Great and useful research that offers important and practical insights to land an ID job in 2021. I'm a big fan of all your work :). Thank you!
Thanks so much, Aggie :). I'm happy to help!
I would like to see how to get a job without experience. As a career switcher it's hard to get my foot in the door, so this would be extremely helpful!
Ok, great! The short answer is to create a good portfolio with concept projects that show off your skillset, but I am sure there is more that I could share in a video on the topic :D
@@DevlinPeckYT Thanks Devin, the barricade I keep running into is getting ID experience opportunities aka "projects" to build a portfolio. I believe showcasing some actual jobs that are open in LinkedIn and showcasing here's "how" a portfolio will help with that. I've reviewed various ID job details and altho I may be remotely qualified; it can be overwhelming how to structure experience to match ID fundamentals.
@@vbrekk Interesting! So basically addressing each of the qualifications / requirements and explaining how a portfolio would build your credibility with each requirement?
@@DevlinPeckYT Spot on and even moreso ways to find real world ID experience opportunities. It's understandable to build a portfolio but where does one begin/ start to look for experience? That's the question within the tower of terror.
@@vbrekk Yes, that's the other angle I would take. Could always do some volunteering, internships, ID-adjacent roles, etc., but I'm more of a fan of devoting time to the portfolio so you can get that heavy-hitting, high-paying ID role right out of the gate :D (the ones that say they "require" 5 years of experience)
Please do a video on how to gain experience! And suggestions about how to build a portfolio without any experience!
Thanks for the suggestion, Brian! This may be what you’re looking for: ua-cam.com/video/z9T_DExI8ow/v-deo.html
Thank you Dev for the valuable info and insights. I am currently applying for many ID jobs so taking these elements into consideration may add credit to my application.
You’re welcome, Ahmed! I hope that this helps you with your job search 😊
yes please do a video about experience
Thanks Zara! I will add that to the list
I’d love to hear more about how to get more experience or how to build credibility if you don’t have a wealth of experience in the field already. I have a long career in learning and development but not much experience in terms of content development or instructional design.
Thank you for letting me know that you would find this helpful. I will definitely add this video to the list. What type of role would you like to pursue? A content dev role? The best next step would be to get a really solid handle on Storyline and storyboarding if so.
@@DevlinPeckYT I'm in the same situation. I have experience as HR generalist in Learning/Professional Development field, but not in learning design as is. Recruiters seek for people who already know how to build e-learning modules/experiences. Would be super useful to have an example of ANY e-learning course made by you (Any e-learning platform) with the explanation of how you made it (incl analysis, design, storyboarding, etc.). THANKS!
++ also explain how to use different learning models to design courses :)
@@Daria-up8tg Thanks for sharing your perspective here :). And yes, skills with the industry standard tools are definitely a pre-requisite for most ID roles at the moment.
@@DevlinPeckYT I can’t agree more!
Would love to know your advice on the best online courses to learn ID tools :)
Your videos are so helpful! Thank you for sharing this information!!
You're welcome! Thanks for the positive feedback :)
, you're welcome. It is great content and helps as I prepare to transition careers.
@@kellibolton2053 That’s wonderful! Which field are you transitioning from?
@@DevlinPeckYT, from teaching.
@@kellibolton2053 Nice! You're in good company :). There are many teachers joining the ID field at the moment.
Devlin, this was super helpful and I have decided to create a short explainer video asset for my portfolio on using the self-determination theory when developing Instructional design to fill that gap for hiring managers. I will likely do a TBT or mini-module on how I manage my projects as well since that was on the "skills lacking" list. Since I don't have a huge amount of experience I think adding this to my portfolio will really help my hiring prospects.
Hi Wendy! Adding well-done projects to your portfolio (with corresponding write-ups) should definitely help. I am glad to hear that this video was helpful, and I hope that you will share the link with us when you've added the deliverables you've mentioned :)
@@DevlinPeckYT totally, writing the outline now. Thanks again.😊
@@illusionarylives You're welcome :)
Hi Devlin, would really love detailed content on professional experience and building credibility with formal education as instructional designer which you were speaking about in the video. I am looking forward to turn my training career into instructional designer career
Ok, Neelam. Thanks for letting me know. I will aim to release a video about getting a job w/o professional experience this Tuesday. Best of luck with your transition...hopefully my content will help :)
Mock project is only reasonable in my view when a portfolio is not available. If the hiring manager is going to use the candidates portfolio as a litmus test of their capabilities, then it’s only fair that one who doesn’t have a portfolio provide something to compare the candidates equally.
Great point. I agree completely. That and when portfolios are very unclear about the role that people played in the project.
Dev this video was just as helpful as your other videos, I always find value in them, however, not sure what kind of video I would need. I have a portfolio, I have experienced (4+ yrs), I have even worked in the industry, however, I am not landing any opportunities. I am getting lots of interviews but not getting offer letters.
Hi Romeoh! Thanks for supporting the content. It sounds like a good sign that you're landing interviews. How do you think that they're going? Have you seen the interview content on the channel? There's a mock interview that we did with Cara North and Aleks Drobik that you may want to see.
Also, it may have something to do with your portfolio. Have you gotten much feedback on your portfolio? Do you feel confident in it? Let us know :D
@@DevlinPeckYT Thanks Dev I have heard good feedback about the interview, however, I watched your video on how to design a portfolio and followed it but still no job offers, not sure what it is.
@@RomeohRamone How about you share your portfolio site in the Slack community and see what feedback we can give? Here's a link to join if you're not in there already: www.devlinpeck.com/slack
@@DevlinPeckYT ok thanks Dev I'll do that, thanks again!
@@RomeohRamone you’re welcome! See you on Slack
It probably didn't come up in the survey, but I wonder what the etiquette is these days about following up with people who have interviewed you. I have heard a few people say that they receive feedback after interviews but this hasn't been the case for me. Granted, for ID specifically, I have had one interview so far LOL
Good question! It probably couldn't hurt but also probably isn't necessary. A request for feedback if you get turned down or following up to learn more about the timeline couldn't hurt.
I want looking job
Best of luck :)
