  • Personal review of English shrub rose” Young lycidas” from ‪@david_austin_roses‬
if you’re craving something deep rich and fragrant to fill the gap now left by the retired Munstead wood and Darcey Bussell, this is a rose you’re going to have to look out
Forming a dense round shrub around 4’ x 4’,it produces blooms from mid June all the way through into the back end of November where you will find the colour intensifies becomes much deeper
The flowers are deeply cupped and are heavily rippled in the centre, a rich deep crimson magenta pink edged with silver grey as the bloom fades
As with most roses with a heavy fragrance, it also comes with a high thorn count, they are small numerous and very sharp, the foliage is deep olive green and tinged with Scarlett a edge
My suggestion is you plant this particular shrub in dappled shade receiving around 4 to 5 hours of direct sunlight per day mulch it deeply to avoid stress, as it suffers slightly in my growing experience with black spot and defoliation
It’s the fragrance which will set this rose Well apart from any other, it’s reach deep and heady packed with old rose and mirth, strong notes of blackberry and apple and floral notes of elderflower finished with grapefruit and green tea
Out of the over 100 roses I have reviewed so far. This is one of only a handful to receive a eight star fragrance review.
    Fragrance rating 8⭐️s
