I attended NAMM for years starting in 1982. They had so many giveaways that I needed to make multiple trips to my car to unload. Met many more famous musicians at the booths! Alice Cooper, Tom Scholtz, Van Halen, Tiron Porter, Carlos Santana, Lee Sklar, Floyd Sneed, etc.

Having attended before the pandemic and after, it definitely isn't where it was - YET. However, this year was far and away a bigger turnout than we've seen since 2020.
I had a small booth this year with a couple of other companies, and we were constantly busy. It was a good time.
I imagine that these larger companies have been unsure about making a commitment to spend a ton on a booth when they aren't sure if the attendance justifies it. I believe next year or even 2026 will be years to watch and see how things go. Maybe next time, I'll get to see you in person!

That's because they opened it to the public and anyone can go. Before it was more regulated and an opportunity for industry professionals and buyers to explore and invest etc.
Edit: I looked into it more and it wasn't the entire general public, but influencers/social media/content creators and students

@@xanderraymondcharleslast year was definitely smaller than prior years . . . but it was much larger than the first event NAMM had after the pandemic loosened up a bit . . . and the UA-camrs who were there last year that I know said there were in fact noticeably more companies and action this year, even without the big brands. Being 30% larger overall this year is a big amount no matter which companies attend. I would be more worried if I heard NAMM was smaller than last year, but being a much larger percentage than last year is a giant deal. That shows major growth.
I do agree that the purpose of NAMM is evolving, though - it’s very unlikely that the big brands will return unless NAMM gives them a major reason to do so. Btw, it’s BS about Fender/Gibson (and all their brands) not showing up to NAMM. Gibson probably spent MORE money on Red Carpet style an event in LA - they had to make all the effort to ship their stuff, pay for a fancy venue and food, pay staff and board members travel/lodging, etc. They still could have showed up at NAMM when they apparently paid 6 figures for their own LA based event that wasn’t terribly far from the NAMM venue. As for Fender and its brands, their HQ/factory is located close to the NAMM venue - a few rental trucks and asking some staff to report there would have relatively easy for them as compared to some of the other big brands. Paying for a booth, even if it’s not as large as past years, is a drop in the bucket for a company of that size when they are practically right near the venue. By not showing, both companies are sending a message to the guitar community that isn’t a positive one - like they are too good to be involved and don’t need it. But thing is, there’s tons of competition and customers alienating those brands. I don’t think they can afford not to go, and that attitude eventually going to catch up with them.
I guess time will tell! This is a subject where people are opinionated for sure! I love hearing all the cases for the future of NAMM, and you always make a compelling one!

you are correct. It is dead. It used to be comic con for guitar people, with rock stars walking around everywhere, artist signings left and right and yes the Dean room was always amazing back when they had Mustaine. Now there are less guitar companies going than even the last 2 years, and hardly any artist signings. Ernie Ball is 1/4 of what it used to be and only Ibanez and ESP are the same size. So many amp companies havent gone for a few years now also.....just a bummer because it used to be amazing

  • @NickWebbSax
    @NickWebbSax 4 місяці тому +1

I reckon it'll go full circle. It used to be companies and the people who sell. No general public, few UA-camrs could get in unless they were directly involved with a store or brand.
It'll go back to being a place for the merchants to go and meet their suppliers and almost go behind closed doors- sales meetings etc, then everyone will feel like they want to be there again, then they'll compete to want to be sold by more stores, so it'll get more elaborate...

Trade shows in general are a dying breed. To me as a small business owner for 20 years its simple, the cost to have a booth and the maximum exposure you get from foot traffic pales in comparison to other mediums like UA-cam. It's just not worth it. Your channel is essentially a NAMM show. You feature new products, demo it for us and have a footprint of 85k viewers and growing. Who needs NAMM when I got you! You provide valuable insight, it's a controlled non-noisy environment, you actually take the time to comment back as best as you can, and you are free to the consumer...no ticket needed. Done and done! Keep up the good work buddy!

cost have risen in everyday life so greatly that these once "staple" large brands wont outlay the budget to advertise at such events as other media outlets can get MORE information out with much lower costs. sorry to say but this "Brick and Mortar" approach is going to be more difficult when profits are greatly reduced due to skyrocketing costs.. we see it in other industries as well. Many corporations indicate that the SAME CROUD who are already valued users show up and less NEW potential markets or outlets.. However, for the LITTLE guys, if done on a small scale they can get some much needed exposure to get their brands out in a bigger market worldwide in some cases.. so pros and cons all around.. !!! Nice job Ray

Boutique showcase seems the best way for it to go since those are the companies that need the exposure the most. I totally understand that the big guys probably have proof in their data that their own marketing and events might be more beneficial than an elaborate mobile booth. Kiesel took the most advantage of this in my opinion having their fan fest during NAMM and it’s only 1 hour away. Super smart in my opinion.
I will continue to support NAMM and be excited to check out innovations in person. I think it’s the best opportunity for people like you and me(I stream on other platforms) to spread the word about new companies and new products from companies that aren’t well known.
I think eventually those companies elevating their products will be very beneficial to the market overall and we will likely see some of the big guys come back if they start losing market share. Only time will tell.
Good insights. Hope to meet you next year if you come back.

social media actually ruined the the impact NAMM would provide. wether that was a new upcoming release or seeing/catching up with a rep or musician you hadn't heard from in a while and wanted to chat and catch up with. the COST of the booths is the second thing ruining NAMM (and cons in general), the organization needs to entice the manufactures to come back in a BIG way somehow. the money the name con brings to that area (even with disney next-door) is big for the business around there.

I credit the decline to one part global shutdown, one part booming content creators. The global shutdown is obvious, but there’s been a massive uptick in social media personalities that no matter what level of show manufacturers do (NAMM or personal shows) all content creators are gonna cover the new stuff for the year. Like you said, why spend so much money on shipping, renting the floor space, and whatever is needed to setup the booth. We’re in the same age group, I think same age actually, and I remember the NAMM videos you’re talking about. I gushed every year. But now there’s not as much of a need for it if everyone online is going to spread the word whether or not they do the show. It’s not what I grew up watching, but having gone for my first time this year too (flew in from CT cause I got an invite from a guitar company), I think it still has its place. And I certainly hope it stays cause I would love to go again next year. I met some of of my buddies I haven’t seen in a long time, made some new friends from across the world, and got to meet some of my guitar idols/inspirations. I see the social interaction as one of the defining moments of NAMM and personally having had plenty of that, I left mostly fulfilled. My one gripe is that I couldn’t spend more than the one day there.

100% agree. Seeing what it was before covid, and now after, the vibe is way toned down. Plus on the video games side of things, E3 is no more as well.
I also hold the opinion that guitar companies really aren't trying new things anymore; there were some cool things announced like the multiscale evertune, the new tremolo bridge being designed by Rick Toone, and one or two other gear advancements BUT other than that.... it's kinda just like, yep. More strats. More teles. More LPs. A couple cool beginner guitars and nice boutique showcases BUT it's kinda just becoming "same shit different year" which is boring
We need INNOVATION. Just my 2c

It's open for the public which is a good thing, but I think it's going to be more like Comic-Con for gear nerds, instead of an industry only, elite type of event. It won't be just for the well to do people looking to buy a "Greeny". I'm all for it being open to the public because people like me who love gear and love guitar can finally go check something like that out.

Present their products first with youtubers. They can save millions of dollars. UA-cam could make a whole lot more money. And do a heck of a lot better job presenting their products than they you.
