  • 64 year old Volvo still hard at work in the Arctic and now its Winter and time to plow the snow'
The owners of a remote farm way of the highway have asked me to plow into there property on a long arctic forest road. Deep ditches on both sides means a careful plow or risk turning the Volvo over a long way from help.
    Thank you.

Well Simon and family, A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL FROM THE SNARES NZ! Our Christmas Day was Magnificent and Santa delivered our wishes….seeing the endemic and endangered Auckland Islands Yellow Eyed Penguins! Brent and I are overjoyed. They were while we were on Enderby Island yesterday 25/12/23. Todays encounter was with the The Snares crested penguins and a magnificently sunny day with the calmest of seas even the ship’s Captain came out on one of the zodiacs….a very rare occurrence we were told at our briefing this evening. Wifi is expensive so will send pics when back home mid January 2024….I had to keep up to date with what you had showing….see there has been lots and lots of snow and that the good old girl has the door back on😊😊😊.
Warmest wishes all round and don’t forget Kasper’s hugs and kisses too. ❤️🇦🇺🇸🇪

About 40 yrs ago I was a snow plow man . Used a plow just like yours (slushes) . At the start of the yr with the truck & plow in the shop we set the plow down onto 2 pieces of 1/2” plywood , then dropped the shoes ( just behind the cutting edge) down onto the floor, this held the plow up so it would not scrap the gravel of the road .

    • @arctic-rebel
      @arctic-rebel  Рік тому +2

Hi Robert and Thank you. I understand what you are saying, however you may want to watch more videos before you make judgement. First time plowing this road which is ridged, no use for a wide plow so taking of the high gravel is good. Also first plow of the season so no compacted base to plow off, also not good. This set up works great on my normal plow routes. Having said all that really appreciate your time to pass on your own experience. Thank you have a great day.

@@arctic-rebel yes I watched a couple of your vids last winter & tonight the one plowing the church on Christmas .
      Right now I am working on my tractor I purchased in 2004 , a 1989 Case 580 extend a hoe , clam bucket .
The main hydraulic line (1”) coming of the big pump in the front under the radiators is leaking at a mid line connection close to the pump I have really tightened it , but I continues to leak , so it looks like I will have to replace that section , which will require me to drain the 22 gal tank into a cut off 50 gal drum , placed under the side of the tractor . About 5 yrs ago I setup an electric pump system , with filter so I could re-install good oil . Have used it 4-5 times , 2x on the differential hypoid gear oil & I think 3x (this will make 4x) on the hydraulic.
Yes the hydraulic requires a different filter than the hypoid
Be safe , eat good , stay warm , work hard
      Happy New Yr

Very nice video Simon. I love the beauty of the snowcovered trees in the winter, and the forest is so quiet and peaceful. Does it live people permanent on that remote farm? I see they have electricity at least. You have a really good machine there, that old Volvo BM is a very solid machine, and the engine must be very good too - it isn't smoking at all. Take care in the very cold weather we have in Norway and Sweden right now, in Finnmark it has been almost -50 I have seen.

Enjoy watching the plow videos. Where was the door up till the barricade? Does it store on the side of the cab?

Very observant, I arrived at the barrier the day before but with the wrong code. The next day I had the correct code and it had snowed much more. I put the door on because it is a long way to drive from my yard and very cold. With the door on and the cab heater I can keep my toes for another day. Merry Christmas.

The one thing I see is while on the road you were pushing a lot of snow ahead of you, and the reason being you were not going fast enough to make the snow roll off . I think it would be easier on the tractor to not be pushing so much weight , by moving a little faster, like you were on the roads by the barns .
Oh & I love those tire chains & hope you have a great Christmas & new yr

Hi Robert, this is a very narrow track with deep ditches on both sides. My tractor has an air leak which means it will not stop instantly and if one of the wheels drop of the edge it instantly rolls over. No help is coming here and if I am injured I die before help can arrive. There is also no money to fix any damage and I 100% reply on that tractor. The tractor can push mountains on tick over so no problem for it at all, the problem comes when you run it hard it is an unrestored 1963. On my main routes and routes already plowed we have no problem rolling the snow without using huge amounts of fuel or risk. So whilst I understand what you are saying, there are way to many real life factors that have to be taking into consideration above all else in order me and machine make it back to the yard each day in a region you can die real fast. I absolutely appreciate your input but I spend 6 months a year doing this this no money and very old equipment in constant extreme cold and it is not easy plowing a track for the first time when you know one mistake can cost me everything. Thank you for joining I do appreciate your time and input. All the best for the Holiday season.

@@arctic-rebel Thanks for the reply , many channels just have a click, quick response button , but you gave a real reply?
As I watched this vid , I could every now & then see the gravel in the front snow so I watched for shots of behind the tractor , & it appeared that there was plenty snow left on the road , not just bare gravel , so it was a little confusing, but when you said the road was rutted , that explained it all !
Yes be safe by all means !
All the roads I plowed were ones I also maintained all yr round , either “1” tar coated , or”2” well packed gravel , these I graded with a Champion Grader , so knew them well .
The plow truck we used was a 478 cu” gas Ford supper duty , short wheel base single axle posi- trackion , pushing 12’slusher & a 8’ wing on a side post .
37&1/2 hrs straight was the longest shift I ever had to do . Also used the grader in the winter . Mounted a. 4’ high Bull blade (same width as the grader) on the front , used that to punch out turnaround places that would always get smaller as the winter progressed , also mounted a side post & 12’ (it was huge) used that to cut the snow banks down from 3-4’ to about 12-16” with the wheels 1-2’ inside the snow bank , doing so at full throttle. To go around electric poles that were only about 6’ off the road , I would lower the end of the wing , that would load it with snow , causing it to skate , push the rear or the grader into the middle of the road at the same time trying to lift the wing , which it would not until about clear of the snow , all the while steering to the left to keep me going strait down the road . Soon as the wing would lift , I would set it back to its proper height to continue on cutting the bank down .
To do this operation I also had to chain up & with no help , but they were not like your chains , they were more like single tire truck chains, but large enough for the grader, & they were a chore , not nearly as heavy or positive traction as yours.
Are yours chains home made or from a log skidder ?
It is a shame that you have to do all this with no help & no pay !
