Well John, maybe it’s fine I chamber a barrel for my 7mm Wheeler PRC.
Alex developed it years ago and I have been sitting on it for a while. The Wheeler version takes the 6.5 PRC and simply necks it up to 7mm, but still close. You are doing it right now by not getting rid of your 284. This is just for fun until proven otherwise. 😉
So are these legit now 😜😂🤣😬
am doing load developement for a 7 6,5PRC asweel rightnow
Used Quickload and calculated everything using 6.5PRC and changed the parameters as needed. Was absolutely correct!
What velocity are you getting?
Looking forward to your results. Been looking at 6.5prc and this new 7.... For a future build. Love the 7mm. Can't wait for the test vids...
I really like 7rsaum. I have been using it now for 7years and know the cartridge very well and always use the same 183gr HPBT with H4831sc. The efficency along with excellent barrel life I get every barrel makes the perfect 284cal match cartridgeIMO. Also makes a hell of a hunting cartridgeas I have built a few LR hunting rifles for peoplewho hunt LR Whitetail deer and they absolutely love it. Lapua doesn't make brass for it but that fine. I use ADG and Norma has done well. Necking down Norma 300rsaum brass has also worked extremely well for me. I use one for unlimited class 1000yd Benchrest and one for F Class
McWhorter custom rifles makes a 7mm rifle based off the 6.5prc brass, 7sprc. Must be amazingly accurate, forgiving and gets decent velocity!
Very informative. Thanks John. Appreciate you
Glad it was helpful!
I am sure this will be the one! Good luck. Excited to follow along!
Never watched a barrel to receiver install,,thanks for teaching this old dog a new trick!
Glad I could help
I'm sure you know this and probably did it off camera, but always lower your torque wrench back to zero for storage. Compression on the spring over time will cause it to lose calibration.
Really looking forward to this series too.
411 Tactical Testing. MV 3,160 FPS 162 grn ELD M. We also have developed the sizing dies and seating dies. We used N160 powder. Have a great day!
Nice excited to see how it works out happy independence day
Thank you and you too!
@ 15:50 ---> IIRC, it's supposed to be between N550 & N560 on the Hodgdon burn-rate chart. Around H4831(& SC), Superformance, IMR 4955, and N160 ironically. 😉
I’ve been thinking about taking 6.5 PRC to 7mm. While this is a “magnum” but it isn’t a magnum like we traditionally think of. It’s just something that has more meat in the case head to keep primer pockets tight.
Exactly. I'm working on the next video already but I have to say it's looking and feeling great.
@@FClassJohn that’s awesome. Glad it seems to be working! I’ve been shooting 6.5 PRC for about two or three years and it’s done great for killing. Going 7mm seems perfect for targets.
In South Africa that big box of 6.5 Prc Lapua brass would make you very popular and extremely rich
Pretty sweet, can't wait to see the shooting results.................... thanks
Man I hope we get to see some of this on you tube. If the velocity is there this would be a killer hunting round.
That’s what I’m thinking! I’d imagine 190 class bullets would require long action just like the 7saum.
Great video. Thanks. J.
I was just talking to Alex Wheeler about his chambering like this.
Looking forward to your next videos.
Really interested in your results. I love my 284 win!
The initial groups at 100 yards are 5/15 inch. the official name is "7 mm ML 411 Authority". So there you have it. We can build rifles for you. F-Class or PRC.
Sure like that 419 press. Thanks for sharing John.
Thanks for watching!
Waiting for the next one, thanks John !!!!
john have a 6.5 prc -h1000 but on a 270 wsm the load was off from the book r17 53 G 3200 v it was screwy the same load on 6.8 western was 2900 i do have a bad bicep my shooting on hold doc visit for it, it bad by gregg today i got to leave now ok after Doctor visit in bicep there 3 parts attached the one main at elbow & one big one & smaller one around the shoulder, the smaller one on the shoulder area is the one i tore it a pt fix he said in's a shoulder weakness too i got so many thing wrong the neck shoulder & my age too! your not kid act your age! i got a email look at hospital e log & view files & xrays my shoulder & elbow the big rifle stuff with out threads for or a muzzle break this will not get better a lead sled wight & hold it the weight & strewth of me is less then before injury!
So what is the difference between that cartridge and 7 Saum? I appreciate your videos and look forward to more!
I can hear Erik now, haha.
😂
Lapua sorta makes brass for it....
@@tbrown91241 yes exactly. It’s no different than when we used to neck up Lapua 6.5×284 to make our 284 Winchester brass.
"Is Todd Hendricks using one?"- Erik Cortina
Wonder how similar this chambering is to McWhorter custom rifles 7SPRC that they came up with buy niecking up 6.5prc.thanks for the video man very interesting for sure.keep up the good work and God bless
Thank you. I'm not familiar with McWhorter but guys have been necking up the 6.5prc for quite a while now and I've seen a number of different minor variations over the years. I didn't want to do anything with the cartridge until Lapua made brass so that's why I've waited to try one.
@@FClassJohn I've heard that people have been playing with the caliber for a while.ive been looking at purchasing one my self but have been holding off.thanks again for the video
That may be however we developed the 7mm in a PRC case.
From what I have seen from a friend to 7prc is pretty much a 284 shehane same case capacity and speeds
I sure hope you post the results soon!
I'm a hobbyist gunsmith so not an expert, but watching you install that barrel had me asking one big question??? The way the stock was bouncing around can't be good on that barrel. Everytime it flexes it torques that barrel which tells me you are greatly increasing the possibility of warping the barrel. I was taught to lock the barrel in a vice and torque the action. You had the barrel held about halfway up the barrel plus you had the weight of the stock pulling down and bouncing around.
I appreciate the concern and where it’s coming from. Maybe with thinner barrels and smaller actions but their ain’t nothing I’m doing that’s going to hurt a Defiance action and an 10lb, 1.25” straight barrel. Most guys I hang around do it the same and we’re talking the top shooters on F Class.
Well hopefully it works well for you. But I must say you’ve had several really good matches recently including Texas, now you choose to begin new load development because regardless of how little change this will be, it is a change. Hope it works but how many times have you gone down this road? Whats that expression about insanity? Good luck you deserve success because you’ve worked for it. Remember it’s the work and the gear not just one or the other with some luck sprinkled on top of course. Have fun get some X/V’s.
I totally understand but here's the difference compared to how I've done it in the past, and I'll touch on this in the next video if I remember but I'm not throwing out the baby with the bathwater this time. I still have my tread and true .284. It's still a hammer and I still can fall back on it easily for matches. There's nothing saying I have to take the PRC to a match if I don't trust. It's just testing and having fun without sacrificing much.
Theres nothing wrong with trying new things. Whats important is not to abandon what your using if its working well for you.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and comments on how it compares to your usual F-Class 284 setup. Will you shoot this one at the same ranges (and distances)? I think the 7PRC may have potential (on paper so far).
Me too but keep in mind that even though I said ' 7PRC' it's really not and I will clarify that in my next video. It's 6.5PRC necked up which is dramatically different than the brand new Saami 7PRC that was just released a couple weeks ago. It's going to cause some confusion for sure right now.
@@FClassJohn copy that, thanks. Looking forward to this series.
Is this a short or long action? I would presume it to be short since it’s using the 6.5prc brass?
Hi John, I am interested in the temp guage strip you use. I couldn't find the link for it in the description. If you can spare a second please send through the link. Appreciate you time mate, cheers.
Here ya go amzn.to/3RuQuWz
What reloading dies are you using for the 7-6.5prc John?
Very interesting
Only issue is it’s not a 7mm PRC even though that is what the 7mm PRC should have been. The 7mm PRC is 3.34 COAL. Long action cartridge.
I thought erik says not to experiment, just use what the top shooters are using and go.
Pretty cool... All I do is shoot long range for fun and hunt but I also love to tinker with new cartridges... especially when those cartridges are in the 6mm, 6.5mm, 6.8mm, or 7mm's. I don't think this cartridge has anything to offer me because I already have rifles chambered in 7SAUM, 7WSM, and 280AI and my understanding is this is going to fall in the middle of those but I've also heard it will give a little better velocities so I can't wait to see some shooting footage and see how it does. You might have mentioned it and I just missed it but what length is that barrel??
It's a 31" barrel and yeah, seems like you have that range covered which is cool, there's some good cartridges there for sure. For me it's about being able to use Lapua Brass and since none of those other popular magnums are made by Lapua I've passed on them.
@@FClassJohn Thanks I was just curious... I think the 7PRC will be a cartridge that hangs around for a while... It's interesting to see how trends grow because outside of the 7mm Rem Mag the 7mm's just wasn't that popular even though there's been several that's been consistently produced they wasn't exactly mainstream outside of a couple circles but it seems like they've been blowing up the last couple few years... the same thing goes for the 6.8mm's. I guess the 6.5 craze is dying down and people are looking for something new to tinker with.
Someone tested this idea and was projecting velocities about 2800 with one of the slower N powders. Can't wait to see if you can get it to match or beat the 284. Likely similar in performance. Fun project though. Can't wait for the next step. John, are you going to tell us where you got this chambered?
I'm already running it well over 2900fps with no pressure issues or any kind and it's already hammering the target. Move videos coming soon.
Hello John. Would you have the reamer print to the 284 win chamber your were talking ?
As long as it's FedEx, not UPS !
What are the proper steps/equipment to neck up lapua brass?
In most cases you just want to use some kind of a lube inside the necks and a good expander mandrel or gauge pin.
John, What was your OAL w/180 hyb to the Lands? Curious to what the case vol was as well after FF.
So it’s not really a 7 PRC since the new PRC doesn’t use 6.5 brass. It has its own longer case.
What size bushing do you use for full length sizing die?
COOL !!......COPY THAT - 10-4 !!! on the barrel cleaning before firing from new - ABSOLUTELY !! ........so - do you not turn your torque wrench back to zero ??....- Good Luck & Thanks fer sharing
Thank you and no, I’m super lazy about turning it back to zero. I know I probably should but I honestly don’t most of the time.
Did you neck all the up to .284 with one mandrel? Or did you take it in steps? Annealing after? Or just right to fire forming?
7prc vs .284 Shehane?
I have had the .284 Shehane and it was a good shooter.
Whats the size of the neck on the loaded round?
So 3-4 more gr powder for 120 more fps? Is bbl life expected to remain 1800?
Yes that's about right and if all goes right with this chamber design, the barrel life should definitely be at or above that of my 284s.
I'd really like one of these, 7 saum brass is so hard to find. Any chance this reamer print will hit the public?
Not this particular print but I'm sure at some point in the near future you'll see more of them. At their core, it's just a Saami 6.5prc print but necked up to 7mm. I've seen more than one that are nothing more than that.
Eric is not gonna be pleased!!! ;).
🤣
Please direct me to the temperature strips that you use? Thanks. Warren
Here ya go amzn.to/3yFHO6n and amzn.to/3nDew1S
Very interested in this series of videos and your results! What is N555 next to on the burn rate chart? Thank you.
I don't know the exact burn rates on it. Best as I can tell it loads about the same as 4831sc. It's a little slower than H4350 and Rl16 but appears faster than something like H1000 or RL23.
By the way, is this Alex Wheeler’s chamber?
No it's not.
@@FClassJohn ah I knew he had been chambering a variation. Man, you’re a lucky guy to get all that brass! I’ve been looking for Lapua PRC like crazy and only find it with limit one box.
I shoot a Remington 280AI, just saying
This is going to be an interesting series F-Class John 😀👍. I’ll take a wild guess and say that the velocity will be around 3000 fps .
Glad you like it and I'm hearing it likes to shoot around 2930-50 so we will see.
411tactical, Inc. is filling patent applications since they designed and developed the cartridge.
I had never heard of them until a day or so ago where you posted on my videos that they're selling a version of 7mm-6.5prc but there's lots of versions of this out there already. I don't know if they're doing a hunting round closer to the 7prc that is SaMMi spec or a target version or something in between. I suspect we'll see quite a few variations of anything from 6.5prc to 7prc and everything in between over the next few years.
@@FClassJohn ML is 411 tactical
Tell mr Wheeler that! Though it’s refreshing he’s not marking his territory for profit
Interesting you're left handed but shoot a right handed action...If I was to hazard a guess, is this Jay Christopherson's chambering that you are testing?
I can shoot ambidextrous but prefer right side even though I'm left. I'm the same way with golf. No, it's not Jay' or Alex's chambering.
Thank you John. I could not help but notice you're bolt face and the curved end of the barrel. It looks a lot like the Bergara I have. Is there a term/name for that style?
It’s called a cone bolt and for single shot rifles it tends to be preferred over a standard Remington bolt face.
@@FClassJohn Thank you very much sir :)
I think that it's called a coned bolt.
Also is this a prefit barrel? I noticed you didn't need any go no go gauges? Thank you
No, I don't use prefits for what I do. These are all custom chambered by one of a couple gunsmiths that I use to my actions specifically.
Short action OK with single load?
Yeah most people do that in F Class. .284 and most of the magnums are all shot on a short action and single loaded and if you need to pull a round you have to pull the bolt.
@@FClassJohn Thanks John, that makes a rifle decision much easier...
I thought 7mm PRC was going to be a long action?
7mm PRC (Hornady/SAAMI Spec) is going to be a long action. This is something different.
What did you put on your torque wrench at 9:45 and where can I get one?
It's called an action wrench and they're action footprint specific. Here's a link to PMA www.pmatool.com/action-wrenches/ and they carry them for most common actions.
John. What twist barrel are you using.
1:9
Is that a primer seater with the red handle? If so, who makes it?
That's the Lee ACP for priming.
What does "3DP" stand for?
What’s the twist rate? 8.7?
Need a link for the temp strips!
Here ya go. amzn.to/3ypCJxJ and amzn.to/3bV0Mgo
7PRCW
Whats the diffrens in that and 7rsaum?
Very little besides the fact that lapua brass is not available for the Rsaum😥
11:24 Phrasing please.
7mm in a PRC case is finished. 411Tactical, Inc. has finished it. 162 grn ELD M 3,160 fps. 68 percent less recoil than 300 winmag. 100 yard The chamber and barrels have already been made and tested. Patents are being filled in next week.
Not the same as the 7-6.5prc that the F class guys are trying
What powder would yield that kind of velocity out of a case that is pushing it to get 2900fps out of a 147 gn
Isn't this basically thw same thing as a 284 winchester? Velocity wise I mean.
No not at all. This cartridge is already easily shooting at 2940fps without any pressure signs or primer pocket issues.
@@FClassJohn oh ok, that's more than I was expecting, thats pretty sweet. Was vihtavuori 555 designed to produce higher velocities than a single base powder like H4350?
@@reloadingfun It just does it differently. I know guys shooting versions of a 7mm-6.5prc with n555, h4350, n165, h1000, RL23, 4831sc, RL16 and a few others.
@@FClassJohn Was vihtavuori 555 designed to produce higher velocities than a single base powder like H4350? Are the people you know getting 2940 or higher with H4350?
@@reloadingfun I honestly don't know which powders and what velocities people are getting with it. Sorry.
What’s a blow off round
Rounds that aren't for anything other than fouling up a barrel that you cleaned or to heat a barrel up a bit.
What action are you running
Defiance Deviant
@@FClassJohn thanks
Do you know anything about bat actions
@@tonydevich7937 I have plenty of friends who run them and they really like them. I don't think they're making the 3-Lug anymore but the Neuvo is getting great reviews from those using them and their other actions are well liked too. Different design in that you don't need tools to take the bolt apart compared to other actions that require a removal tool.
@@FClassJohn thanks I'll look into those too, the one you have is surprisingly not out of hand for cost
Ha Ha…he said fingering 😆
Why not just do 7mm PRC?
Because actual 7mmPRC is designed as a hunting round, it's a different case design and not a good design for target shooting. I can't remember the exact difference but it's something like 10gr of water weight more over necking up a 6.5prc. That's why guys starting necking them up years ago to start testing it out because it's more on par to the 7saum and 7ShermanShort.
5/16
Really , how many versions of the 7 mm PRC do we need ?….. If you want it to survive sell it as a hunting cartridge or it will just be another proprietary target cartridge like all the dozens of target cartridges that have come and gone !……..
It's just a personal target cartridge so I don't care and I don't market or sell anything. But please keep in mind that 7PRC is TOTALLY different than all the 6.5prc/7mm cartridges that are being used for long range target use. Actual 7prc is a bigger case, more powder and perfect for hunting but horrible for targets. All the version of necked up 6.5prc to 7mm were around WAY BEFORE Hornady applied for 7PRC Saami specs.
@@FClassJohn Thanks for your reply , some of the target guys are saying the 7 PRC is the greatest thing since sliced bread for target shooting ! All this 7 mm this and 7 mm that is making me dizzy ! I remember 25 or 30 or so years ago the 1000 yard shooters some were shooting the 6.5 x 300 WBY with the 140 and 142 Sierra match at 3400 fps and it was said nothing could ever e better ! How times have changed ! I wonder what Frankenstein cartridge they will be using 25 or so years from now ? Has anyone used a 300 ultra rast twist with the 240 gr Sierra ? Just saying !…..
Not at all a 7mm PRC, totally different brass than 6.5 PRC
Dude, it’s difficult enough to find 6.5PRC components. Leave us alone please.
The economic dispersion of your tools is hilarious.
I don’t disagree. I don’t just go out there to buy the most expensive tool, I just try to find the tool that fits my needs the best and sometimes that’s the cheapest and sometimes that’s the most expensive.
Hahahahah. 7…P…R…C
uhhhh this did not age well
OH boy fixing something that is not broken. Dumb!
