We need a reaction video from Sean! 😉 Maybe Sean could suggest on camera what you could have done differently with what you had. Hey at least you tried - Sean always tells us that we can all do it. I’m sure he failed at first. He still does. Look what he did to that girl’s guitar, lol. He needed to make a whole new neck cause he broke the headstock, right? Scarred method - most of the time it works, sometimes it fails. But above all, you make memories and have fun doing it, all frustrations aside, lol. You and your buddy will always have a good chuckle about this, but ya hung out together! I keep hoping to scrounge up money and/or parts to try something like this too. Looks like fun!
We all start somewhere brother, remember when you sounded like a cat scratching on the strings when you first started playing ? It was a good first try. Something to keep in mind, Fender and other bolt on necks sometimes have to be adjusted to straighten out the strings, this is done by loosening the neck mounting screws and either pushing or pulling on the head stock, once in line to the desired alignment hold it in place and tighten the screws. Or you could have simply received a crap body with the bridge holes misaligned. Either way, I am sure you will enjoy finishing the build, once you get better at it, it becomes like GAS, but I like to call it GBS (Guitar Building Syndrome) .
We have all been there Trey…just remember, you will never make the same mistakes again. Your next guitar will be closer to your liking! Hang in there! 2Yards.
Mate! I relate to this too much! 😂👌 I've had so many fails I can't count, still happens now too. 🙈 That's a sharp looking Guitar though 😎👌 Will be awesome once you get it all sorted 😀
The lesson learned is, don’t buy cheap stuff from amazon if you’re trying to build a guitar. Thanks for watching Steve. When it’s actually put together right this thing will be a behemoth of a guitar.
Even though this first go at a build didn't go as planned. We pick our selves up. Take the knowledge that we've gained. Do more research. And we get right back at it. Whether it means new parts or different parts. Or modifications. I believe this build will come together and in the end, since you're doing the work yourself. The gratitude and satisfaction Will outweigh any minor flaws. And after watching this, I cannot say I was not entertained by the content of real world , real people trying to accomplish something. That they have passion and love for. Keep your head up and trudge on Trey !!
the cheaper necks need a fret level usually. i got one of the reverse jackson ones for my king v and its not bad. i didnt level it, just put it on after cutting the heel down to shape with just a file lol. i feel your pain man. also, i usually put the strings on before drilling the neck to make sure its straight. i shim it later if needed. keep doing it man. you'll get it.
Yep, put a few strings on it to line up with the neck and then tighten away. Where you are now, try loosening the bolts with the strings on but slacked, and see if you can move the neck angle to get the E some space at the edge of the neck. Then retighten.
My first build I bought 3 necks. One I returned, one that went in the garbage and the final one for my Temu Strat build. We all have fails. You can always call on Sean for the save. When I had an issue with one build, I asked him, and he saved the build with his advice. Oh, and Metallor tuners on Amazon are better than Musiclily.
I really appreciate you sharing your first experience with building too. I basically threw like $140 in the garbage with the neck and body. I have a new fender body and that fender neck which should be a lot better anyway. Maybe I can get Sean to help me if it still turns out weird. Thanks for the suggestion on the tuners. I might have to get those.
@TreyShreddings I've used the Metallor tuners on 5 builds. Only one set I had to screw out the locking pin and tighten the little nut inside. The shipping must have been harsh coming in overseas and shaken them loose. There are no issues with tunability, even with using the tremolo and less expensive.
Hey Bro I've had to go back to the drawing board many times so don't sweat it. Get some titebond original and about a 20 gauge hypodermic needle suck some titebond in it and pick several places and insert it in the crack and fill as best you can and clamp it from side to side wait 24 hours before removing clamps. Use gloss black finger nail polish and a tooth pick or a pin to cover the crack...but don't ask how I know this trick 😂😂😂😂😂
Hey Trey,. Great video. Sorry it didn't go smother for ya. Looking forward to the follow up. Do your best buddy. You are patient. Much more than me. Good sense of humor
With locking tuners you just push the string through the hole tighten the locker then tune it up, cut the excess off. As far as the neck goes, it needs to be shimmed to one side to center the neck. That happens with low cost bodies.
I think you did great at least you tried that’s more than most can say don’t give up I think something was messed up with the body to make the strings not line up
Sorry for your loss, Trey. I'm doing a crazy build myself, never having built anything. If all goes right, it'll be a short scale lap steel. I ordered Obsidian, too, to keep it as simple as possible. Yikes, what have I done?😅😅
You know, I thought this was a simple build, but I was very, very wrong. The best thing you did was go with the obsidian wiring. That thing is awesome.
Before doing any of these types of builds, the first thing you need to do is make sure the neck and body will fit with no gaps in the pocket and the bridge and neck line up properly. Ask me how I know lol.
Trey. Next time you need a hand with something like that if Sean is not available I'm in St Petersburg. I'll gladly help out. Other than that nice to see you sparred no expense.
I have a Fender flat oval roasted neck. My 1992 MIM Strat got it cause the older MIM have small fret wire. Fender on Fender so perfect fit. Might I suggest guitar fetish XGP bodies. They are true to Fender specs. (In Sarasota too so you’ll get it quick) I’ve used them with licensed Fender necks (Mighty Mite) on several builds. Well, 3 to be exact. I’ve also done Fender MIM neck / full thickness Squier body combos. Matching the neck and body are key if you want to avoid issues. Also this is the time the full thickness body matters. lol
wowwzerrz bro! wild sheet hey! my gilmour tribute strat started life as a squier affy(05 model).... loads of "better budget" parts later i think i have a nice convincing example...i did have to swap out the neck however...stock one was a bit "buggery" from the git go...wild thing is it happens to be another "05" neck from another "affy strat"!
I learned to never buy a cheap neck off Amazon, this was exactly how my first strat build went, I now know that you line up the neck with both E strings attached before you drill the holes, and always see if parts fit when assembled before you install, looky here brother what you need is a chibson, don’t listen to the hater’s,I’ve wasted enough money on budget guitars only to be disappointed when compared to my three chibsons,a black angus young SG, a teal blue quilt top LP, and my first a cherry burst standard LP these chibson come the closest in feel ,looks and playability to the guitar it’s trying to copy, I tried everything from iyv ,,firefly, monoprice, silvertone, grote, redit and, while I like the guitars from these brands, chibsons just felt better in my hands,I’m a player,so I don’t care what’s on the headstock, all I know is a guitar that feels more authentic makes my playing better, I haven’t tried a chender from aliexpress yet, think they have a Gilmore, happy shredding peace out, black tape the logos bingo.
I’ll take, “What Makes Luthiers Cringe” for $1,000, Alex! 😂 ANYONE who has built guitars has gone through this, brother! In my experience, it never pays to buy cheap parts in the long run. 😢 PS: Why do you wrap strings with locking tuners? Just try pulling it straight, locking it down, and cutting it at the post! 🎸😃👍🏻
@@TreyShreddings yup me too. Not many 1st builds are fine instruments. I did the same thing on my 1st, with the guitar thickness. I ordered for the thicker Strats but my body was a bit thinner. Was a mess. After a few more mods tho, my son swiped it from me after “Master of Puppets” was on “Stranger Things”. He makes a bit of racket now and then, so I call it a win (that started as a bad loss). 🤷♂️🤘🏻
Well if nothing else, you've proved (and I'm sure that Sean will attest), that being both a shredder and a builder is near impossible. And you may want to get rid of that drill before the guitar building police show up at your door.
Well, drilling in the body work to get the electronics in. I never did drill through the guitar, but the body was so cheap and that ended up cracking. Should’ve just went with the right parts from the start that was my mistake.
We both know who can fix it for you but he's going to joke around at your expense and probably turn it into a video. Just don't let him mark it scarred.😮
