Kestrel Narrowly Avoids Red Kite | Discover Wildlife | Robert E Fuller

- Thankfully Apollo the kestrel has his wits about him and manages to flee before this red kite swoops in.
This male kestrel has a nest at Ashwood, but recently he's been visiting the feeding post here at Fotherdale Farm, where he faces fierce competition for food.
Watch the way he suddenly lifts his head when he senses danger and, thankfully, flies away before the red kite swoops down to try and snatch the food.
Red kites can be aggressive and will attack kestrels.
Date filmed: May 10, 2024

Stay Safe Apollo 🙏
🙏
Hope Apollo is ok.
So happy Apollo noticed it up in the sky and got out of there! Still tough to watch
Oh my goodness did not realize how big a kite was! Close call!
I just looked it up and learned Red kites are as big as a Buzzard or Red-tailed hawk.
Me neither
Bigger than a buzzard
We can have as many as 24 circling low over our small village some days and there is a red kite nest on my daily dog walk She is still brooding at the moment They often follow the farmers ploughing and hay making Fascinating to watch them swoop down and land A few buzzards around as well but never seen them follow the plough
@@sheenamoffat6703 the kites are after the worms churned up by the the tractor. The buzzards aren't bothered for worms
Take care and stay safe Apollo
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
That's what happens... paradise.. gets invaded by other beautiful creatures that don't always see eye to eye.
Hope all of your birds and critters stay safe this season.
Wow! That Kite totally ignored the free food still on the post from Apollo too.
I seen this when it happened. I almost had a heart attack. Please stay safe Apollo! 🙏
Wow, that was a quick get away.
i didn't think a red kite would eat a kestrel but there it is.
Opollo knew it was there the whole time he was to nimble .love the way he just darted out of way buzzed up high to look what it was so cool.
Between 10,000 and 100,000 British Birds are killed by Turbine blade strikes annually in the UK 🇬🇧
Birds, especially sea birds are fooled into thinking that Turbines are a potential landing spot .
😢
Apollo buddy stay safe 🥺
Wow, good thing it was watching. Thank you.
Birds never stop watching❤️
Oh my goodness! So happy the huge Red Kite was unsuccessful. Sadly, I have always suspected Willow and Jeff were 'disappeared' by a Red Kite, and possibly Barney and others, too. I know they are beautiful and they have to eat, but .... sheesh! Had one flying over my garden for hours yesterday - they really are something amazing to behold though.
The post is q dangerous spot for kestrels with that kite around
Wonderful video of two Very different predatory birds. It Really shows how big a Kite is.😮❤❤😊
Wow the kite flew off like a dragon compared to the size of the kestrel
Apollo needs to be more vigilant now. TFS!
Now hats what I call a close call
I love that eerie call of the red kite stunning birds
I didn't realize how much bigger kite's were!
Yes huge in comparison with a 5.5 foot wing span
My town is a stronghold for Red Kites, reintroduced to the location after being extinct in the area for decades, very few Buzzards round here, seems the Kites may have outcompeted them, I've seen a dozen in a day and in recent months they've been growing very brave, swooping after Crows and Jackdaws instead of just fleeing
GEESH, APOLLO!!! 😮 🦅😮
BE CAREFUL!!! ❤ ❤ ❤
Apollo doesn't miss a trick! ❤
robert Efuller you are beast😊
Careful Apollo! You Daredevil! So relieved he is alright! FOURTH COMMENT!
Amazing video, thanks for showing us the beautiful nature.
Wow the red kite is much bigger beautiful birds
Apollo, God watch over you 🙏
❤️😍Most Beautiful landscape!!!
This is also how we lost our precious Jeff. He was the male kestrel that was Jenny’s mate. There’s many videos of Jeff.
Intense! 😍🥺🤩😁👍
I wonder if the Kites went after the BO Females who disappeared in the past years.
I always suspected they might have. Willow, Barney and Jeff would never have left, being totally imprinted there.
@@Blue24Osprey, the kite definitely got Jeff. It was on video that he was targeted just like Apollo. The first time he got away. The next day he was never seen again.
@@kimberlydodd8559 I'm still sad. I know the Kites have to eat, but sheesh - lovely wonderful home loving Jeff.😔Thank you for confirming, much appreciated. Probably got Willow too. When you get to understand these creatures personalities, it seems a pity to lose them.
The kite was after the food not the kestrel. It grabbed the food at the end. I watched a kite last night chasing a rook because it had food.
So lovely to see a beautiful bird like this not a thing you see every day ❤️ ♥️ 💕 so beautiful
I thought it might be Apollo! I've never heard of a kite before, let alone a red one. They're pretty big!🙏💜🙏
They are a well beloved bird in 🏴 🏴 🏴 🇳🇱 and Black Kites, though uncommon here 🇬🇧 are adored in other areas of Europe
Oh, Apollo....
Yeah Apollo❤
Was expecting a kid flying a red kite.
is there a dead bird on that post? there are some feet pointing upwards and not moving
It's kestrel food
Yep! That feeding post (as well as a few other spots in Robert's garden) is stocked with day old dead chicks that are a byproduct of the poultry industry - It's something of a supplement to the local wildlife's diets (often birds of prey like you see here on this post, but other stocks are often visited by the stoats as well, off the top of my head) and helps incentivize them to stick around in the area and end up on Robert's cams set up by the feeding posts as well.
Thank you love your work.
Good Day 🇦🇺
That kite is HUNGRY!
Apollo is the Himbo in the relationship. He looks like he's all for show, but when it comes to it, he can hold his own in a brawl! Look at him timing his departure!
I don’t think the kite was interested in Apollo? They are scavengers, it wanted what Apollo was eating🦅
Red kites are not just scavengers, I’ve seen them take ducklings, goslings and young crows. I’ve even seen them bring fish into the nest! They also attack and kill other birds of prey to eliminate competition in a territory
@@RobertEFuller well blow me down
Apollo is also a very small BOP ( bird of prey.) He doesn't stand much of a chance against a Kite.
@@AngelsonEarth69 👍🏼
His talons went for the dead bird when Apollo flew away. I think his eye was more on that. Of course, they'd eat a kestrel, but I think he was just wanting that, or else Apollo would've been dead.
Greetings from Canada thanks for sharing this video really enjoyed your excellent camera work
WHERE DID THAT KITE COME FROM!?
Nice
The kite may look formidable & large , it’s more of a scavenger bird of prey, the kestrel wasn’t really in any danger .
Brilliant video photography,
Thank you. Last few years I’ve been filming red kites at their nest and I’ve found that they very much hunt, bringing in ducklings, goslings and young crows into the nest. The pair I followed even brought in fish from a nearby lake. I’ve also often seen them attack and kill other birds of prey, eliminating the competition in the territory.
I'm with Bzz22. Kestrel never in danger. Kite was trying to scare it off not hunt it. It may take chicks but they're weak hunters. I'd be interested to know what birds of prey you've witnessed them killing.
Around our way (Yorkshire) the crows harass the kites relentlessly around nesting season, also the local peregrine falcons will join the kites in a thermal when hunting. Carrion, road kill and people leaving scraps out are there main food sources, as said they are weak hunters.
In my area Red Kites have grown very confident, see them initiating fights with crows rather than running from them now
He saw it coming a mile off
But when they go near a jackdaw nest they fight back
Shwoooooooo....Shwoooooooo...Shw'-shw'-shwoooo
Was that a second kite towards the end?
Yes
Nice try Mr Kite! Stick to what you’re good at buddy. Scavenging. 😂
Oh my i thought that was an old one of Jeff. Could this be the same Red Kite from last time? Are the birds in danger again?😢
Ref is not putting food on the post during the day right now because they are targeting Apollo. Yes this is how we lost Jeff.
@@kimberlydodd8559 thank you.
Whether it's his demanding wife or attacking kites, Apollo has it rough.
ya figure thats a dead kestrel in there already?
I would need to see more footage to determine who was in the wrong.😅
❤️❤️
Mooie foto’s
As a person who grew up In suburban area with a lot of green and bush. Loved birds. Excuse my ignorance, I know what a kestrel is and have seen. What's a kite and is this the English country side? Apologies if I've got it wrong and offended anyone. Apollo?
Yes, this is English countryside, Red Kites were reintroduced after going nearly extinct about 30 years ago, they are usually solely scavengers but desperate times call for desperate measures, they are larger In wingspan than Buzzards and Goshawks but less formidable, I believe they are our 3rd largest Bird of prey after the Golden Eagle and White Tailed Eagle
I've seen a crow have a red kite on his toes lol.
Never any danger he saw that coming in plenty of time
I wish the Red kites would go after the Jackdaws instead.
Me too!
Omg I love Jackdaws they are so cheeky, they have so much personality.
How did you manage to kill the rodents placed on the feeding post?
I purchase them in bulk - they arrive frozen.
😳😳😳
It sure looks like that's a upside down tree the nest is in almost like it's a big foot marker.......has anyone else see this ????

What in the world 🌍 just happened
Typical kite,,, a thief and a bully would rather steal from others before working for it's own dinner !
Apart from the one hunting over my garden for hours, yesterday afternoon, catching pigeons and starlings.
Hi , kites are stunning birds of prey , they do hunt .
😱
