Mine works without lifting bonnet.

mine came up straight away no double cancel

Normally it requires a fixed time from the last engine switch off to let you check the digital level. After that period it does come up straight away. This is a shortcut for a check without the waiting time for instance if the oil's been changed and the engine run to circulate it then a quick check to see how much, if any is needed to get it to max.
