If I knew of this engine before I'd never have had a love for a machinist life. I had an Air Hog pump plane. After a few times of pumping it up I got a wild hair in my ass and decide "MO Powah baby". And rigged it to fly with Co2. The plastic air cycle engine got so cold it blew up. I didn't have a lathe, press or anything aside of a drill and some files. Round and bastard files. So me and my papaw cut up an old car rim for the aluminum and he showed me how delicate your hands can be and we made a boxer style 2 cylinder air cycle from a car tire. He was an old cowboy as I'm a cowboy today, but I didn't know these engines existed until now. But I learned a lesson that helped me as a sniper in the army for 10 years, as a cowboy, dad and husband. Your hands make everything possible. And I last flew that airhog 2 years ago on the day of his passing at his grave. I built a stand for it and it sits with him now. That Co2 engine lasted 24 years. My sons 5 and were now building a 2 charge 4 cylinder Rc car. This is so cool cause having the evap loops should give us some more run time and I never thought of that. Thank you sir, it seems odd I bet, but you helped start a tradition I hope.
Joe I've followed you for many years, both in magazines and video. I am really impressed with your Pitts and its motor, which is actually quite large. It seems CO2 might be more practical than I ever realized, especially in this throttleable version - thanks!
Nice video. I miss seeing your new creations at the indoor rc show in Columbus OH every year. That was my favorite rc event. I'm actually in the process of building a few micro rc planes myself. I wish there was another event in ohio that was equal to the Columbus show. It was always a good time.
I have several of these Gasparin motors. The problem I saw was that if you run them fast the O ring seal gets pushed into the exhaust ports and since the edge is sharp on the inside of the cylinder when the rubber is pushed into the hole the sharp edge cuts a little crescent of rubber from the O ring. I like to take some dental floss and rub a length of it over a block of jewelers rouge. then feed it through the exhaust port and pull it back and forth across the bottom of the hole. This rounds off the edge of the hole. It takes the sharp edge off of the hole on the inside and you can run it faster with out cutting up the rubber ring. The rings last a lot longer.
most informative and interesting model video I've seen in a while! Thank you. My dad told me about his Campus CO2 motor, and this was the first time I've seen one run. Admittedly I have a Brown motor that I'd bought on Ebay, but never had the knowledge of how to set it up and use it.
Nice presentation. I had no idea they run that well. To avoid flickering put the cam on same frequency as mains. 50hz cam and 60hz mains gives 10hz flickering.
One might hope there are 3D printing enthusiasts who develop some modern versions of these without the precise metal tooling requirements. Whether in aluminum or carbon fibre, that can withstand the pressure & cold temperatures. They certainly have a place in modeling and besides, we wouldn't want to waste all this excess 'climate change'-causing CO2', right?
Thanks you did a lot to demystify them. I recall seeing them when I was a kid 50 yrs ago but they were too spendy back then. Not too loud either. I like them. My local group is rubber only however.
I've flown 1/2A RC since the '80s and I've never had a C02 motor. I always thought it was only good for brief free flights so this was really enlightening, thank you!
I am waiting on a Gasparin G-24 I just purchased on Ebay. I can not find a charger for it for the life of me so I guess I'll just stare at the engine when I get it.
Nice... I just sub to you channel.. Question: i just got a Hacker Bellanca super decathlon. Uses rubber band or CO2 motor or electromotor.. Can this plane be made to a RC plane? Mod num 2304
I just know you are going to be plauged with "where do you get these" - let me be the first. Thank you for this very interesting video. Brown used to produce motors many years ago.
You can find some nice CO2 motors on E-Bay from time to time. You have to ask if they still run? You can also purchase Gasparin Motors from oldenginemodel.com. They have a great selection of motors, and spar parts. www.old-engine-model.com/en/k266.gasparin-co2-motory/
Back around2004 or so I had purchased a Dumas Beech craft Staggerwing biplane and power it with an old Telco but the charger was messed up, so I attempted to find one but alas they were gone.
Back around 2000, I decided to build the Dumas Staggerwing Beech craft biplanr. I also decided I would use CO2 to power it. Unfortunately, by then co2 was just a memory, there adds for Gasparin co2 motors but by then they collectors items. I thought about using my Telco co2 motor, but the seals were bad, and neither charger would work. I built a model using plans from Model Airplane News, for a Telco, and it flew good caught some good air and wound up on the other side of a ten acre field. I could just see the prop turning over during the entire flight. I miss those days!
I just picked up an old “Baby Brown” MJ-140V twin on Ebay. It's pretty grimey and stiff - how do I go about cleaning/lubing it? I'm afraid to just start disassembling it.
@@JoeMalinchak I just picked some up and gave it a few drops and it is now nice and free - thanks! Now to hunt for a tank, and more importantly a way to fill it. The fill nipple is about 1/16 diameter, .067mm. Any recommendations on finding a fill setup? I've read about SodaStream adapters but have not been able to find anything.
@@svenyonson27 Check out this website, www.old-engine-model.com/en/ They sell Gasparin CO2 motors and accessories. They also have fill adapters. You should have a 2mm filler nozzle on your CO2 motor. Only the real small CO2 motors have a 1mm tip.
Very informative video. Thanks for the inputs. I intend to acquire a Gasparin motor soon and am getting as much inputs on the operation and maintenance of these motors. Iam now assessing what type of recharge canisters are available in our country that is compatible to the recharge nozzles if these motors. A video regarding this aspect would be useful.

See y’all when this got more than a million views
I've heard of the Gasparin motors but never seen one running - thanks.
Compressed air is somewhat si ilar and chalanging.
I think it's crazy to say that electric has died off. Still a cool motor ( pun intended) .

Crazy
Is that Pitts scratch or kit? It’s absolutely stunning! I have a soft spot for tiny scale Rc and Co2
The Pitts was built from an old Herr FF kit,

Do you know where and what the tool is that hold the co2. Thanks
I had never seen or heard of this before, great video!
Leider wurde die Funktion nicht erklärt.😥😥😥😥😥👎👎 Viele Grüsse aus Germany

Awesome, never knew this was a thing. The sound is great too
Wie werden diese Motoren geschnmiert. Kommt in den Tank etwas Öl?

I may just have to order from Old Engine Model overseas
So cool, i heard of those but never seen examples of them. Thank you for sharing, They are not cheap on eBay though
How long will it run?.

Yes, you can make the model R/C.
would a spark plug increase the power
Yes, but then it would not be CO2 powered.
Joe: Where can I purchase a charger?
This is the only site that I know of that you can still buy chargers, and Co2 motors.

c02 seems to charge ALOT faster than batteries do
great videos where can I buy a charger for co2 cartridges? I looked all over but cannot find one. any help would be greatly appreciated
