a bigger range of movement then what those old blades are designed for.
After using the starlock makita, you can't go back it cuts 10 times faster than those old multitools
Yes the blades are more expensive but time is 💰
This machine is a beast.
If you could laugh react videos I would for this one 😂
Any one else have trouble with their Makita not locking back in place after a blade change? It's like the lever needs to turn just a tiny bit more for the blade lock to snap into place? It's 50/50 whether it's going to work or not. Probably around a year old and a massive pain the ****
except when you use bosch / fein starlock the quicklock alow you to change blades in 2 seconds or with one hand in 4sec , blades last rly long ( i use multitool to cut glass / carbon fibre parts and they last me eternity ...3 years and still like brand new , you just need to buy the little more expensive bimetal ones)
i hate those cheaper blades because they dont last as long , only bosch , fein work the best (for USA market there is also Diablo ....its literally bosch with "diablo" on it so it works as good as bosch/fein)
Did your hands change after that cough 🤔
Where can I buy this adapter?
did anybody get back to where to buy the longer pin? .
yeah agreed, these do seem better than oslo. btw oslo would be better with a screw that has a wider head instead of that stupid washer lol.
It needs the washer, I think, to avoid untightening under more powerful oscillations.
I tried to get around to fitting a captive washer to my beloved Oslo bit but didn't manage to.
John's done a grand job. Kudos. Whoever copies it for sale: paint it orange (anti loss feature) and fit a magnet in the top (storage and stay-put features. Boom! A trial sample for 'royalties' gladly accepted! 😉 You'd sell 10,000. Go!
@@UsualYaddaYadda true yeah :)
Seems a lot of effort to avoid just using Starlock blades.
Any news on a 40v multitool?
JRR is better, it would be interesting to see if someone can 3d print them in metal & whether it would last.
Someone already has and replaced the bolt with a timberlok fastener. Don't know how it ran long term. I'd guess that it wears fast. Sorry, can't recall where on net.
Nice One 🤭
Maybe this can be 3D printed with a metal 3D printer
would probably cost more than a tool lol
I’d pay £100 no problem
If some CAD work can be done on that adaptor, it will be easy to get CNC cut - removing the need to hack away at blades and pins. - EDIT: through a service like PCBWay
I got t'uh thinking 😅😅😅
👍👍👍
"Trouble at Mill".
What is the point of starlock, it seems totally pointless for the first place having star lock....
Supposedly, It allows for longer blades and bigger cutting angles. With the ois pins, the longer blades would end up shearing the pins off. With the starlock, there is more contact area and less slop; which means you can apply more power to the blade and make blades longer and increase the cutting angle and nothing wears/breaks prematurely. Which is ,my guess anyway, why the xgt will only ever be starlock. Sure you can buy longer aftermarket blades than oem blades, but they dont really care about your tool.
The best Makita Multi-Tool Hack is to throw it away and buy a Fein/Festo or a Flex/Hilti.
Ouch
F star lock. zero advantage in using it. cost more. pointless.
I dont get that Joke. Was that a imitation of someone I dont know?
There was no imitating.
These companies don't have a clue what they are doing, star lock is pointless.....
Seems like to much faffing about for me
There is nothing wrong with the original design...
