- It's time to play every version of Donkey Kong 3! The one no one cares about! But trust me, we got some crazy stuff to talk about. Aliens? Nukes? Some weird stuff. You won't wanna miss it.

Stanley deserved a cameo in New Donk City, he could’ve been in a greenhouse, even.
Yea
It'd be perfect!
What if he gave you bug spray and you need to get his flowers back
Man if he gave you his bug spray gun and you had to defend his plants from waves of bugs coming out of hives that would of been perfect.
That would've been perfect!
Gonna be honest Hudson's donkey Kong 3 feels like a creepy pasta with those backgrounds making me wonder what was going on behind the scenes.
The Hudson Soft game was insane I loved seeing it. They were like "no one cares for DK3 so lets just make the theming as absurd and crazy and hope no one will notice the gameplay is whatever." Have DK just floating over aliens and a nuclear explosion because why the heck not.
Apparently they just scanned a bunch of images they thought looked good on the computer lol
I would love to see someone making an adaptation of the game’s “story”
I imagine it's a hallucination or scary dream Donkey Kong had while in chemo for his rectal cancer.
The Great Counter Atrack with how much those weird backgrounds went on gave off the vibe like one of those early 2010 gaming creepypastas, made especially even more so with it being lost media at one point
Someone managed to find and contact one of the original developers to try and figure out what was up with the images. Allegedly the office had a early photo digitizer they wanted to try out, and those images happened to be what turned out the best.
I read that too but it doesn't really add up because the images are deliberate in the story. They're not just random photos.
@@TheLonelyGoomba I think it is reasonable. They probably digitized hundred or so photos, picked out the best ones, then ordered them in a way that resulted in something resembling a narrative.
@@VodkaVodokaif it makes sense, it's not the *FUN answer* though XD
Despite The Great Counter Attack being such unfun noise of a game, the weirdness and elusiveness of it makes me glad it's not lost media anymore.
As a huge Game & Watch Fan I would absolutely loooove a Game & Watch ranking video
Maybe Mario had the right idea to cage Donkey Kong if he was actually a galactic conqueror all along.
At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo suddenly remembered Stanley the Bugman exists and just put him in Mario Kart 9.
I’d be cool with that
I hear he's sharing an apartment with Wart from Super Mario Bros. 2.
@@jessragan6714He kills bugs and Wart eats them, they're great friends
Or playable in Smash
It sure is lucky that the lonely Goomba got stuck between the specific two pipes that just so happened to have every single game and gaming device ever made laying around, as well as everything needed to get it all working.
I can't believe you put yourself through that Hudson Soft version, but I'm glad you did. I'm baked and that whole bit with the story of the aliens made me laugh so hard. My god, what were those designers ON.
It's like if Yoko Taro got his hands on the game.
You missed the opportunity to end the video by having the Gaijin Goombah-fan Shroobs nuking the Earth while gloating over a box of Urban Yetis. But otherwise, solid video!
The what now?
The gaijin goombah-fan shroobs or Urban yeti?
@ both
I love the idea of a bug exterminator and a gorilla (with his personal bug army) endlessly duking it out while hitching a ride with some aliens to see their homeworld, and then they go back to Earth and continue to fight against the backdrop of nuclear war.
I love this video format, so entertaining
@@butchmcporksaw you're gonna have a good time this year then
@@TheLonelyGoomba Looking forward to it.
Same
I believe he reason why Donkey Kong 3 is such a massive departure from the others was due to the Donkey Kong Jr. lawsuit. The original Donkey Kong was developed by Ikegami Tsushinki Co. Nintendo developed Donkey Kong Jr. in house, but used most of the original Donkey Kong's code, which they were sued for stealing code. Donkey Kong 3 was probably made into a different genre so they can't claim they stole their code again.
The thing with DK3 was it was a conversion kit for DK or DK Jr cabinets so it was never really an official dedicated arcade game.
Stanley huffed too much bug spray on the counter attack version.
I really want to know the story behind that unhinged Husdon version
The "shh" on the front of the cabinet isn't stanley's bug spray, it's donkey kong telling you to stay quiet about all the atrocities he's commited against the poor bugcatcher
3:46 - Still one of the darkest death's, I've seen in a Nintendo game.. Pure nightmare fuel.
It just occurred to me, given that Nintendo hadn't originally planned to licence third party games on the Famicom and thus wouldn't have access to games like Galaga, i wonder if perhaps Donkey Kong 3 was originally created for the sake of having an arcade shoot em up that they could port to thier new system. I dont have any real proof of this but i think that this is an interesting video game conspiracy theory.
The “story” of The Great Counterattack is one of the most mind boggling things I’ve ever seen in a Nintendo endorsed game. What the bloody Hell? 😂
Went to an arcade with my father once, and all he played was DK3. He got up to level 17 and then out loud said to me “ it’s a bit dull, you mind taking over?”, and then he just left! I was fucking astounded.
My Dad said "That Donkey Kong game doesn't look good" when I was playing Donkey Kong 3 for the first time.
Did anyone realize Nintendo made the final arcade DK game a shooter that flopped, while the original DK was made to use cabinets of Radar Scope, another shooter thay flopped
Coincidence? I think NOT!
Just drop an small contribution for the Lonely Goomba for making hilarious and relatable videos of video games and loneliness. Thank you L.G. and don't change who you/your team as you're awesome
@@MrMartellSincere thank you my dude
@TheLonelyGoomba you're welcome
One thing I don't understand is why did they create a completely new character that they never used again for this game instead of just using Mario
They wanted to copy trends, if you notice the enemies's flying pattern is kinda similar to galaga. No wonder it flopped.
Actually Stanley the Bug Man had previously appeared in the Game & Watch title Greenhouse, making Donkey Kong 3 his second video game appearance.
My guess is they wanted a third character as marketable as Seth Rogan and Chris Pratt.
At least Stanley got to be a trophy in super smash Bros melee. It's not much but it's something.
Nintendo has a bad habit of doing this, especially with their really good designs. Just look at the mechs from Battle Clash, Miror B. from Pokemon, Heavy Mole from Kirby, or pretty much any bad guy from Wario Land ; used in exactly 2 games, and never again!
That Hudson Soft version is so wild that I just kept waiting for you to say "just kidding, this is a Donkey Kong 3 creepypasta fan game" but it never came. The stark difference between the dark, abstract, semi-realistic backgrounds and the wacky bug shooting gameplay makes it feel so uncanny. Felt like any second a heavily pixelated corpse was going to appear on screen.
Well, Lonely Goomba, my friend, I think it's very difficult to make many "unique" levels in Donkey Kong 3, as it plays all out inside a greenhouse!
Donkey Kong has for some reason (likley heavily bored) begun rampaging in Mario & Luigi's cousin Stanley's greenhouse garden and it's up to Stanley to stop the big ape from stirring up any more insects that will soon destroy his flowers. Stanley must save his precious flowers by spraying bug spray on Donkey Kong and exterminating all the attacking bees he angers.
Hey, thanks for taking the trip! Sorry you had to, but it's appreciated! Donkey Kong 3 could have worked in theory, but... it just felt... so disjointed from the first two. Like, Donkey Kong Jr., okay, Mario caged up DK and now DK's son is trying to get his father back. The third part could have been... I dunno... play AS Donkey Kong and try to get back home, but some crazed monster commanding bugs kidnaps Junior, and Donkey Kong has to shoot him down with bug spray? The stages could be New York, a boat, a port, and finally, the home island? I dunno, just came up with it off the top of my head.
I guess Stanley was the biggest problem here story-wise for me.
And I realized I just spent an entire UA-cam comment talking about the story of DK3... huh...
Finally, he managed to get to "Playing EVERY Single Version of Donkey Kong 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble". Not enough people talk about it.
To be fair, there are at least 3 versions I'm aware of, maybe a few more obscure ones as well. Perhaps someday he'll make a video on that topic.
@@kygigni What’s the third version? SNES/SFC, GBA, and…?
@@leethompson-kolar6333 I counted Donkey Kong Land III as well. Given that some of the fundamental aspects of the core game were changed in this video, I considered to count it as a version of DKC3, despite having different levels. But it's debatable wether you can do that or not.
@@kygigni There's also a japanese exclusive GBC one, like uniroincally DKC3 might indeed be the one with the most versions out of the Country games.
@@viejodamis09 Very interesting.
3:43 “Because no one suspects the butterfly…”
I'm so fucking sick of good channels being thrown under the bus. These videos are so entertaining.
FINALLY, Goomba's talking about the actually good games
Some of these ports were really flat, unlike Rouge the Bat's chest.
Nice to see you here.
The trilogy completed at last
That must have taken a Donkey Kong's banana hoard amout of self-control to not mention DK getting shot in the nuts until over halfway through the video! That was the first thing I saw, and couldn't believe it got approved. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
1:52 No one will understand how much I laughed at this part.
I'll tell you what, Stanley and Donkey Kong being abducted by aliens and caught in a nuclear war was not something I was expecting to happen
A very bizarre game on the DK trilogy, it wasn't a hit because it was a simple shooter, and Stanley has almost faded into obscurity. I'm pretty sure he had an episode in the very first DK cartoon series and he is a throphy on Smash Bros and that's about it, I think.
But why would Donkey Kong break into a greenhouse and steal plants?
Donkey Kong didn't break into a greenhouse to steal plants. He broke in to send a message.
I don't know what that message would be, but I guess he tried?
@@TheWispGuy "It's not about flowers. It's about sending a message."
- Joker Kong (probably)
3:40 the Kirby series has taught a very valuable lesson, it’s to be afraid of butterflies, be very afraid 🦋 ⚔️
A game and watch video actually sounds amazing. Its always surprisingly interesting to hear you talk about the original LCD and the gallery games
You‘ve really played every version of every Donkey Kong arcade game! I guess you can call yourself the real King Kong!
Great video, Goomba!
👍💖💕💕
I will never forget you Stanley! The big N might, but I never will!
I'm kinda sad that Donkey Kong 3 got forgotten. Think about how cool it'd be if Stanley shows up in a DKC game.
Glad to see you are no longer stuck between two pipes.
I think they should re-do some of these old games... Usually I'm against those sorts of remakes, but these had some really cool ideas that could work really well if done right.
Keep on gaming, goomba.
I've been watching for at least a decade. Can't remember exactly how long. Nice to see how far your channel has evolved.
Fun fact about Stanley the bug man did you know that Stanley is mario’s long lost cousin
There was also a Warioware Touched minigames where you needed to blow at the console like a madman to beat DK
Damn, Hudson just went insane.
I've always loved the weird screens in the PC port, it gives off such an unsettling vibe that feels like you're playing something you shouldn't, like DK3 was put over something else.
Also unironically I vouch for DK 3, it's a really fun game (even if it's repetitive), though I'm actually surprised the NES port is the best one, I'll have to try it again sometime.
The arcade version also has a 2 player mode. You just hit the 2 player start button. That's a standard feature on arcade games.
Now all we need is a video covering every single version of the Popeye arcade game to complete the Early 80's Nintendo Arcade Family (which is a name I just came up with, btw)!
Can I just say that I love how you've captured Shigeru Miyamoto's pop art style in the thumbnail? Because that is just awesome. I don't know how to do something like that accurately... you make it look like it could have been drawn by Shiggy himself.
Can we all agree that Donkey Kong 3 (Arcade version) has the most gruesome death for its time? The player GETS EATEN ALIVE BY BUGS!
There's a plug-and-play bootleg version of this game with a giant spider instead of DK, and it's terrifying.
The Sharp X1 version is mix of a Fever Dream & Creepypasta
was not mentally prepared for the hudson soft dk3 alien lore, and this is coming from someone who was prepared for urban yeti.
Always love to see your uploads in my notifications, but this format too?? Hell yeah!!
Donkey Kong 3 PC is my favorite obscure mario obscure game, the backgrounds could actually be seen as art
Great video, and thanks for a decade of good stuff
22:46 I hope you have enough money to withstand a SLAPP suit.
All this Game & Watch talk through the Arcade binges gives me hope you do a video on playing Every Game & Watch game there is
i know that every last episode of a show has no intro, but i just didn't expect it on a yt commentary series about DK, it stunned me
Watching this completely satisfied any cravings I had to play these games. I can see why this one didn’t catch on 😅
19:39 I believe the reason they didn't is because Greenhouse came out before Donkey Kong 3 in 1982. In fact, it's often stated that Donkey Kong 3 itself was based on the Game & Watch game.
Ah yes stanley the bugman the man the icon
Its always a pleasure to see TLG upload a new vid. Keep it up lad!
Getting eaten by bugs reminded me that underneath all the gloss and family friendly aesthetic, Nintendo game devs have liked to sneak dark themes into their games throughout the companies history.
DK3 rarely gets talked about. Its a interesting game concept. It reminds me of Space Invaders. Shame Stanley's lost in Nintendo Jail.
My day is always better when there is a new Lonely Goomba video to watch! Great video as always!
There should have been more versions. Imagine it on the Atari 2600. Sure, it would suck terribly, but it would be so funny to see. Maybe the bugs would have been 4 pixels at most.
The life lost sound effect sounds so ominous. It's actually kind of creepy!
If you're willing to keep going with this series, id love to see how all the different versions of dig dug go in terms of stuff. Maybe even including some things like the sequel or mr driller
I remember trying out a bunch of arcade games in a 60-in-1 a few years ago. If I didn't like the game, I would try being completely still and waiting for the game to kill me. You know that of course Donkey Kong 1 will pretty much instantly kill you if you loiter around, but 3 will send the bugs dancing around in a formation for something like half a minute until they begin attacking the player. I think that's a pretty good microcosm of why the game failed so badly.
They better put those aliens and a nuclear explosion in the next donkey kong country game
i'd love a goomba reviews every (or at least some) game and watch games
Please do every game and watch!!! I love the game and watch games, and this video format, so that's an instant watch for me. Might get a little tedious but hey, it'd be cool to have all the games in one video yeah?
Eyyyyy I am happy this series is finishing here! Glad to see all major OG Nintendo arcade games done in this series! (Unless I forgot one)
I actually thought there we're more versions of Donkey Kong 3, than what there is. Clearly, the game never had a lot of love. Probably because it was released during the Video Game Crash of 1983.
Anyway, could you please do every single version of Donkey Kong Country, as that game had a lot more versions than the others in the Country Series? 🦧🦍
Or alternatively, could you Review all the SNES Donkey Kong Country games one day please? My favourites the 2nd game. 🦍🦧
Many thanks & great work once again. 👍👍
I guess Cranky is so…cranky to be a coping mechanism after the crazy shit he saw on the PC version.
I felt I was tripping out the moment the video suddenly went into science fiction with the aliens
I remember playing the NES version of all the donkey kong games on the Wii's virtual console as a kid. I don't remember donkey kong 3 very well, probably cause it wasn't really a platformer and that was 90% of what I played back then. But I do remember donkey kong jr was the one I always replayed. I didn't even know the pie level existed until I watched your video lol. It's very interesting to see all the different versions given how many different consoles there were back then. Love the videos and you're a huge inspiration for me making my own content!
I’m still trying to decipher what was going through the mind of Hudson Soft when their made their DK3 port. Did the executives think it was boring and demand a needlessly grandiose story? Was it meant to be normal but they had to use assets from some weird cancelled Sci-Fi game? We’ll probably never know.
I used to watch you all the time when I was younger, and I just run into your channel out of the blue.
Oh yeah, I've played (and uploaded a video of) Donkey Kong 3: Dai Gyakushuu for the PC-88 and it can be very annoying to have to be very spot on where you hit DK but otherwise not a bad game. It also has bonus stages.
Thank you for this lovely video!
It’s even more sad how this game doesn’t have that much recognition that the fact Stanley the Bug man did not have a cameo in the Mario movie
Donkey Kong 3 is one of my favorite arcade games!
I’d love to see a Game and Watch ranking video!
I'd absolutely be down for a Game and Watch ranking some day! I had a few of the games on DSiWare as a kid, so I get a little nostalgic from em
It would be awesome to see the Game and Watch Gallery games. I loved those as a kid. They were fun but I loved seeing the "world of Mario" in a time where you didn't regularly see all of the characters interacting with each other. That and I've always just flat out liked GBC graphics.
Always a happy day when the Goomba uploads!.
The. Great counter attack for sharp x1 think I’ve played it on pc-88
Yo thank you
Yeah I tried to get that version to work, which I did mostly. But it seemed identical
I grew up with a pc-88 as a kid
I WAS WAITING FOR HIM TO MENTION THOSE UNHOLY DK3DG BACKGROUNDS IN HIS DONKEY KONG VIDEOS AND ITS FINALLY HERE!!!!!!
Aliens, of course there would be aliens in a Donkey Kong game.
The fact aliens have been in two DK games now is funny
Next video should be "Ranking EVERY Wii Sports Resort Game"
To be honest, growing up Donkey Kong 3 was my favourite of the non-Rare Donkey Kongs. Of course, I played it on Nesticle and it wasn't my Christmas gift
The first time I ever played a donkey Kong 3 was playing The Game & watch gallery 4 version. Now I didn't grow up with it. I grew up in the 90s and even though in the 2000s I definitely played the GBA I wasn't even aware of any of the Game & watch gallery games. I forget when this was but at some point when I was playing my DS I was at a game store I think it was high-tech Game center which was an old used game store we used to have in my hometown of Santa Rosa that was very well loved but went out of business in the late 2000s, but anyways I got Game & watch gallery 4 for the GBA there and was playing on my ds. I didn't learn until way later about the bug spray thing for the actual original donkey Kong 3 several years later. It goes on the prove exactly what you said at the end of the video with how nobody really knew about the game or at least it was just not as common.
The Lonely Goomba playing Donkey Kong? Hell yeah
instant watch, I thoroughly enjoy these primate videos. I will continue praying for Urban Yeti 2
The next Donkey Kong related things you can do are either the Donkey Konga games, or every version of the Donkey Kong Country games.
