      Thanks for taking us along on your Florida working vacation. It was great fun to see your dad there with you. I was surprised at the end that you and your dad tasted the Old Bay seasoned lobster first. To me, once I’ve tasted the seasoned one, the I
      unseasoned would pale in comparison seeming to then need seasoning. I’d not have a good sense of the bare lobster flavor to compare. Anyways - it looks like y’all had bunches of fun on what we’d call a ‘busman’s holiday’. Cheers!

    This is what my grandfather did, he was a spiny lobster fisherman and his boat was docked on Stock Island. Every summer, from age 13-17, I was baiting, scrubbing, and pulling traps. Wooden traps (like in your video), not wire, and no one would believe how crusty they can get after a season. It's crazy.
    Edit: I would give almost anything to work one more season with my abuelo; pulling traps, drinking Ironbeer, and eating Cuban Mix sandwiches, all while cutting up and having a good time. Man, I loved it so much.

    • @ricktaylor14001
      @ricktaylor14001 11 місяців тому +3

      Okay… you have to help out us non-fishing, non-seafood loving people here. What? and where from is PNW? Snow crab? “Unmentionable?” I’m guessing rock crab is what we just saw, yes? But no idea of Krusty Krab (although I’ve definitely dated some!)… and then the final “dungie”… is that another one or is that back to the first PNW one?
      Just a side note…. So I’m from New Brunswick, Canada (just north of Maine), and we’ve got some awesome lobster there that goes worldwide (unfairly to Maine in some ways that none of us are happy about… well maybe some lobster fishers in Atlantic Canada are, but overall we’d like Canada to adopt some Maine rules and make us all working for the same sustainability goal, but that’s another story). I was brought up where lobster was a “forced” meal for us kids… I am okay with it now, but still NOT a huge fan and that’s why I’m limited in my crab knowledge. I tried Alaskan king, wasn’t fond of it and have avoided crab altogether. Now in my 50’s… I’ve opened up and want to try some alternative crab (& Caribbean lobster). This is why I’m asking about the crab names you’ve used… never heard of most of them. I’d say I know about Chesapeake crab (blue I think?), of course Alaskan king and I think Deadliest Catch showed another crab they went after when king was out of season… big can’t remember the name.
      Long comment. But you seemed like the right one to ask after all those you listed! 🤣😜
      Thanks in advance! 👍🏼☮️

    My dad and I ran 800 lobster , 300 crab traps for years and then handlined in the off season and dove for tropical fish and salvage never a dull moment for a fisherman in the Keys. There was money to make and even more to spend we moved away in the late 70s .
    There’s more way to cook Florida lobster than Buba Gump shrimp all of them good. Back then you could spot a old crabber because he was missing a finger or two we used sardines cans punched with a ice pick the crabs would crush them down like a steam roller had ran over them. Great video thanks for bringing back memories.

    Hey Jacob,
    I love your vids and I respect you as a responsible fisherman. I would just like to mention how important Menhaden are to the survival of healthy marine ecosystems up and down the east coast. You call them pogies, where I live and fish we call them bunker. Bunker are an important source of food for striped bass, bluefish, dolphins, whales, eagles, osprey, sharks, otters, seals and many more marine species. They are very oily fish which is important to the predatory creatures that depend on them for food. I hope you Main lobster guys appreciate the importance of these fish when harvesting them. Where I live there are grass roots movements to protect the Menhaden population as they seem to be in decline. As I said, I respect you as a responsible lobsterman and I'm impressed by your work ethic. I thank you for following the quotas ( but I never trust quotas that are set by the government, usually based on spotty and incomplete data). Anyway, time will tell where all this goes. I wish you all the best!

    I can't imagine having to tell everyone, pig's feet did him in!
    Also was I worried about your eyes, for no reason, around those lobsters? They look like they could give you 0/0 vision?

    I enjoyed this video very much as I lived in the Florida Keys for 10 years. I had a 25 1/2 foot sportfisherman boat that I used for scuba diving, fishing, cruising, and full moon watch parties. It was the most fun I have ever had in my life. My friends and I dived for lobsters, and I occasionally went out with a friend to help him pull his traps. I've had main lobster, and it is delicious, but I really like Florida lobster.
    I hope to get back to the Florida Keys to live, and this episode made me really homesick. But I enjoyed it thoroughly.
