  • UN Special Envoy for Climate Action Michael R. Bloomberg and OceanX founder Ray Dalio are two of the largest supporters of ocean protection and exploration in the world. Now, Bloomberg Philanthropies and Dalio’s OceanX will help provide a critical platform to increase the world’s collective understanding of our oceans, driving towards the shared goal of protecting them.
At a time when the oceans require our critical attention, this new partnership commits 185 million dollars over the next four years to projects for ocean exploration and scientific discovery, awareness and education, issue advocacy, policy development, and conservation.
The announcement is marked by the completion of the partnership’s first combined project, an expedition to the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument on OceanX’s marine research and exploration vessel the Alucia.
This mission gave scientists the chance to dive down in submersibles into parts of the Monument previously unvisited by humans, making discoveries that were new to science, and recording these unique environments on camera.
The images and data collected will demonstrate the importance of this particular monument, as well as marine conservation across the globe.
Stay tuned for more from this mission, as well as future missives from the most under-explored part of our planet: our ocean.

This might not be a popular question, but how can we help get 3rd world nations to get on board with this (the citizens not just government). In those countries they have so many hardships that they can't really afford to care about the ocean and in many cases they aren't educated to care. Of course we in first worlds need to do our part in keeping our part of the world clean but what can we do in 3rd world nations to help out? And we can't simply just throw money at those governments because there is too much risk that the money won't actually go to environmental projects.

A lot of the problems of over fishing I believe is done illegally by other countries. Fishing boats travel the world looking for catch. They don't care about borders and preserves. They long haul net these anyway. Their by catch of sea mammals and protected species are killed in the process. They have canning and processing ships near them.
These make it nearly impossible for local fishermen to fish their normal grounds. They then have to go farther out to hopefully find fish.
What is needed is international action to put a stop to illegal fishing. If the major countries supplied manned coast guard to go after the law breakers this would help.
Countries like China and North Korea would have a cow. Blow up and sink a few of their trawlers and they might get the message.

@@311jbknight I was more talking about the plastic issue, but this is an issue too. Obviously we wouldn't want to flat out attack ships belonging to a world power. If that country (like China) isn't on board then just tariff the snot out of them. If the rest of the world does it to them they don't have much of an option.
