  • This carol originated from France and was paraphrased from the French original by Hames Chadwick. It retells the story of the shepherds from the hills of Bethlehem who were stunned to witness a host of angels proclaiming the birth of the long-awaited Messiah - the descendant of their ancient King David, who would bring an end to suffering and restore people to God. What they may not have realized is that he would first have to take care of the sin-problem of the human heart, and later would return to rule over the Earth and all creation. But this won’t happen until his people, the Jews, acknowledge Jesus’ first coming and celebrate his coming to put all things right. Then they will say about Jesus, “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord”.

    Angels we have heard on high
    Sweetly singing o'er the plains
    And the mountains in reply
    Echoing their joyous strains
    Gloria in excelsis Deo!
    Shepherds, why this jubilee?
    Why your joyous strains prolong?
    What the gladsome tidings be?
    Which inspire your heavenly songs?
    Gloria in excelsis Deo!
    Come to Bethlehem and see
    Him whose birth the angels sing;
    Come, adore on bended knee,
    Christ the Lord, the newborn King.
    Gloria in excelsis Deo!
    See Him in a manger laid
    Whom the choirs of angels praise;
    Mary, Joseph, lend your aid,
    While our heart in love we raise.
    Gloria in excelsis Deo!
