    Don't know if anyone has already mentioned it, but the shells should not necessarily be thrown away; it can be boiled and used for fish stock. Here in the States we use it for gumbos, chowders and the like. Obviously, the boil will need to be strained, but it's quite wonderful for other dishes.

    Hi trojs I have just splashed out on a new telly 58 inch ,I can now watch your vids in comfort without squinting keep them coming just watched vid on picking spiders , haven't yet tryed one because I live in London and I have never seen any the shops sad never mind ttfn 😂

    Great video. I have seen spider crabs while diving and catching lobster in Florida, but never tried spider crab. Looks great to eat.

      It varies from year to year where they walk. Also if there are miles & miles of tangle nets blocking their way in wont help.

      Have been thinking about it. Catching a few Bass & Pollock at the moment only seen 1 mackerel in the last few days

    Sometimes you could use the shell to make a bisque. I have not tried it yet but it’s on my cooking list at some stage as it can be time consuming. Perfect during covid lockdown though.

      They are very tasty well worth a try especially diving you should be able to find the biggest ones that don't fit into the crab pots.

    Never seen one done before Troj, I've done LOADS of brown crabs , the shell from crab and lobster make REALLY good fish stock for fish soup or for sauces

      I would say brown crab are easier to pick than spider but taste I would have to give it to the spider. Fish stock I can imagine never really eaten fish soup before though.

    I put a capful of white vinegar in too. It enhances the flavor of the crab and makes it easier to crack the shell.

      Brown stuff is called crab butter.

    Have you ever saw them being cleaned out by air pressure? Do it in an old fishtank on its side and use a compressor and air jet and blow the meat out and scrape the meat out with a kitchen spatula, the set up looks like a sand blasting chamber, your looking at your hands from the top of the tank, it was used as a quick way to dress crab for commercial sale up here in north east scotland, the legs and body was put back in the shell along with the brown meat and claws were sold separately

    Here in United States or at least where I am we call that the guts in internals you make it into a nice little dipping sauce crab butter

      @jeremy orourke we call it brown meat however I’m always dubious as to which bits are good and the bad however would be nice to have an explanation on dipping sauce or butter making methods?

      .. yeah same here I don't eat that stuff I just know some of my Samoan friends eat it when we go crabbing they tell me don't clean and cook the crab bring them back hole we want to do it so we can have the crab butter

    In Maryland we use a spice called Old Bay and we steam our crabs we steam them and we use a lot of Old Bay while we're steaming them in the pot very very delicious. Old Bay. It's a seasoning. Very nice video you have there. I'm going to try to use the tip you gave about picking the meat without cracking the shell. Thank you. Have a great day and remember Jesus loves you. 🙂

      I have tried old bay, I bought some and got it sent over but only used it on fish not on crab. I have been steaming crab recently so its something I will try. Thanks

    I heard a Jersey story once about how someone cooked a spider crab and then having done so chucked the whole crab away and strained off the remaining water for soup.

    We do vinegar and old bay for the crabs I grew up eating. I’m so jealous I want to eat one of these big boys one day.

      They are generally regarded as the tastiest of the crabs here but are a little more work picking

    Dry and grind the shell. Feed it to your chickens. If you don't have any chickens, get some. Great video. Take your riggers off in the kitchen LOL.

    Brilliant! I've just, last night, caught my first 2 Spiders and have one in the pot right now. Have picked Brown before but never Spider........ Not gonna tell my wife and daughter I've watched this vid, I'll just collect the brownie-points of an expert Spider picker! Thanks for the great vid.

    As a child on holiday it was always Dads thing to dress a brown crab !! and he taught me of course !1
    the crabs of the Yorkshire coast are real solid and meaty !! even the brown meat has a good texture !! we always call it the "cream" yummy !

    I was really surprised to see how much of that large crab was shell, it made me wonder how many crabs do they take to fill a 125 gram of crab meat; your bowl looked big so would you know how many gram of meat was in that.
    i know i am full of questions but that's just the way i am i could almost taste it here in the UK.

      Its a lot more than it looks at a guess probably 500g to 750g from that crab (2.4kg crab) It can vary a lot how much you get because when the crab has not much meat it will have water instead so when you weigh the crab its the same weight.

    I was a chef for a while and a very nice Italian restaurant and the way we did the legs of crab we used scissors you cut down one side cut down the other open it up and you have all the meat the easiest way you can possibly ever get the meat out of crab legs scissors

      Brown meat on spider crab is not nice so I have been told by a number of people who eat the brown meat in the brown crab. Apparently its watery and bitter.

      Yes you can use them. I used to make crab & lobster picks years ago when I worked with silver. I think most people kept them in the boxes though :)

      They are edible and extremely tasty, in my experience they are preferred by many. Some other crabs around the world may contain High levels of toxins often due to an algae but we do not have this problem here.

    When I go back to Norfolk to see my parents we have crab with salt & vinegar, & a loaf of bread. Always worth the hard work. I always have brown crab, but have never tried a spider crab.

    The proper way to cook any shellfish is to cook it in whatever water it lives in it is the perfect salt balance whether it be brackish freshwater or saltwater and yes there is a different content of salt in different areas cook them in the water they came from

      They wont hurt you as far as I am aware. Apparently they don't taste very nice. We call them dead mans fingers here that was enough to put us off eating them as a kid.

    I’m usually too hungry for all that and I can’t stand cold food! I would break that sucker open n eat it while it’s hot. Seems like such a waste of time, I’ve never had a prob just breaking and eating crab by hand.

      Some people don't mind just breaking it open themselves and eating it even with a few bits of shell. This is more for if your preparing it for the table & guests.

    You lost me when you didn’t give your viewers the option to see the brown meat because you didn’t like it.

      You cant miss it. its all the brown /yellow substance in the crab when you rip the shell off. Its internal organs primarily the liver also called brown meat. Mainly eaten on the brown crab not so much with spider crab as it can be very watery and bitter. Had nothing to do with whether I like it or not.
