ScotRail Class 156 - Standard Class Review (A Snowy Trip to the Scottish Highlands!)

- Hi, and welcome to the channel's Christmas special - sort of. This video is about a journey on a ScotRail Class 156 from Glasgow Queen Street to Oban, in the Scottish Highlands. This involves travelling over the West Highland Line, which is widely regarded as one of the most scenic routes in Europe. Just to break the illusion of Christmas, this video was filmed in mid-November. :)
ScotRail have recently been refurbishing these units, introducing new seats of the Fainsa Ironing Board style, but unlike most other applications of this product, I found the interior to be quite welcoming. These trains were once expected to be replaced by Class 158s around now, but that idea appears to have been cancelled, and these units seem set to continue for the forseeable.

Recently travelled from Fort William to Glasgow and I loved every second! I didn't even notice the seats, I was too busy staring out of the window in awe. Truly one of the world's greatest railway journeys.
I have done this trip before on a 156, I really enjoyed it, both the scenery and the DMU. I would definitely do it again, and I highly recommend this trip for train enthusiasts, as well as a snowy Scottish summer holiday on the Isle Of Mull!
Another well done, entertaining video😊 As you said, beautiful scenery (love the Highland lines!), made even more so with the snow on the ground and autumn colors still on many trees.
I've just done the Glenfinnan-Glasgow leg of that journey. 4 1/2 hours on the same seats, but I didn't find them too uncomfortable. Maybe I've just got an iron bum...
Great video. Reminded me of when I lived in Blanefield (on the closed Blane Valley Railway from Glasgow to Aberfoyle) and used to get the 6.30am train from Queen Street to either Oban (to visit Mull) or Mallaig. It was a day out on the train, enjoying the beautiful scenery, with perhaps a swim in the sea at Morar (where Carol Kirkwood, the BBC weather lady, comes from) or a ferry ride at the end of the rail journey. Those seats are very uncomfortable if you're travelling all the way to Mallaig!
I love a good class 156 😍
Love the 156 it’s my favourite train ever I was lucky last year I got one with the original seats which are way more comfy from oban down to Glasgow
Great video, thank you. I like the 156s. Noisy but solid and reliable. The 158s don’t have the necessary clearance for all WH routes so I think the 156s will be around for a while yet.
Merry Christmas nice journey
The parcel you saw is most likely a stock transfer from the main catering supplies at Queen St to the satellite depot in Oban.
Scottish Highlands is amazing and scenic
Would love to do this journey, both for the amazing scenery and for the pretty decent DMU.
You should try the Gerald of wales 🏴 I heard it’s best to do it in summer and first class includes 3 course meal
Not been up the whl on returb 156s. My local lime is East Kilbride line so well used to the, now.
You can’t go wrong with a good class 156, paired with the west highland line what else would you ever need?
Great video showing west Highland line have you done the Inverness to Edinburgh line by scotrail watched a documentary on it world's most scenic railways and it seems quite beautiful
The line still seems to have jointed tracks.
I agree with the class 156 not being suitable for a lengthy journey. I mean it takes over 5 hours to reach Mallaig and that’s closer to Glasgow than Aberdeen. And the trains that used to serve Aberdeen the class 170s took 2 hours 40 mins. Maybe the class 170 should take over this route
The 158s are louder than 156s and the pacer bus
Why does it sound like an 801 hitachi departing lol
