Sony claims that the ZV-1 ($799) is the Best Vlogging Camera out there. But at $779 we think the new iPhone 12 Mini reasonably priced to take on the Sony ZV-1 for the King of Vlogging Camera. The video I was loooking for! I was either going to upgrade to a iPhone 12 mini (used to the size of the 7) or get a dedicated vlogging cam the Sony VZ-1. Looks like the iPhone 12 mini is the way to go!

Great video this is IMO a realistic comparison what many debate using as a primary, another underrated aspect is how low key it is using a phone to film vs an actual camera

One issue is that iPhone doesn't come with SD card slot.. If you shoot 4k a lot iphone wouldn't make sense.
It depends on the platform you're creating for. If you're doing a high end production, this is the wrong equipment. If you're doing for fast pace content creation, like TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, you don't really need an SD Card slot.
@@JeremyToh most people buy the 64gb version... doesn't matter what they're doing, storage is an issue once the cameras start rolling!
Very useful. I might wait til the ZV-2 comes out, which I hear will have a wider angle lense and better menu.

Putting the adaptor on takes away from just being able to put it in your pocket. I wonder when ZV-2 will come out?

zv1 is miles better than a smartphone. specially depth of field. it just looks better in a dedicated camera
No low light comparison ?
They are both equally good. We just decided to summarise it into one sentence “Both take good videos and photos in various lighting situations” as opposed to making the viewers watch an entire segment. We found from our previous 3 camera comparison videos, there’s very little viewer interests in them, they seem to “zone” out by that segment, which we usually showed at near the end of our videos. Under AUTO mode, the iPhone 12 Mini is cleverer at automatically adjusting the exposure settings, iPhone produce great shots during twilight and at night. Quite unbelievable for a tiny camera lens. Under Auto mode, the Sony performed slightly better at night, the ZV1 is able to expose better, perhaps due to having the 1 inch sensor and the images is less grainy, but only slightly. If you manually adjust the settings on the Sony ZV1, by changing the ISO and Shutter speed, the Sony can achieve even better results. But you’ll have to do it manually. We shot in Auto and Manual Mode only for Sony, and also in HDR for photos and video for this comparison but decided to leave out this segment intentionally for the sake of keeping the video short and simple. Maybe if more people would like to see the actual comparison, we will gladly bring back the Night Mode comparison. I dont think iphone is near as good even on regular indoor light videi, so this is where the zv1 shines.

Yes it does. What kind of content do you plan on shooting? If it is short format videos for TikTok, UA-cam Shorts and Instagram Reels, the iPhone is definitely the way to go. If you want to do more Quality videos for B-rolls and presentation, but can't be bothered carrying a large camera, the ZV-1 is the way to go. If vlogging i still lean towards the iPhone, much easier and less shaky footage.

one question though, on your sample video where you did audio tests. in iphone's footage: sky seems very blue. however in zv1's video its mostly blownout. any specific reason? and was is really that blue that day?
Welcome! We are happy to have your support. That clip was shot in AUTO mode, unfortunately the Sony ZV-1 doesn’t do dynamic range as well as the iPhone in auto mode. But it doesn’t mean the ZV-1 can’t get the same shot. If you make a few adjustments like shooting in HLG/PP10 or use an ND filter, that brightness clipping goes away. It was a nice beautiful sunny day with clear skies.
@@JeremyToh understandable. That's is my only concern while choosing a camera vs iphone debate. Get is straight out well balanced. Or shoot in log and correct in post.

For candid shots, the iPhone will outperform the ZV-1. But if you chase versatility, a more artistic look, and still value having a compact size camera; the ZV1 is a good camera to have. Otherwise there is always Mirrorless full frame option.

you know that they both have face detect autofocus right? I know the zv1 has eye detect as well but that doesn't mean that they aren't using the face detect that they've been using since about 2012 as well.
in many ways the iphone's autofocus is technically worse, but that comes with the caveat that it doesn't need to be as technically impressive because the lens is set up in such a way that pretty much everything is in focus all the time (hence the lack of blurry backgrounds) so the point about the iphone having "better" autofocus is a little bit misleading.
essentially they'll both keep you in focus so it's a bit of a non issue though.
How are you going to say the iphone has better auto focus? Hmm....
