I guess back in the '80s kids were a lot respectful of their parents and hardly said a word when they got in trouble for doing something they weren't supposed to
@@jfassettx123 yup when Claire and Ciff brought her home from Baltimore....Vanessa thought she was gonna have a night of #BigFun.......it turned out to be anything BUT that! And her interrogation to Vanessa....as scary as it was.....was made even scarier when she yelled, "Rudy.....GO TO BED!!!!" And the icing on the cake was when she yelled for Vanessa to do the same!
That was a totally different situation lol Denise got mouthy, and some times a stern talking too is all you need. Vanessa got the Clair Huxtable version of a curse out because she lied about her whereabouts and put herself in a bad situation.
@Tiffany Morgan What Vanessa did was far more dangerous. Sneaking off to another state to go to a concert. Notice during the episode when Vanessa got drunk, she pretty much got off easy. Her parents didn't punish her b/c of the hangover.
Trust me. There are kids who can behave and perform better than their parents who just old enough but not wise. My father was in the insurance line for 20 years but he never protected his life or his family. Most of his clients were rich people who has no idea of insurance protection. He workout financial plans for them, their family and business but completely forgot about his own family and kids. That 's alright. At least with his 20 years experience, expertise and knowledge, he could have at least educated his children about insurance products to prepare them for a secured financial future. He knows a lot but his knowledge was no use for his own family. Now you know the reason why, i don't look up to him.
I love how Cliff asked if she wanted to go first. I think that really respectful in the husband wife dynamic. And I'm glad she went first because Claire laid it out
One of my favorite scenes ever! I loved seeing parents actually dealing with kids who needed PARENTS, not buddies. This is right up there with Vanessa and her buddies going to Baltimore to see The Wretched, and Claire's explosion. How many of us never got "Don't open your mouth!" "Answer me when I'm talking to you!" I hate for us to lose this show...I understand the problem...but, still...
+gerald geaf Yes, that's my other favorite moment on the show. When Vanessa lied and sneaked off to Baltimore; they come in at 5 AM. Claire's rant "Don't you talk back to me!" "Answer me when I talk to you, girl!!"...perfect Mom Moment. We all heard that in years past.
@@VideoFanatic02 of course it would be mild. In this one, Denise went to her parents, laid out her plan, suddenly had to deal with her parents' reservations, got a bit entitled, then Claire was able to bring her down a peg this way. Denise involved them the entire step of the way. Vanessa, on the other hand, lied to her parents, showed some incredibly bad judgement, and yet still didn't realize how severe what she did was when she tried to get them to punish her just so she could have it over with. Still, in either scenario, I hate to think what my mother (RIP) would have done. I'm 48 now and it still makes me shudder.
Superb writing, and acting, but you never felt like you were watching a sit com, it seemed like it was a real family you were watching, they were so well directed, and the standards that Mr.Cosby set in place as for how he wanted the family to be viewed by the audience was nothing short of perfect.
Damn! She was scary as hell and didn't even raise her voice. Me...I'd still be hollering at that child...That's the problem when a teen reaches 17 and 18. And that is how you stand your ground as a Parent. Claire did good because after putting missy in check, my hand would suddenly go in a swatting motion.
I agree. Sure the kids at some point were irresponsible, careless, rebellious, lied one way or anther. But the one thing they NEVER did was talk back and disrespect their parents. They all knew that when their parents talked, they meant business, and there was no sugar coating or room for talking back.
I LOVE CLAIR ON THIS~..... I STARTED ACTING THIS WAY... BUT MY DAD who is a veteran of desert storm when he got home, he set me straight... Whew! I remember this episode so well. Nothing has been as good as the Cosby show since, by design I'm sure. I miss it. Claire's acting was underrated.
Truly useful and excellent demonstration of parenting, and it came from a sitcom. I might be using it myself someday. Child psychologist will always have their place but Claire Huxtable had a certain wisdom that no advanced degree could bring anyone.
Thank you guys for the great responses! My mom was JUST LIKE THAT! we need more of that today. Jails overflowing because kids aren't taught that there are boundaries. " if you don't like life here, take yo check and hit it!!!
If you're surprised at the difference in how Claire addresses Denise and Saundra and she addresses Vanessa, Theo and Rudy you have to take in account that Saundra and Denise were older, Vanessa gave Claire the most grief and tried her the most, Theo was the only boy and Rudy didn't really do these levels of 'trying' her parents.
Rudy had seen her siblings not get away with things so knew she wouldn't either. Also she seemed to be the one who learnt from her mistakes like the time she took part in a drinking game where everyone became ill, knew she would be in trouble for drinking but still called her parents for help.
I love Denise’s “mhm” it’s rude, dismissive, and very realistic of snotty teens .Lisa Bonet really made Denise feel real while being the flakey bohemian cliche
This scene was just priceless. My parents would've said something similar. I wonder where Denise got all that money from though. Allowance or as gifts probably.
+Arthur Mccalla Cliff and Clair started trust funds for all of their kids. The Huxtables (being a doctor and lawyer) had the luxury to do such a thing.
+gerald geaf depends where you live. The Huxtables were an OB/GYN and a corporate lawyer in NYC, specifically Brooklyn Heights, a very affluent neighborhood. Even today, those two professions in a big city will make you a lot of dough.

rique stringer Melanin deficient white folks?? Who do you think wrote that show? Most of the writers, producers, directors and fans of that show were white Stop being so racist.
Cosby and Rashad had heavy influences on the script. If Cosby didn't approve of the script, it didn't get done. Also, the scripts had to pass the muster of a black psychiatrist, Dr. Alvin Pouissant, a close friend of Cosby.
I agree I love how Claire sets Denise stright. it's the Same old thing Kids allways think they know better then the Parents. not realizeing most Parents have been there done that before their child was born. so they have been in that situation before same cycle generation after Generation.

CLAIRE HUXTABLE is the business! The BEST MOM in television history.
Did you see the episode where Vanessa and her friends went to see The Retched? If I were Denise, I'd be VERY thankful not to be in my sister's shoes.
Roseanne was way cooler.

Claire Huxtable and her snapbacks are everything! Lol. Best mother on television by far.
I'm surprised Claire did that in such a calm tone. I mean wow. She didn't yell or fly off the handle. But those words still stung like bees.
inside herself she was probably like the towering inferno - but just holding back!
It really sinks deeper in when you're calm. I learned that in a job training/customer service course.

That lecture sounded like a warning, growling hiss communicated from a lioness to her wayward cub. Love it!! Go, Claire!
Lisa Bonet was such a talented teenager.. It all flows so naturally. You never catch her acting.
very true
In retrospect she probably wasn’t acting.
Fact
I love her acting. Her talent flows naturally because she is very relaxed and at ease being on camera.
I really like her energy. There’s something about her i can’t put my finger on, that i really really like nevertheless.
Clair was the best at checking her kids and at the same time supporting them.
Denise is at that age where kids think they know better than their parents do.
Alexander Edward Pytko She became a privileged little shit, and Clair had to knock her down a peg.
