Kestrels of Fotherdale
Filmed using cameras hidden inside their owl box, known as Sycamore Stump and situated in my garden at Fotherdale, Yorkshire, this film takes you through their breeding year as they court and raise chicks.
The fight for survival
Watch this kestrel pair fight brutal battles to secure their nest site --and their eggs - and see them fight for the survival of all six chicks in this heart-warming tale of falcon survival.
To raise six healthy chicks
And watch as the kestrel chicks grow and find their wings, eventually flying free to begin a life independently in the wild.

I love the part when, confronted with these new creatures, the dad lays the food on his babies like, "I know this is for you. Somehow. Do you...do you eat it? WHERE IS YOUR MOTHER?"
That's exactly what happened I think
So...at about 23 min in, when he gets the chicks to put on their identification rings, is this what getting abducted by aliens might be like?

And then the next season he learned how to feed them all by himself after his mate disappeared. RIP Mr. Kes, you truly were the GOAT.

You might live in the “middle of nowhere” as such but you seem to be right in the midst of a totally dramatic soap opera of nature.. Excellently captured on film again btw. Thank you, this is truly rare footage that none of us would usually witness.

The male trying to feed them is cute he’s like “come on babies why aren’t you eating it” he gets an A for effort and attempt

Helping them was high risk and but we pulled it off and amazing all 6 fledged

Those early attacks on the nest were so scary. I was so relieved that all six chicks were safe and grew to fledging. These parents were awesome in their feeding and protection of the nest……a happy ending indeed!

it was a rocky start for Mr. and Mrs. Kes, but I'm happy to hear that a complete batch of new kestrels grew up to be feisty and healthy new hunters. I'm excited to see at least one from these batch returning and starting a life of their own. The couple kestrels did a wonderful job working together and raising all 6 chicks. Also, your efforts has really helped the chicks survive!

The kestrel eggs are as beautiful as the feathers of the parents.

Poor Mrs. Kes! I'd read that she'd had a number of confrontations in the breeding seasons leading up to the current one. But I suspect a confrontation like the one with the Jackdaw would have left deep emotionally traumatic scars on any bird, with or without other serious confrontations before or after. Whatever happened to her this season must have been more than she could face again.
Hopefully, she survived and is out there someplace quiet learning how to let it go and start life again.
the Bird property market is more brutal than the human one, Mr Owl needs a good attorney, maybe a Golden Eagle. Amazing film

Outstanding photography and story telling. I never realised before watching your educational videos how hard it is for raptors to survive and keep their eggs/chicks safe. I had never considered the inter species rivalries and competition for nesting sights. As I said, outstanding thank you.

Totally agree!! Jus love to see how d story of this kestral family unfolded b4 our very eyes. I've watched a few videos on d bald eagles bringing up their brood of only 2-3 chicks,and how brutal those chicks can b to each other, esp d eldest one towards d younger ones at meal times while d parents look on. Yet this kestral mom took care of all 6 chicks with fairness and d chicks didn't try to kill each other! Such wonder!! Tq so much for d show, love and fascinated by it!! 💕💞💕

It's fantastic to see six kestrels fledge. I hope they all survive to their first birthday.
Female Kestrel: lays eggs, broods, hunts food, has no babysitter, feeds chicks, regularly fights intruders, sacrifices sleep, struggles to keep chicks warm
Male Kestrel to new born chick: Eat the lizard
Actually☝️the male and female kestrels take turns hunting and brooding. Though it seems like one is obviously better at handling chicks than the other lol.
The female Kestrel is a true trooper 💪😌

Those are such great videos!! I usually have a problem keeping the focus on videos longer than 10 minutes but this is so well-paced and narrated that I didn't even realize it was more than 30 minutes long.
The wonderful Mr. and Mrs.Kes and their super brood of six. Interesting to see Ghost and Willow the barn owls were after that site too.

Growing up in jamaica I used to enjoy watching the kestrels, such beautiful and graceful birds
That was more high drama and danger than you'd see in most HBO shows, and it's just another day in the life for these birds. Cheers to Mr and Mrs Fotherdale Kestrel for making it through all that with their kids.

Really, it's because of your commentary, the type of footage, the music and professional video editing. I've never seen documentaries that cover local wildlife activities like this. Wonderful narration and amazing footage. I was blessed to have a male Kestrel land in my backyard in Las Vegas and take a bath in between my pool and spa waterfall. It took me two hours of research before I found out what kind of bird it was. So beautiful! Lucky me!

Brilliant Robert amazing to watch. Last year I Was privileged to watch a pair successfully raise 3 chicks and all fledged.
I can't imagine bringing up six kids/teens in a home that's equivalent to a hotel suite. Imagine all the bickering! "Mom, Jenny stepped on my wing!" "She started it! She took my lizard!" "It's not fair! Why can't I go out and hunt like you and Dad do?"
The kestrel pair have more patience than I could ever have.

@@spiritsjoy They will not be wild. I work at a wildlife centre. We exchange birds with other organisations every year. All legal and guided by professionals. Learning falconry with my employer and we picked the Kestrel as our first bird. These are not pets and should never be bought as one. Also never take an animal out of the wild unless you are willing to take care of it every day for the next 30 years or so.
