Smallest rod I have is a 4 inch 3/8ths with a spike antler handel and that is about the smallest I use. My regular is 1/2 '' × 6inch with a big oval carved handle from elk bone. It works great kinda a soft mix and it showers molton globs of sparks every time . Looking forward seeing you edc fire making with it . Sorry to hear of family issues, same here , hang in there and relax in the woods . I find the solitude in my little corner of the forest invaluable for keeping a grip on my sanity and inner peace ✌.
I am a big fan of the Ranger Grip 55. In my opinion it is the perfect backup tool for bushcraft. Small blade, small saw, but effective enough! You and I both agree on the Victorinox Walker. I've bought several and added one each to my fire kits.
I’ve just outfitted a couple of my SAK’s with the firefly and tortious gear “fire corkscrew thingies”. I was skeptical at first but they both work really well if you know their limitations. Especially used together. They’re great weightless, spaceless backups to your backups. And fun to play with. 👍🏼

My favorite ourtdoors pocket knife and the favorite among many great man, like Ethan Becker, is the Victorinox Rucksack,which is a very similar knife to this hunter model. Actually the only difference,is just the colour and the smaller blade instead of the common can opener,flathead screwdriver. Great tools in a small package, it kicks way higher than it's size, which is one more reason it makes it the best pocket knife for the outdoors! Cheers Rob, keep up the good work!
I bought one of these over a decade ago, my first victorinox that I bought myself. It is very worn by now tho, the blade is pretty ground down, the deer print is worn off by now. I must honestly say that out of my saks, the hunter is my least favourite, it feels feeble compared to the other larger SAK's like the forester, and the locking button might be more convenient to operate than the other liner lock SAKs, it doesn't lock up as sturdy as the liner locks. The knife never failed me, but. I'm not a big fan of it, i just bought it because it looked nice, in those 10+ years i only used the serrated blade once. In hindsight all I can say is that I like my victorinox forester more, it feels like higher quality, is more functional generally and even a little cheaper. It doesn't come with the nice olive scales tho. The farmer is my favourite non locking victorinox tho.
Got a leatherman rebar i really love and have a fire fly taped into the inside of the frame but after seeing your Hunter, I need to get me one! Thank you! Great video!
Dear Rob, I am also a fan of the "bigger" Victorinox SAK. I own some/ many with liner-lock and one with slide-lock. Even if one-hand-opening is critical to use in Germany by law, they are my favorite. But what ever: they all are made of brilliant and long-life quality. Even my SAK1 wich I got when I entered the armed forces and still habe is approximately 30 years now, got restored for a very, very fair and low price by Victorinox. This knive is in best condition but also in retirement now - so it´s upt to it´s "grandchildren" to support me where ever I go. Best regards from the North of Germany: René
I had the hunted for a while but really missed having scissors. Replaced it with the outrider which is the perfect outdoors 111mm IMHO. I do wish victorinox would make a 111mm with a small secondary blade similar to the ones on the 91mm

I have not been out camping in the woods for decades, in fact since ending my army reserve service and back then I had a large Spanish made clone of the Buck 110 & a Victorinox 58mm Classic in my pockets. I don't own a 111mm Hunter but I have the 111mm Outrider & the 120mm Ranger Grip 79 as my emergency use SAK's . I also have a 111mm liner lock Forester, 2 x111mm Rucksacks ( the slide lock version of the Forester) 2 x 111 Picnickers ( slide lock Nomads ) & 2 x 111mm liner lock Nomads ( one of which is the Garant model ) . I include all these large SAK's in my EDC rotation along with a genuine Buck 110, Buck 110 LT, Buck 112 Ranger & 112 Ranger Slim Select & several large Flipper knives from Civivi & Kershaw . These knives form the large blade component of my EDC along with a hybrid 58 Victorinox SilverTech scaled Midnite Mini-Champ on my keyring & often instead of the large blade knife I will carry an 84/85mm SAK such as the Sportsman, Tourist, Swiss Buck Odyssey, EvoGrip S17 or EvoGrip14 or a 91mm SAK such as the Huntsman, Climber or Compact, a 93mm Pioneer X or Farmer X or various Case XX or Rough Ryder knives. In short I have a large selection of medium & large bladed knives in my EDC rotation & you will always find at least 2 knives in my pockets when I go out. I also have the Firefly or the Fire Ant ferro rods & a tinder spiral on the corkscrew of almost all of my SAK's - large or medium sized.

I love victorinox knives. I carry a small 90mil for every day, and in the woods i always take a ranger grip 79 with me. Those fire ants in the corkscrew are a bit gimmicky, in a pinch, if that is all you are left with, you'd sure be glad to have one. But not as the only source, for me at least.
Nice tool. I’ve not tried those tiny ferry rods - they look a bit fiddly - so I keep a Mini LMF (smaller than the scout, don’t think they make them any more) with my SAK. Then again, if the small ferro works for you then it’s a good thing. If you like this fireplugs, take a look at the fire rope stuff they also sell in the Bath Bushcraft Shop - pretty neat - cut off a disc, rub it between your hands to fluff up the fibres and any spark will light it.

I only tried using the notch hole method to strike against a fluffed up tinder plug, Had the same experience as you had here! No issues on the plug. but saw is best :)

It looked like a toy for kids to burn down the house/snap. Toothpick has more merit even tho one can whittle one in seconds. ~ Second li'l blade/can open, gimmie that.

The tinder that fits in the corkscrew works even after being underwater and then used. Using the wire stripper is just if you have no saw to use. I do not rely on the Fire Fly to replace a Ferro Rod. Fire Fly rods are a smart idea for always having a way to make fire if you need too. You can also make a lanyard using Fire cord. Fire cord is just par-cord with an internal strand of tinder cord that works the same as Firefly tinder. Just cutting a small piece off the end of less than an inch is plenty to start a fire. Then you can melt the end back using the fire you made to save the cord for the next use. A length of the Fire cord I have also includes a strand of clear monofilament fishing line too. Ten to twenty feet of it is plenty to make traps, fishing lines, fires and many other good uses. Each internal strand tied together provides more than 100 feet of line for use.🤔🙂👍

Leatherman actually annoy me 😄I bought one for an out of work activity and figured as I was a mechanical technician by trade I'd be using it at work all the time. I barely used it once and it was really annoying weighing down my boiler suit pocket. I dug out an old Victorinox Camper and decided to carry that at work and I used it all the time. They are just really useful. I dig that Huntsman although I'd miss the 2D phillips on the can opener but if you are just carrying it in the woods it makes a really great Bushcraft multitool.

I have had a Swiss Army pocket knife since being a small boy (quiet a few years then), they have always been robust and practical so I am a big fan. Jinx - I lost my Victorinox in the House somewhere and needed to replace it literally 3 days ago.....(like a fool I swapped it for a Spyderco ladybug in K390 to try for a little while) I spent bloody ages looking at which model to buy and nearly went with the hunter, in the end I went with the camper for half the price but still with a saw and main blade. And the reason I needed it so badly?......it's apple season and I'm forever needing a toothpick when I'm walking the dogs and scrumping wild apples 🤣. Great review mate, you picked about the best model....in reality a decent sized locking blade and a saw are the main functions you'll use - I'm a big fan too, I've had a Victorinox on my car keys for 30 years. Theres a Roman era version in the Fitzwilliam museum..... I wouldn't have the dexterity to use a Firefly - old sausage fingers would snap that taking it out of the packaging!
I’ve never really used sak’s, until I decided to try a ranger grip hunter. It now lives in my pocket lol I love that thing. Also replaced the toothpick with a firefly. Fantastic bit of gear.
I 24/7 carry the SAK Huntsman red version, have done for years. Recently added the Firefly ferro rod which works great with a small piece of firecard which I keep in my wallet. I suppose this would be my survival knife in a SHTF scenario.

It's just tough to beat victorinox blades. Just recently added the tortoise gear fire starting corkscrew dealybobbers to mine and i'm actually likin the setup.
Nice video that. Perhaps the wire stripper and firefly would work better for a Left Handed Person as then the sparks will be closer to the tinder. Where do you buy the ancillaries? When I bought my Victorinox knives, the most important feature for me was the Corkscrew and therefore, I do not possess one with a saw blade albeit, I do have the German Army issued knife which I think as a layman, it is cleverly put together and even has a metal sheath/cover for the saw blade itself. Please show sometime in the future how you got a Firefly into the corkscrew and to stay there as I don't have a Firefly to experiment with. Ps. when are you going to answer the Q&A with the A part?
Q&A next week, I was waiting to get 1000 views but time is ticking on. The one in a corkscrew is called a fire ant, I had these little gadgets direct from Tortoise gear in the USA, not cheap with shipping and import duties, but as I mentioned I'm a kit junkie!!!
I have a Hunter XT, got it instead of the Hunter for OHO opening main blade and larger OHO round tip serrated gutting blade 😅 unfortunately you lose the awl and bottle opener but i consider it an acceptable tradeoff in this case 🙂
My favorite firestarters, are my homemade ones that I make with cotton pads (those that women use to remove make up) that put into melted parafin wax. You can cut them of into 2 or as many pieces as you like, so you don't have to use all the buscuit if the weather is good! If the weather is rainy windy etc, you can use it as it is, it will provide more fire that will burn for linger too. Easy to make, easy to carry and they work. My emergency firestars though, are a bit more complicated to make, I'll refer on the materials I use for those. It's wax, wood shavings, vaseline, cotton balls and a shot glass to use as a mold. Best performance I've ever seen from any firestarter. Whoever needs the recipe, I can provide video links, that show how it's done.
Had one loved that knife threw it away with a load of rabbit guts yes I know what a plank tried Tony at moonraker the green is discontinued so bought the hunter xt the gutting blade on both knifes are brilliant
Haven't tried the wire stripper, but watching the demonstration, seems like if you were left handed and sparks were going away from knife on outer edge of stripper instead of inner (towards the other blades on knife) that it might be better. But I'm also not left handed. Cheers

4:16 I've got Felix Immler's SAK book of 63 projects, where he advocates using the Ranger Grip 79 version of the knife. I must say I really like the look of that one, especially the blade shape (one-handed opening is nice). I was wondering what you think of it, compared to this knife?

My mate Nick turned 50 last week and he said that now he's going to be more childish than ever! Being a grown up sucks , all that responsibility, I'm going through some family stuff at the moment which isn't nice and getting out to the woods is a fantastic tonic.

Facebook isn't everyone's cup of tea but I just use it for these groups, Bushcraft tradepost and UK knife collectors are excellent groups to put wanted ads up.

Sharpen the edge of the wire stripper, hold the firefly along finger or a stick, drag knife along it and flick sparks where you want them to go.

Great review mate, you picked about the best model....in reality a decent sized locking blade and a saw are the main functions you'll use - I'm a big fan too, I've had a Victorinox on my car keys for 30 years.

I’ve never really used sak’s, until I decided to try a ranger grip hunter. It now lives in my pocket lol I love that thing. Also replaced the toothpick with a firefly. Fantastic bit of gear.
They are great and with the firefly (and helix tinder) a fantastic pocket tool.
I 24/7 carry the SAK Huntsman red version, have done for years. Recently added the Firefly ferro rod which works great with a small piece of firecard which I keep in my wallet.
I suppose this would be my survival knife in a SHTF scenario.

Just recently added the tortoise gear fire starting corkscrew dealybobbers to mine and i'm actually likin the setup.
Nice video that. Perhaps the wire stripper and firefly would work better for a Left Handed Person as then the sparks will be closer to the tinder. Where do you buy the ancillaries? When I bought my Victorinox knives, the most important feature for me was the Corkscrew and therefore, I do not possess one with a saw blade albeit, I do have the German Army issued knife which I think as a layman, it is cleverly put together and even has a metal sheath/cover for the saw blade itself. Please show sometime in the future how you got a Firefly into the corkscrew and to stay there as I don't have a Firefly to experiment with. Ps. when are you going to answer the Q&A with the A part?

The one in a corkscrew is called a fire ant, I had these little gadgets direct from Tortoise gear in the USA, not cheap with shipping and import duties, but as I mentioned I'm a kit junkie!!!
I have a Hunter XT, got it instead of the Hunter for OHO opening main blade and larger OHO round tip serrated gutting blade 😅 unfortunately you lose the awl and bottle opener but i consider it an acceptable tradeoff in this case 🙂
My favorite firestarters, are my homemade ones that I make with cotton pads (those that women use to remove make up) that put into melted parafin wax. You can cut them of into 2 or as many pieces as you like, so you don't have to use all the buscuit if the weather is good! If the weather is rainy windy etc, you can use it as it is, it will provide more fire that will burn for linger too. Easy to make, easy to carry and they work.
My emergency firestars though, are a bit more complicated to make, I'll refer on the materials I use for those. It's wax, wood shavings, vaseline, cotton balls and a shot glass to use as a mold. Best performance I've ever seen from any firestarter. Whoever needs the recipe, I can provide video links, that show how it's done.
The make- up pad ones I've made myself and the other ones you refer to I was sent a few months ago and they are really good.

Yes, though the specific RAF model # was MriGQ1604 ( NSN 5110-99-701-8504 ) and had a GQ Parachutes logo.
Had one loved that knife threw it away with a load of rabbit guts yes I know what a plank tried Tony at moonraker the green is discontinued so bought the hunter xt the gutting blade on both knifes are brilliant

Haven't tried the wire stripper, but watching the demonstration, seems like if you were left handed and sparks were going away from knife on outer edge of stripper instead of inner (towards the other blades on knife) that it might be better. But I'm also not left handed. Cheers
On a different SAK Knife this tool would probably be situated closer to the edge making it better to use but I'm still not a fan of using it that way.
@@RobEvansWoodsman The saw blade edge was obviously superior and I agree that those tiny ferro rods are fiddly and fragile. I also broke the first one I tried. And they're pricey here.

4:16 I've got Felix Immler's SAK book of 63 projects, where he advocates using the Ranger Grip 79 version of the knife. I must say I really like the look of that one, especially the blade shape (one-handed opening is nice). I was wondering what you think of it, compared to this knife?
I personally prefer this type of handle , I have two others with this handle, one has the thumb hole but I prefer this lock to that one.
@dennisleighton2812 I have the Rangergrip79 as well as the Huntsman, however I find it bulky/heavy in the pocket and it doesnt have scissors which is a big miss for me.

The lock on the side is the old way, not sure if you'll get one unless it's second hand.
